Arum said the Chavez fight, which will be on HBO, will take place at the AT&T Center in San Antonio and be fought at a catchweight between middleweight and super middleweight, probably 164 pounds. Arum said the focus is on three potential opponents: Brian Vera, who won his fight Friday night and is from Austin, Texas, and two fighters from Great Britain, former title challengers Darren Barker and Matthew Macklin. However, Arum said that Macklin was offered the fight but didn't want to fight above 160 pounds.

First it was he wasn't fighting no one, then he went and fought Martinez like everyone wanted and the kid losses but finishes strong. I think it's fine he fights a cathweight fight since he lost his title and needs a comeback fight after a suspension. He should also see how he feels at a higher weight.
but but but there last name wasnt chavez and but but but they werent mexican so it okay....
It's a come back/stay busy fight after a suspension nothing wrong with a catch weight fight unless it's for a title. I mean others have fought for titles at catch weights and are treated like royalty.
Everyone just hates JR, haters will keep on hating and JR will keep on making money.
Why the f uck is he fighting 160 pounders at 164!? You'd think he was doing this to fight 168 pounders... But of course its JR we're talking about. I dont know how I'm a fan of this guy.
I don't see the point of Chavez fighting at 164. If he is fighting in the middleweight devision then make weight. If he can't make weight then move to 168 and try to earn a title fight at that weight. Chavez gains 20 pounds after every weigh in. If he weighs in at 164 he will come in the ring at 184 so who can blame a middleweight for wanting no part of that?
Saw this coming long ago:
Chavez will have a catch weight fight between 160 & 168 with a lower level 168 pound fighter, such as Kelly Pavlik or Abraham. He will look decent, nothing more.

Won't be a lower level 168 pounder though. It'll be a lower level 160 pounder.
Just move up to 168 already. Don't go the Pacquiao route and start taking advantage of lesser named opponents who would jump at the chance at a decent pay day at any weight, regardless of them not being healthy at the catchweight. They'll just say it's okay and they'll be good, but come fight night they perform their worst ever. Either 160 or 168.
With that said, I think Andre Ward would take the 164 catchweight if it was offered to him. Though I think 166 is better for both. Ward just has to go down 2lbs, which is would still affect him but not that much. And Chavez Jr would have room to be the fat ass he wants to be.
