Being as the 154lb division isn't filled with big marquee fights besides a Canelo fight, Where does Cotto go from here? I've always believed since he went to 154 that he chose to go to 154 because he chose to make it easier on himself making weight, but he's still pretty small for a Jr Middleweight. With the Welterweight division as it is with fighters like Bradley, Ortiz, Berto, Guerrero, and a dream match with Marquez and Cotto maybe having a slim chance of happening (we can only hope), wouldn't it be more beneficial (at least financially) to venture back to 147? I just have a tough time believing he can't make the weight more than not wanting to.
Thoughts?
I agree with the posters saying it was dumb of him to even leave 147 in the first place. He's not a SWW.
To be honest I think he's just lazy when it comes to shredding that much weight, his walk around weight is pretty high from what I heard. He should have stayed at 147, and I think he can make it but he doesn't have the willpower to try.
Cotto wanted to fight Margarito at 150-151 so I think its still possible but he would have to focus more on his food intake and training. Mosley did it then so can Cotto .....
Cotto was more effective at 147. He would be able to hurt most opponents in that division. He is not the same fighter at 154.
Its time for Cotto to retire! Since fighting the Cheater in 08 his record is;
W5 L4 and 2 ko's loses. Thats not exactly a great record when you've done so much better in the past! If your a true fan of a fighter you need to see when its time to retire before the fighter gets into trouble with his mental health. I like Cotto alot, he's done very well for himself and his family. I'd like to see him in ten years as a happy healthy ex-boxer with his thoughts intact and his speech clearly defined! I hope he retires now, safe and content. Ray
I agree whole heartidly, and I love Cotto. However I'd like to see Cotto end 2013 on a high note and then retire. 2012 was a down year all around, losing two decisions to two tough opponents. I wouldn't expect anything less than tough opponents but yeah, two more fights and call it a career
Early 2013 -- Carlos Molina -- a high quality opponent, top 10, dangerous but winnable and good resume stamper
Late 2013 -- Go out with a bang -- Pacquiao II, Mayweather II or newly shined JMM or even Tim Bradley. All good fights, even if I think he'd win only two of those
Whatever happens, happens...
I voted yes. I have always believed that was welterweight was his weight and he was not drained at 145 for Pacquiao but of course I can't prove it. He likes to eat and does not like to take off those last few pounds. At 154 he is fighting guys that are naturally bigger than him. I believe he can make 147 with no problems and be at full strength and weighing 155 to 158 on fight night.
Cotto looks like a fat ass at 154, he doesn't want to go down in weight because hes too lazy.
spinning around in circles and catching tennis balls is NOT training.
Yes i think he can make 147. But i think the choice of weight a boxer decides to fight in has got a lot to do with how much food they want to eat. Some boxers like their food more than others.
Pac has to eat more than he would like to be at 147. Whereas Cotto probably pigs out more than he needs. Probably wants to eat more than the 2000 calories a day a average man needs.
Put it this way. He turned down millions of dollars for a Pacquiao rematch because he didn't want to drain himself below 150. How can he all of the sudden make 147 with no problem?
Did you ever see the food he eats during camp!? If he cuts out that Puerto Rican food his mother cooks for him and stick to a good diet he could easily make 147! He's a hard worker, but none of that means **** if you don't fuel your body right

He wanted the rematch with Margarito at 150.
I think he can make 147, but he looks big and fat when he's not training, it gets harder to cut.
Can he make 147? Sure but would he be healthy? Nah, he was already draining himself towards the end of his career at that weight so the sensible decision is to move up.
Gotta love that not too long ago most of his fanatics that went on vacation were saying he can go to 160 and rule there. How times change.
You know very well that no one here was saying Cotto should move up to 160. Where did you get that from?
I'm trying to be nice because he's a quality young man. Its his fans that are "dense"! He's DONE!!! He fought in spurts against Floyd and thats the best he could do, he was trying but its not there!! Open your eyes!! Ray
Cotto has always been unlucky when it comes to weight imo. First he was too big for 140 but too small for 147 ( i think the jump from 140-147 is the toughest one to make, it took floyd a while to even adjust) then he became too big for 147 but way too small for 154. I honestly do not think he could make 147 effectively i think with hard work he could boil down to 151 at the most.

Man its been four years now since 147. He'd look horrible and probably perform as much. He's in a situation where he's kinda too big for 147 and too small for 154
