The networks are getting pimped by the promoters. SMH
Top Rank's stable is shrinking though, they'll be forced to work with Dibella/Shaw/Goosen/Main Events which is a good thing.
You guys are missing the big picture.
Golden Boy has 140-154 locked down but their presence in the other divisions is practically non-existent. Seth Mitchell and I think Deontay Wilder at heavyweight, Bernard Hopkins at light heavyweight (but he is on his way out, let's be real), Mares at super bantamweight.
They have a lot of named fighters at 140-154 but that means a lot of fighters to divide up Showtimes budget, and probably not much room for anything else.
You guys are forgetting all the great fighters in other weight classes that WILL be fighting on HBO. They are heavily invested in the middleweight division (Martinez, Chavez, Golovkin), super middleweight division (Andre Ward, Carl Froch, Lucian Bute, Mikkel Kessler), and light heavyweight division (Chad Dawson, Tavoris Cloud, Jean Pascal). They have Donaire in super bantamweight who is frankly a bigger star than Mares in terms of ratings.
The guys I listed are almost all top 20 or top 10 pound for pound fighters. HBO has the budget to invest in these varied divisions.
Showtime has tied themselves to Golden Boy for better or worse. I doubt they will have enough funds to invest in these other divisions, since they will have to cover many of the GBP "stars" that will now only fight on their network.
I have not even mentioned Top Rank's four big stars in the vicinity of welterweight, Manny Pacquiao, Tim Bradley, Juan Manuel Marquez and Brandon Rios. Those four guys are as good as Golden Boy's best four guys at the same weight, they are certainly good enough to carry shows on their own.
When has Froch,Kessler or Bute ever fought on HBO last time I checked the Super 6 was on Showtime as well Froch vs Bute. Sergio is about done and so is Manny and Marquez. Rios has sold as many PPV's as me and which company holds all the elite fighters in his weight class.
Im keeping my hbo subscription just in case jmm vs pac 5 is made, ill have the "cancel subscription" button ready to be pushed 1 second after marquez ktfoes manny again...
After that ill crack a tecate open and lit a veladora to san juan manuel, the saint of all pinoy insomniacs, theres no pinoy he cant put to sleep...

Ummmm your HBO subscription ain't gonna help if that fight gets made. That will be on PPV, buddy.

there's a couple of really dumb posters in this thread...
so hbo has the rep...who gives a sh1t, people don't subscribe to a network because of the network's rep...it's about their programming and hbo is looking piss poor in that department when cutting ties with gbp...
which leads to the budget question...how many of u really believe hbo won't limit their budget as a result of this decision? I don't think they're looking to make a loss here..while the signing of mayweather and adding to the stable of gbp will likely add subscribers and increase SHO's budget for boxing...it's simple economics really
tr doesn't have a deep stable...I find it laughable people mention fighters like vargas or alvarado who are entertaining but nowhere near elite...shaw, dibella, duva promote few good champions, goossen still has ward though
Exactly my thoughts.. This...
Its over for Showtime and GBP
Remember when GBP put BHop vs Dawson on PPV?
Thats the kind of trash your gonna get on showtime now

HBO will be fine. They been through worse when Tyson and Don King left for Showtime years ago. HBO will move forward in another direction and again be strong. This will give them a chance to work with other promoters and these other Promoters will benefit by the chance to grow stronger. Believe it or not, this will hurt Golden Boy more than it will HBO. It is no secret HBO is more willing to put up the bigger bucks for fights and has many more viewers.
Well The best still in HBO! Not only in 140s!
Dude, if i remember well you are the guy who posted a video of your son calling floyd a faag, right? Dont let your hatred cloud your judgement, not because mannys promoter is with HBO makes that network better, in fact networks should be independent of promoters and should be buying the best fights out there regardless of whos promoting them, bad business decision to close the door to a whole plethora of fights..
Closing the door to a promotion outfit with many good fighters will hit them no matter what, you can see it here where regular boxing fans are talking about canceling subscriptions, if i was a stockholder of time warner who owns HBO i would be mad, this BAD business decission will have repercussions in loss of revenue, you cant count on that..
I've just upgraded my fios package to Ultimate.. Now have showtime... No way I'm dropping HBO... Aside from their programming, I trust Hershmen and TR will continue to put strong fights together. Besides to the casual viewer they will watch whatever fighters HBO puts out there.
So not only are you a PAC-tard but you're an arum tard too? Lol gbp is in a much better position than tr
HBO made the decision to make that fight a PPV.
That's your opinion, but it doesn't change the fact that HBO has a much better brand when it comes to boxing than Showtime and a lot of that is due to their heritage...a heritage built with guys like Lampley, Lederman and Merchant. Period. You gave very rationale arguments for the Showtime guys, but brand affinity isn't rational, it's emotional. And that's why big fights on Showtime will feel less big than if they were on HBO. This may begin to change, but for now, Showtime as a brand for boxing remains 2nd tier to HBO.
Thank about it like this...this Showtime All Access no matter how good will come off like a wannabe 24/7. That's brand power. HBO has it, Showtime is TRYING to get it. Their commentators fall into this same category.
Fair enough and I agree that HBO has a more known brand. I just don't think it's better, and in time things can change. I understand the history HBO has, I grew up watching it but everything comes to and end and if they have severed ties with GB, that could be trouble for them.
GB is the future of boxing, let's be real. Also, fans will go to who has the best fights and you will be surprised as to how fast the past is forgotten and how they jump on board of Showtime if they deliver the better product.
I could be wrong, but this sounds like a Golden Opportunity for 50 Cent imo, HBO is going to need that new spark to recover after this move, so they may very well start becoming more willing to work with him and his fighters, it will be interesting to see what happens next.

broner isn't signing with SMS who is he gonna fight Billy Dib and Gamboa. To much talent from 140-154 for Broner to make a dumb decision like that.
you say that as if broner really wants to fight that type of talent.

Yeah.....that won't happen. Broner is an Al Haymon fighter, he'd be more likely to sign with Mayweather Promotions. 50 Cent can offer deals all he wants, but what has he done???
what has mayweather promotions done?

HBO Subscribers = 29 Million
Showtime Subscribers = 22 Million
BTW
Showtime and HBO don't get the subscription money you pay to them, that's not how it works. They get their money from contracts they sign with cable companies. That's why every cable company charges different for the channels, can run promotions all the time, and ect. They want to recoup the money they pay to showtime and HBO to broadcast their station.
This is why not every company has Epix because most of the major cable companies haven't agreed to pay Epix for their station.
I have both so doesnt matter for me but Showtime has been putting on good cards while HBO has been crap. Yeah good fight this past weekend but nobody saw that coming. If you say you did you a liar.
