LOS ANGELES -- Olympic boxers will fight without head guards in a pro-style scoring system starting this year after several significant rule changes by the sport's international governing body.
The International Boxing Association (AIBA) unveiled several rule amendments this week, but the two biggest changes will move the Olympic sport much closer to the professional version. The rejection of headgear and the introduction of 10-point scoring could make the sport once known as amateur boxing more appealing to young boxers seeking professional careers.
Male boxers at the world championships in October and the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016 won't wear the protective head guards adopted before the 1984 Los Angeles Games. Although the move might seem counterintuitive in preventing brain injuries, the chairman of AIBA's medical commission, Charles Butler, cites numerous medical studies that suggest fighting without head guards will decrease concussions.
"There's no evidence protective gear shows a reduction in incidence of concussion," Butler said. "In 1982, when the American Medical Association moved to ban boxing, everybody panicked and put headgear on the boxers, but nobody ever looked to see what the headgear did."

i've only ever boxed amateur with 10s and only ever seen 10s used, when are 12s used?
20 plus years ago I wore 12's for amateur , diamond belt and golden glove tournaments. Don't know if its the same everywhere. I looked up Olympic gloves though and 10's are worn in every weight class, so I was mistaken. Nice catch.
Negative, there has been quite a few fights stopped early due to cuts like in the first and second season. Just view the fights by time limit that ranges under 15 mins. I guarantee you that if not by knockout then those fights are stopped by cuts.
Oh I never saw any fo those fights. Most of the fights I've seen are the current season with Ukraine and GB
About time that the scoring system is being "modernized". I don't like the idea without headgear though. I still believe that it can prevent concussions and hearing damage. But now they're also going to get cut/swollen more often.
In the WSB there has not been any cuts that I have noticed plus the fights in it are good you don't see guys going up by 1 point and running around the ring.
If a guy wins a fight but gets cut it'll be quite harsh if he can't fight in his next fights due to cuts.

There will be cuts, but with 12oz gloves instead of eights and tens, and with only 3 rounds it won't be a major problem.

yea i dont see much cuts coming from the gloves. just head butts. but if your getting cuts in 3 rounds in the AMs. then your going to get major cuts in the pros.
THey should re-think the headgear, some guys are going to develop some nasty cuts before they turn pro.
