Normally he is spot on, but last night he was laughably biased.
Every time he said something he was completely contradicted by the action in the ring.
I totally agree. From the moment he said "i love" Bradley every Jones comment was biased towards Bradley. Jones mentioned some **** about a pre fight interview with Bradley. It was clear from last nite that it was from that interview that this bias developed.
Nuff respect to Jones still.
Roy is always biased to his fellow african-american boxers but last night was just horrendous. I had to turn down the volume after the third round and i was pissed about it cause i couldn't hear the crowd and the action. I'm thinking of complaining to HBO and asking for my money back. I don't know if i'll buy the next PPV if it has Roy commentating.
He also said in round 10 or 11 that Ruslan can't hurt Bradley anymore and that Bradley is the one hurting Ruslan when clearly that is not the case at all. He kept saying ruslan is hurt bad as well but ruslan looked far from being hurt. He sucked last night, but Kellerman did a good job I thought. He put Roy in his place quite a few times.
I just watched the HBO broadcast and yeah Roy was pretty bad. He kept insisting that both fighters were hurt when only Bradley was staggering like a drunk and Provodnikov was on top of him. The thing that shocked me is when he said "Bradley is in a better position right now because this is the type of fight that he's used to" I was like WTF? Bradly had never been in a non stop brawl like that. Even Kellerman was on point when he said "Bradley has no answer for Provodnikov's overhand right" which was true but Roy insisted "yes he does, he has his own right hand" but that shot wasn't effective.
Very disappointed in Roy.
I LOL'ed when he said "yes he does" because literally 2 seconds later that same punch nailed Bradley and was hurt pretty bad. That shut him up, i think he was in the middle of explaining to Kellerman what Bradley can do to avoid the punch but I guess he stopped himself when tht punch landed lol
Roy does this all the time and it pisses me off.
He will say "he hurt him bayyyyyyaddd" 10-15 times a fight on good shots that land square but don't even buckle the guys legs.
The other thing about Roy that drives me nuts is hearing him talk about how fighters are taking too much punishment or putting themselves in long term danger.
He's always getting all preachy about sh*t when he the bright shining example of what happens to guys who hang on too long.
there doesnt have to be blatant signs in order for a fighter to be hurt, certainly his legs dont have to buckle. someone who fought himself knows this and i generally think roy does a good job picking up on fighters being hurt based on more subtle things.
of course he makes mistakes just like the rest of us, in this fight he just happened to make more of them than usual. but to be fair provodnikov was buzzed a few times, its wasnt obvious but it was there and roy as usual was the only one to pick up on it.
roy the fighter has nothing to do with roy the commentator. when you fight you dont think about the long term damage you take, if you did you wouldnt be able to go in there and fight in the first place. i give credit to roy for being able to put that aside when commentating and making very valid points about the damage fighters take.
whenever he made a point about a fighter taking punishment hes been spot on. he certainly was last night, it was a war! roach wasnt thinking about stopping the fight for no reason. ppl need to voice their concerns about fighters health more often, these are real ppl with families. their health always comes first.
I think it was pretty obvious who he wanted to win when listening to him on this fight, but I didn't really think he did too badly, he was out a bit though especially when Bradley was beginning to take over he thought that was it but then Provo came back and again rock Bradley badly. The fight was quite unpredictable to be honest so I wouldn't pay too much to him getting it wrong a bit.
Roy is always horrible as a commentator. He just waits for his time to say "So and so is hurt! He's hurt! He's hurt Jim. He's hurt bad!" He does this multiple times in every fight. He also talked about how both fighters were "equally hurt and ready to go" last night in like the third round before Bradley had even really landed a clean shot. At least they got him to stop talking about God every two seconds. Now if they can get him to just stop stepping all over what Jim and Max say it would be great. Remember when Jim said (I think it was in the Pac Marquez 4 fight) "At the end of the night these two fighters will know each other better than anyone else ever could." Only to have Roy chime in with "And so will everybody else." He sucks. But so do the vast majority of ex fighters.
I think Roy is usually on point with his analysis but when he's wrong he's ridiculously wrong. And he's very stubborn and keeps digging himself into a hole instead of admitting he's wrong.
I miss the man in your avatar, he was my favorite commentator on HBO.
Apart from he said that at the very start of the round not the end.
so what? that makes no difference.
bradley came out boxing at the start of the round having been hurt in the previous one. roy rightfully made the point that hes making the necessary adjustments and is now fighting his kind of fight.
like is said before, he isnt breaking down how the fight is going. he doesnt need to wait and see how well bradley does boxing. roy just wants to make the point that hes trying to adapt and make it a different kind of fight, a fight more beneficial to himself.
he was spot on.

And who cares if hes bias or unbiased. If he knows Bradley better or on some personal level...its human nature that he may lean to his favor a little more.
He still gave Provodnikov his props. And i can see why he was talking more on Bradley...OMG did you see the come back and the survival of Bradleys heart not to stay down or go down! Provodnikov was like a head hunter wanting the kill and Bradley was fighting for his life.
And in the end someones worried about what Roy said or didnt say! gimmie a fuking break! :WORD:
Quite a lot of people.
Why would anyone want to listen to biased commentary.

It was some, but not too bad; i dont think he was too familiar with Prov ( like 1 poster mentioned he could even remember his name at the end of the fight)
Lampley had me laughing more trying to get anyone who would listen to agree about the 10-8 rounds.
He also kept saying Provodnikov was hurt badly in the 2nd round. He didnt look hurt to me.
