Floyd Mayweather: Sergio Martinez fight not happening with weight difference
ATLANTA — Floyd Mayweather has never weighed in at more than 151 pounds for a fight.
Middleweight champion Sergio Martinez checked in at 159 pounds for his fight against Julio Cesar Chavez last September.
And therein lies one of the stumbling blocks for a potential megafight.
"Sergio Martinez is 160. Floyd Mayweather walks around at 147," Mayweather said Sunday during a media appearance at the Final Four. "Where was Sergio Martinez when I was dominating when I was 21? Nowhere to be found."
Mayweather is busy preparing for a May 4 fight against Robert Guererro in the Las Vegas, the first in a potential six-fight deal with Showtime over the next 30 months.
Martinez's next fight is April 27 against Martin Murray in Argentina.
About a year ago, Martinez said he'd be willing to drop to 150 pounds to face Mayweather and also take a 20-80 purse split. Whether the 38 year old could even drop down 150 pounds if necessary at this point is unknown.
Mayweather maintains he's going to remain active after the Guerrero fight, and that he's preparing for a toe-to-toe battle like his victory over Miguel Cotto last May.
"I've been pushing myself in training camp," Mayweather said. "My body has never looked the same as it's going to look for this fight. This is the longest I've trained for any fight.
"I'm going to dish it out in this one. I think me and Cotto gave (fans) an action-packed fight. I'm going to be ready, so hopefully he's ready."

Why are posters dwelling on Margarito still? He was never impressive as a boxer. His first fight against a HOF welterweight he got brutally hammered out.
You mean Sugar??? you made me laugh. I paid for the fight after,,, I should have saved that money to pay the IRS.
2013 is the new 2006 ..... Floyd wants no part of a Martinez just like he wanted no part of Margarito then.
Yepp,,, I remember that. He rather fight baldo for IBO and IBA. Zab dropped him thou that year. :boxing:
It smells like 2006 in here. No thanks.
2006 was a great year for floyd. he dispatched of the dangerous duo of judah and baldomir. division clean time to retire!
Why would he fight Margarito instead of baldomir? he'd be locked into a contract with TR and no chance of an Oscar fight because Arum was being a cheap cvnt.
Arum not wanting to work an Oscar fight was the sticking point. If you cant see that were going to have to agree to disagree here friend, you seem like a level headed poster though so i respect your opinion to the top
floyd demanded a 20 million guarantee to fight hoya. arum was like ok buddy that's not happening, and he was right as floyd only got a 10 million guarantee when he actually fought hoya. he knew his sh-it. floyd did not. if floyd demanded 20 mill he wouldn't have fought hoya when he did either. he priced himself out like a b-itch to run from margarito. then fought baldomir for less! holy lol!

Not really, Floyd could have exercised his option after the Margarito fight. Floyd had the option to break his contract and hurried up to face Baldomir .... lol! That is, Floyd had a contract where he could have broken it if he paid Arum $750K ....
Arum said you can fight Oscar for a certain amount but Floyd wanted more.
Only a fanatic will mention Margarito's name when Floyd has an upcoming fight, lmao! I thought Shane put that bird to rest when he knocked Margarito the **** out. No plaster, no wins.
There are no answers explaining Mayweather, Mayweather is unexplainable. I just enjoy delivering the facts on Mayweathers fairy-tale legacy, he's living in his head. Comparing himself to MLK and Ali!!!! After a while you just have to throw your hands in the air.
Just posting tid-bits on Mayweathers career is all.Your piss poor opinions of Floyd's career aren't facts. Fanatics like you are incapable of judging boxers careers. Yu'd rather try to joke and make friends with other haters. Sad, lmfao!
Yes I agree it's a lame way for floyd fans to justify that kind of crap through p4p rankings. ie it wouldnt have been ok for floyd to bring up donaire because he was top 5 or whatever.
But youre making the issue of margarito FAR more difficult than it has to be. Floyd wanted 2 things short term.
One, the margarito fight
then 2, the Oscar fight (in order to extend the contract)
Arum declined the Oscar fight straight away so Floyd left. Why wouldn't he have? Oscar was the bigger, the more lucrative, the BETTER fight to be made.
Fight Margarito instead of Baldomir then let the cards play out after that .... Again, Floyd did NOT want to fight Margarito even though the fight was there for him.
Now we are in the same boat ... no obstacles except for Floyd .... he admitted that he wants no part of Martinez at 154 .... so that is OK when Floyd's last fight was at 154 and he got the title? Yet, I see you want the Canelo fight at 154???? See the issue here?
1) I'm hardly a floyd fan and ive never justified the marquez fight using the P4P argument. floyd is just the better fighter regardless of weight. and khan being rated at #2 is a joke, no disputing that either
2) you say floyd trying to secure fights with Marg, oscar, cotto and hatton like it's a bad thing :lol1: But this is exactly what fans wanted
yet arum was too greedy and wouldn't make these fights for floyd, he was trying to protect his Latino money makers cotto and margarito and was too bitter about DLH to work with him in the HIGHEST GROSSING FIGHT EVER
So you agree that Floyd and his fans trying to legitimize those fights in that manner is wrong .... cool
The thing is that Floyd didn't want Margarito. If he did, it was there for the taking and he would have gotten paid more than fighting Baldomir. Floyd wanted Cotto in 2005 when Cotto was NOT ready yet. Arum stated that if there is someone that can dethrone Floyd, it would be Cotto BUT in 2005 it didn't make sense for several reasons ..... BUT Floyd wanted a green Cotto. Floyd knew all that since we knew all that .... so all that talk was cheap. Again, Floyd knew that Cotto was NOT available back then so the talk about Margarito was just that ... talk!!!
Arum was OK with Margarito but Floyd wanted "green" Cotto. See the issue?
Now fast forward to 2013 and Floyd is telling us that Canelo is crazy in saying that Canelo will only fight on the undercard if the winner of Canelo/Trout would be meaningful enough to take on Floyd when he beats Guerrero. All Floyd fans agree here with Floyd that Canelo should first think about Trout and then negotiate with Floyd for a fight later on ..... No problem but why didn't Floyd do the same back then and just fight Margarito instead of just talk?
i wanted floyd to sign to fight canelo too. im pretty bummed that there is a clause for a rematch in trout/canelo
U seem to keep it real bro. Green k sent

Canelo tried to secure a fight with Floyd the same way but he for shat on for it. It's a fight us fans want to see. So which is it?
1. margarito was never ranked by any legit source
2. arum himself admitted floyd agreed to fighting marg but arum turned the contract down in 2005 so thats why floyd left
1)
You Floyd fans are always bringing up rankings of one type or another to try to legitimize Floyd's fights BUT we all know that rankings does NOT always tell you everything.
So came about the example of Khan being ranked #2 and yes even Margarito was ranked higher than he should have been to make the fight look more legit. Again, it was discussed here at BS back then and that he shouldn't be above some more deserving fighters.
see Khan

see Margarito

Personally, I don't care if Margarito was or wasn't ranked. The point AGAIN was that you Floyd fans have brought this up to use as an excuse to legitimize fights for Floyd.
Example:
- .... but Khan is ranked #2
- .... but Marquez was #2 P4P
BUT the above doesn't mean that they were legit.
2)
Yes, Floyd said he would fight Margarito if he would have been guaranteed to fight Cotto too .... but that is a joke. Fight Margarito then let the chips land where they may but Floyd wasn't really interested in Margarito. He said so in interviews later on. Arum said eventually Floyd vs Cotto was going to happen. Floyd knew that since we knew that!
Even then, when saying that Floyd said this or that, ....... talk is cheap! Actions speak louder than ......
EXAMPLE:
- "Manny YOUR NEXT!"
- later : "I never said that Manny is next"
no i dont think so. Ward still hasnt gotten credit for demolishimg dawson cause of weight loss.
Yeah floyd wont get much credit for beating martinez at 154. Martinez isnt ranked at 154 at all and hasnt fought there in 4 years.
Floyd could fight at 160 for the lineal title. I think style wise he can beat martinez. But as it stands martinez is weighing 14-18 pounds more than mayweather on fight nights. If floyd beats him then what is he supposed to do, fight chavez who weighs 180 while he weighs 155 even after putting on some muscle.
Nope, you didn't. Just tell us who you think the WBC should have put as Floyd's mandatory. Simple question. Just answer it, son.
Right, sunshine...really slow this time, OK? I....dont...give...a...fuck....about...the...WBC...or...what...it...dictates...as...'mandatory'...and...neither...does...Floyd. It...doesnt...mean...anything.
Was that simple enough, idiot?....or shall we get someone to draw it for you?
mayweather agreed to fight margarito but arum turned down the contract. he wasnt ready to cash margarito out yet :thumbsdow
Margarito was ranked?  Source?
Margarito was ranked and it was discussed how he could have been ranked above some other more deserving opponents.
Floyd ducked Margarito. Everyone knows it. There was an interview of Floyd saying that he didn't want to fight and that was way way after when he could have pretended that he did want.
