We as fans need to dump the wba, wbc, wbo and ibf. Could anyone imagine if there were four basketball leagues instead of the NBA. Four world champions and they never had to play the other champions because they are in another organization.
Then imagine if the lakers could pay one organization for a ranking or other basketball champions could have their title stripped so Boston could play Toronto for a vacant championship? Pro BasketBall Would Die!!
Could you imagine if the Olympics gave four gold medals for each competition and the four medalist in each event would never have to go against each other. The Olympics would fade away.
That is what the WBA-WBO-IBF-WBO has done to our sport.
Like leaches they have sucked the lifeblood from the sport!
as a boxing fan, haven't paid attention to belts pretty much since I started watching. it's about the fighters and fights, not the titles anymore. belts are just for advertising the product and I use Adblock.
and in other news.. water is wet. lol
besides there are hundred of basketball leagues, the nba is just the best one. but the problem in boxing isnt the organization bodies, its the fans. there are only multiple belts around because we as fans let it happen.
our favourite fighters can do no wrong so if they win a paper title we will pretend it means everything, we would never force them to unify it either. only when fighters we dont like win titles do we turn around and get all high and mighty about the situation.
if fans werent such hypocrites we could easily put pressure on fighters to unify, at which point having several titles wouldnt be bad thing. it might even be a good thing if we looked at them for what they truly are, contenderships.
holding a belt doesnt make you champion, it makes you a contender to the real champion if there is one. if there isnt a true champion a belt is an automatic inclusion into the tournament to decide an undisputed champion which we should all demand take place if there is no true champion out there.
but we dont, everyone should kow our favourite fighter is the best at the weight, he doesnt have to prove it. hell he can even make up his own weightclass if he feels like it, doesnt make his worthless, piece of **** title any less meaningful in or eyes. then we blame the sanctioning bodies.
It's bad from the fans perspective. But put yourself in the position of a fighter.
It's a popularity contest. If you can't sell tickets you will be overlooked and avoided. Obtaining an alphabet belt is some fighters only chance of landing big fights.
I think the bigger issue is promotional beefs. If promoters worked together and matched the best with the best, we would have one real champ per division.
There are only two ways it could happen. A Russian billionaire or Arab Sheik buying up all the organisations and running the sport as his own, or government intervention.
Without that centralised control you'll have jumped up little dictators like Sulaiman and Arum everywhere you look, all trying to carve out their own kingdoms. Without someone powerful enough to push those guys to one side you'll always have this chaotic, disorganised system where nobody's powerful enough to take control, but they're all powerful enough to mess up anyone else's attempts to do so.
