He should have cleaned out 135 or at least gone to 140 if he was going to move up in weight. There were better options available for some great matchups.
Instead he is cherry picking the worst welterweight champion out there.
And I say this as a fan of Adrien Broner (the fighter, not the personality.)
its an opinion based on cano punching malignaggi a lot more and a lot harder. your opinion is malignaggi used his boxing(moving around, jabbing at air and getting hit more) to win. guess it depends on what you like.
I have no problem with that, apart from the needless sarcasm in brackets. My opinion is that Malignaggi simply won more rounds in a close fight, it's an opinion that a lot of people held and expressed.
I can accept the view that someone thought Cano won just like I can even accept the view someone thinks Hopkins beat Calzaghe, a case can be made for both.
What I don't accept is that it's unquestionable that Cano won like it was a shut-out or a wide UD or something when that wasn't the case.
The Brooklyn crowd booed the decision. That says it all.
So we're judging by crowd reaction now? I guess Chavez Jr must have beaten Martinez given how the crowd were cheering for him at the end. Forget the crowd, score the fight.
No he didn't, people need to stop repeating that like it's fact when it's only an opinion. It was a close fight (a genuinely close fight, not a pretend close fight like Judah-Matthysse). I had Malignaggi by a round the knockdown making the scores closer and so did plenty of others. It wasn't a fight Cano dominated, it was one in which he did better than expected and made it close.
One thing's for sure, if Malignaggi manages to beat Broner he won't be getting any credit for it from some posters.

its horrible simply for the fact is if he wasn't who he was he wouldn't have gotten this shot.
vasquez or burns wouldn't even be considered for this oppurtinity but broner was.
i think broner needs to look at his career and realize while his career has highlights and style, it doesn't have substance except for demarco and a lucky win over ponce.
if he beats paulie he needs to either goto 140 or back down to 135.
malignaggi just lost to cano. this is so terrible. this isn't like hopkins fighting cloud after he lost to campillo because campillo was a top 3 light heavyweight and cloud knocked him down twice to make it somewhat close. cano wasn't even a top 30 140 pounder and paulie was not only beat up and knocked down but outboxed! fu-ks sakes he sucks.

Thats what i've been trying to say, Malignaggi even started to make stuff up about his jab and Cano on his post fight interviews. Can you belive that?:nonono:
best thing is that he discribes his knockdown as a pleasant "out- of body-expirience". lol @ 5:47
This is what pisses me off about Paulie. I was a fan until that fight. He clearly loses, gets beat up and dropped and he acts like he actually won that fight. You'd think he'd be humbled by it but no. He was boo'd and embarrassed in his hometown yet acts like people are crazy for realizing Cano kicked his ass. I've talked to him many time, he live on my brothers block but he's this "world champ" that was beat up and outboxed by a nobody

wow this is the saddest video ever. even sadder than those sarah mclachlan commercials with the sick animals.
But paulie is a champ who cares that cano whooped his ass?
This will make Broner a 3 division champ! Terrific fight!

I disagree with everyone saying this. 1st of all Paulie is a good fighter but its only cherry picking if he wins and then milks it afterward. People act like he's going to fight Paulie 40 times in a row.
If he fights Paulie and then a bum next, you can rip him but thats not the case as of now. There are a ton of good names for him to fight from 140-147 and most likely he will find one guy that everyone will be happy with in his next fight.
I want everyone to tell me who they think he's fighting next if he wins? Pretty much every single possible opponent is a decent fight. There arent really any bums he could fight after that. If he does then thats the time to rip him. Not now
After Paulie he'll fight a bum then he'll look to unify and fight the 2nd worst belt holder Devon Alexander which is an even shyttier fight than Malignaggi
I'll give Broner a little cred if he fights Lopez after Lopez beats Maidana but Broner's people will never do that.

Come on, Cano is a pretty good young fighter! Pretty big guy despite being from 140. And Paulie doesn't necessarily get to pick guys who will make him look good. Ok soooo maybe Cano was brought in to lose for Paulie's NY return but that is only before the fight starts, he went out and made a good account of himself just like he did against Morales. Are we holding it against guys for being put in and having competitive fights now? We might think there is more money in Paulie holding that belt but Cano can go off and make money in Mexico just the same, so I think there is a little bit of a misconception of who was there to win, lose, and be a victim... it looked pretty 50/50.
I don't mind the Paulie fight because he is a mover and I want to see that against Broner whether it was Vazquez, Abril or this, at least there is a durability factor with these guys at WW. Not really sure where the will go afterward so maybe you guys being skeptical is fair - worst case I can see Mosley creeping in the shadows
What Russ said plus I have a question for you D.....
What top 10 guys would you favor Paulie over at 140 or 147???
Well Im probably a lil biased because Ive been a Paulie fan from way back. I was probably the 1st guy on this site making threads about him. Back then half didnt know who he was and the other half thought he was a club fighter. He was good and improved. Then when he got to McGirt, dude killed his style. I thought he looked horrible in that Hatton fight. He wouldnt have even beaten an amateur the way he was fighting under Buddy.
Then he left Buddy and got pretty good again but has been 50/50. I thought he looked very good against Senchenko. Thats Paulie now. You never know what youre going to get. One fight he looks like a good fighter and the next he cant move and can only throw a jab that wouldnt even hurt a kid. I thought he was great against a prime Cotto.
Again though, none of it matters to me. Its still a solid enough fight to me. It would be solid to me if he were fighting a bum just due to the fact that he was just at 130 and now is basically jumping 3 weight classes within a couple of fights. Thats something to see to me. Then Paulie is still solid enough. Again, its just about the follow up.
1st off, how many others could he have fought? Burns didnt want it, Vazquez pulled out. If Broner is not bent on fighting him then you make him fight you by beating Burns. He didnt do that. He pulled out. Everyone at 140 has a fight scheduled. Then people say he's picking the weakest at WW but he's suppose to. He was just at 130. And I still wouldnt be shocked if he starts calling out Pac after the Paulie fight.
Either way Im betting that he fights someone that everyone thinks is at the least a decent challange next. I also told someone the other day that I for one still think its cool that a guy is changing weights. Its like old skool. He was just at 130 a couple fights ago, just fought at 135, next fight at 147, and his next fight after that could be at 140. Thats still pretty cool to me. Now I know its about the opponents but it hasnt been all that bad. I mean he's fought Ponce, Demarco, now Paulie, and we'll see what he does next. Thats not as horrible as people make it seem
I think Broner has put a lot of this hate on himself. He's called out too many fighters in the past, which I am sure his management has got on him for. I haven't herd him call out any of the big fighters lately, but he does say they are easy money when asked. I think it will be another year or two before he steps up his game. Most of the big names out there are considerably older than Broner with much more experience, so its understandable.
