Not in a fight but skillwise . Both are come forward pressure fighters with great power, heart, will and weight problems (fight night weight) plus a lot more similarities. Who do you reckon has more skill out of the two?
I say Vargas since he used his jab more and better defensively. On top of that he only lost to greats such as Tito Trinidad.
Vargas is the better fighter because he can also box from the outside effectively. Watch his fight against Ike Quartey and you see he can outbox a fighter with an excellent jab.
Vargas wasn't a brawler with power, he was a boxer-puncher with good overall skills.
A prime Vargas would be the undisputed light middle weight champion right this moment and will go the distance with light middle weight HOF's like Hearns, Benitez, Winky Wright and so on.
Rios? well he is struggling against the Alvarados of this world, there's nothing to debate here.

First tine I ever heard of Fernando having weight problems....
vargas was NOT a come forward, pressure fighter. he was a skilled boxer puncher. campas, quartey, winky and trinidad. watch those fights. vargas is by far superior to rios in skills.
Yeah i can't remember Vargas ever being a come forward fighter like Rios. Vargas by far the better boxer. He could fight going backwards and had much better defense than Rios.

vargas was 10 X the fighter rios was. he had damn offensive good skills. he had a hard jab and an intelligent, and very hard, left hook. his problem was that he ran into hall of famers with huge power early in his career and he got washed up.
I remember seeing Garcia say Vargas was the best boxer to ever train at his gym. I didn't really follow Vargas, but I think he would've done better with more cherry pick XP prior to Tito. He would've probably outboxed Rios more than Alvarado did.
My bad. Rios isn't in Vargas's league and is one-dimensional. The only thing they have in common is that after the fights with Tito and Hoya, Vargas lost interest in fighting at the highest level and struggled with weight as evidence in his fights with Mosley. Prime Vargas would have beaten Mosley in my opinion. Rios is undisciplined and gains too much weight in between fights. That is catching up with him right now. A fighters ability to take a punch is affected when they lose a lot of weight to make weight ala Bradley in his last fight. Add me to your friends if you'd like. Again, I apologize for jumping the gun in my previous statement.
It's alright. It may be a stupid question but that's how young guys like me learn about the sport by asking questions and you guys teaching me.
my bad........

Vargas was a powerful Boxer-Puncher, and was far superior to Rios, who fights like he's just there because he likes punching people and not because it's a professional sport.
Wow. A one handed vargas has way more skill then
Rios lol. Rios depends on the opponent wearing out physically and mentally or one before the other. He is margarito jr. I dont even know what else to say,any decent fighter with heart and a brain can beat him
I guess. Hope there is logic there
Thanks for the input

How old are you? This is yet another STUPID thread. Vargas spent his entire career at 154. Rios is too little and the fact that you would put him in the ring with Vargas who fought two of the best of his time in Tito and Hoya, is STUPID. Who do you think Rios is? How much do you know about boxing to even post such a thread?
If you would have read my opening post properly you would have read that I never stated them two fighting each other but who do you think is better skill wise. Please read properly. If you want to blast me blast my opening post cabron!
Btw I am 21
