Bernard Hopkins Talks PEDS
The oldest boxer to win a major title, Bernard Hopkins joined Jim Rome on his radio program. Hopkins, 48, scored a unanimous decision over Tavoris Cloud to claim the IBF light heavyweight championship Saturday night. Given his age and the culture of sports today, Jim asked Hopkins if he was using any performance enhancers.
“No, never,” Hopkins said. “I don’t even like wine in my shrimp scampi.”
Hopkins wanted to make sure everyone knows his stance on PED’s and how he has achieved his success.
“You all got a guy… corporate America, mainstream America,” said Hopkins. “You got a guy named Bernard Hopkins that’s closer to 50 than 30 and he’s telling you all, this is how you do it. The kids, the other athletes, high school, college, pros, you know what? You can do it the right and straight way and I’m the poster boy for that. Nobody gave me that job, I took it and I’m bold and loud with that message.”
Hopkins thinks he knows why his achievements haven’t turned into major endorsement deals.
“Because mainstream America don’t care two (expletive) about boxers or boxing, period.”
This look like a guy juicing up to you?

How about this?

He has hardly any definition at all. He won the fight using skill and technique. Barely throwing over 300 punches in a 12 round doesn't sound like the epitome of cardiovascular endurance to me either.
Give the guy his credit and quit saying he is lying now about his lifestyle because he has been singing the same tune for 20 years.
Why is this even an issue? Has there ever been a legitimate reason to why Hopkins would be accused of this? No. Despite that, people are going to somehow make some conspiracy theory about how he is, especially on this board.
Because Hopkins is an outlier, and in an era where drugs are rampant outliers are always going to be suspicious.
In many ways it's not fair, but until you have an anti-doping system in place that is actually credible to the public then a lot of guys in the sport are going to have this suspicion hanging over them. That's just the way it is.
Just because the rest of the guys can't do what some of these boxers do at 40 like JMM or 50 like hopkins doesn't mean they are juicing. These guys live boxing, that's what they do.
I believe that others for example Hatton would have lasted alot longer in boxing if it wasn't for all his bad habits outside the ring.

Seems only when someone is winning, they're taking steroids. All the losers must be taking the wrong ones then.

Someone tell that uneducated knucklehead that the ethanol evaporates when you cook it.
In this day and age, every boxer is suspicious, one in his late 40s that is still competing at a world championship level especially. Doesn't mean we should treat him like he is juicing without something solid to go on.
Whaaa?! I thought for sure he'd come out and say he uses PED's.
Well, this puts my mind at ease

No, it's because your style doesn't really excite anyone. Smart fighter, but people were more interested in a fight that broke out in the stands than yours with Cloud
Hopkins is right, Mainstream America doesn't give two craps about boxing.
If I were a car maker I would have signed B hop to an endorsement deal a long time ago, he would be perfect for a reputable brand with cars that have longevity like B hop.
But part of the reason why endorsers do not like getting behind boxers with big contracts is because unlike sports stars if a boxer gets KO'd or loses his value goes down, with guys like Kobe or Lebron they can lose games because its normal to lose games in a season and easier to comeback from that.

Doesn't Pacquiao have an endorsement deal?
I bet B-Hop could get an endorsement deal if he just said he was on TRT, dude would be working till the day he died~.
He is right though that the mainstream doesn't really care about boxing though, but on the flip side though for all B-Hop accomplished he never really transcended the sport or was ever really all that popular in the sport, in fact he is probably more popular now than he has ever been.
