They were actually calling the fight correctly from the very start. Normally it takes a couple rounds before they stop front running. Even when an HBO favorite is losing early rounds they will try and put a positive spin on it.
Normally Lederman will score for the guy moving forward regardless of wether or not he is landing, and justify it with the "effective aggressiveness" speech.
Granted Nonito didn't give them a whole lot to work with but still I was surprised. You guys think someone sat Lampley down and told the nut hugging had to stop.
Or was Rigo so dominant that there was no way they could call it any other way ?
You have to be kidding. Lamps was his usual biased self. It goes like this: When the non white fighter (Manny, Pac, Oscar, Donaire) does well, Lamps' voice goes up a couple of notches. But when the black fighter starts doing well, Lamps goes completely silent.
Rigo had his best round in the 12th and Lamps didn't say a word.
You're saying Lampley is racist?? LOL dude, the guy has more black friends than Holyfield has ex wives.

Hmmmm... You have a point there.
Even HBO have to seem legitimate sometimes. They'll have a good commentary for a reasonable fight like this, then they'll be back to their usual selves when it really matters for them, in a huge fight.

and the thing with lederman...as I understand it, donaire threw and landed less than Rigondeaux. If he'd moved forward and thrown more and landed more, I'm sure lederman would've given him credit for it as he always does for the effective aggressor.
I don't think so. When someone is winning rounds that clearly, there's no denying it.
I've always felt you guy thought too much of the commentary, anyhow. They get a lot wrong, a lot right, they miss some, they call some...as long as they get the clear winner. It' not going to be perfect, but I would agree, a bit more consistency would be nice. This may, partly, stem from our own bias as well. Take Al Bernstien from Showtime, when he called Mares out on his low blows and so many people accused him of being biased, I didn't think he did anything wrong. Part of our frustration is based on our own preference on whom to root for that upsets us when certain things aren't called, or are.
For what it's worth, I thought they did a wonderful job this past weekend.
You think this was a freak incident ? Or someone told them they need to start calling things right ?
Since it has only happened so few times, I'll chalk it up as a freak occurrence. If it continues though, we'll know someone took notice of the problem and corrected it.
I couldn't believe how accurate the HBO team was for this fight. Even bigger than Lampley and Lederman was Roy Jones in my opinion. He is a known Donaire fan, and has said Nonito reminds him the most of himself among current fighters. I love Larry Merchant but I'm so glad his negativity was missing from the broadcast. Beautiful work by HBO Saturday night.
