Im turning 18 in July and will be majoring in Business Administration next year in college. My goal is to become a NY promoter and trainer. I dont wanna hear how ****ty of a job being a promoter can be, ive done my research. I truly love boxing and i know its my passion, i dont care how bad the money might be as long as im doing what i love.
Is their any intern jobs for boxing? Not sure if you guys have ever heard of anything. Any info, advice will be greatly appreciated. The goal here is to just get my feet wet in this industry while i work on getting my degree.
Lots of green K will be given to anyone that helps. Thanks in advance :boxing:
The cost involved with starting a company as well as the time you have to put into it is more than you realise from the sound of your posts.
Get on Twitter and look for Michelle Rosado who has started her own promotions company and put on her first event in January. That woman never slept and was working around the clock.
Also, maybe try to get involved with a PR who would be willing to teach you the ropes. Most PRs that I know started out working for FREE for a few YEARS until they learnt their craft. If you seriously want to get involved with it, PM me and I can put you in contact with a close friend of mine who is a PR out of Phoenix, but I don't think you have thought this through if you think you can make money to live comfortably and do it as a hobby.
Awesome. DMing you now.
When i say "living comfortably" i mean being able to pay the bills. Idc if i have to live in my car. A lot of you dont understand how much i love boxing. This is my passion

Yeah my parents own a business ill be working their, saving up money, till whenever.
Becoming a trainer is more of a long term goal. I want to open a gym and through time see what i can do. Its MUCH harder to be a successful trainer than a successful promoter.
Perhaps a responsible letter asking for advice, to one or more of the promoters might be a help. You can figure out which ones might be sympathetic to your goal; you might even get a sort of a job there which would show you more. When you were saying that you knew what is entailed, you didnt mention the dirt corruption and bad faith etc. which are massive.
I don't believe that anybody can be an occasional promoter as a sideline. It takes lots of LEGAL committment with money and fees, etc. as you say you already know. Many years ago my late uncle was an occasional promoter, and I believe he lost money every time, and he was always a partner, not a solo promoter.
This guy knows. I don't think promoting is something you do as a "hobby".

Appreciate the advice. Interesting. What state did your uncle promote in?
In a sport like this, it's more about who you know rather than what you know.
This ^
Try get in touch with any promoter you can and tell them your goals and kiss more ass than you've ever kissed. Promoters need "hook-ups" to be successful, otherwise the costs and competition will eat them up. Good luck dude, I hope you can at least get some experience in promoting.

So in other words you do care about money... to live comfortably and support your family you'd need a stable income. I honestly think you're deluding yourself, so you want to be a promoter as a "hobby" and make side money of it, as well as being a trainer and ANOTHER job?

No i really dont care about money. As long as im living comfortably and can support my family im cool with whatever im doing. Being a promoter is going to be more of a hobby, and a way of "side money". I know i wont make enough to have it as my only income. Im fine with that.

do you have any idea how these things work?
i can answer that for you. no offense, but you don't. you're 17 (and a half,) after all.
lou dibella and bob arum both went to harvard law school.
if you want to become a promotor you're going to need a ton of money to get you started anyway. put in ten years as a lawyer.
lol i do actually. obviously i dont know the ins and outs but i have an idea of what i need to do.
listen you guys need to understand one thing, im not saying ill be promoting the next event at cowboy stadium my first year promoting. i know EXACTLY what it takes to be a promoter. It takes a looooonnnnggg time to get good money out of it, and some of you clowns forget the fact that im 17 YEARS OLD. time is on my side
lol no way. Sports management and or a Business Administration degree is all i need

Funny you say that, i contacted him last week. He gave me some good advice. One of the good guys in this sport
You're 17. Not making money to "chase your dreams" sounds cool for now. Because as it is you probably make little to no money right now, in other words you don't fully understand the value of a dollar yet. That will change. Somewhere in your mid to late 20's your ideals will also change and ultimately the practical things in life rent, food, your relationship, family, or your plans to start one will supersede your desire to play a bigger part in the hobby that you are passionate about.
The road of a boxing promoter is a looooooong road as it is there are probably only 7 or 8 company's most people can name off the top of their head in the entirety of the whole world.
As someone posted previously. Have a plan b. you might be that 1 in a billion but the math says you are probably not.
