Thought he looked excellent against Johnson. I think he's already good enough to beat Arthur Abraham, give him 18 months and he could beat Froch. I just hope when the time is right, Andre Ward won't duck Groves like he ducked Lucian Bute
Agree with everyone here, good fringe contender, might win a world title (honestly I thought he would have beat Stieglitz, why did he drop out of that fight?), but won't amount to much more.
In fact, I think Bika would beat him right now.
As a big Groves fan I'd love to see him fight Bika, that would be a real acid test for George
2013 could be a good year for Groves to get his name out there. If he boxes well..i see Stieglitz and possibly Abraham as winnable fights for him. Although IMO hes not ready for the real top names in the division.
A steady 2013 facing good competition will do him the world of good..although i wouldn't consider putting him in the ring with Froch at all anytime in the near future.
Agree with this entirely, George is at least 2 years away from facing someone as good as Froch or Ward

Groves needs to fix his defense, he is a tough bastard, i can see him causing problems for many boxers and winning a major title
He sometimes tries to fight like David Haye, but he simply doesnt have the reflexes for it.
let's see if he can handle a top american like tommy karpency or shawn hawk first. my gut says he can't!
If you look at George's record, the guys he's faced like J Degale and K Anderson, those were dangerous opponents for a novice when he faced them. I don't think George is going down the 'win the WBO and defend it against road sweepers and nightclub bouncers route', even though George is promoted by Fwank. I think George has been matched up tough for a prospect, Glen Johnson may be old but he knows enough to trouble any 15 fight novice
That's the second post of yours that's made me laugh today, along with your avatar! you're a funny guy daggum
I'm a big fan of Groves & have been for a long time but I'm embarrassed right now. People like you who accuse world champions of ducking, or being scared, are just pathetic.
Can't you just be a fan of a boxer without all this childish name calling? What happened to boxing fans? When did they start acting like teenage girls (I like so & so, your favourite smells bad).
Just support your fighter. Go to his fights. That's what fans do. Leave the cyber warrior stuff for the under 12s.
Rant over.
I didn't mean to cause offence, and I never called anyone names. I just noted that when Bute was a top undefeated champ, Ward wanted no part of him. If you look at the guys Ward has beaten, Kessler, Froch, Abraham, these guys have been tailor made for him. Bute would have caused him real problems, and Ward knew that
I think he could do ok once he figures out what sort of fighter he wants to be. He has to fully curb his recklessness which could land him in trouble. He's had a couple injury issues too which have halted his progress a bit which is a shame. It's a shame he seems to swell/bruise and cut so easily as that could be a big issue against certain fighters.
He might have enough to grab a world title in a few years time but that said he doesn't beat Andre Ward.
I'd like to see him against Abraham in a couple fights.
George did show recklessness, but he looks to have tightened up his defence, and was showing he could pick his shots against Johnson. Yeah I think in 12 months time, George would be good enough to beat Abraham by decision
first of all johnson is shot, that win shouldnt impress anyone. second while i think groves can win a title from abraham i dont think he will ever be one of the best at 168.
its such a strong division. you got guys like anthony dirrell, stevenson, rodriguez, eubank and degale (who i thouth beat groves) coming up. all of whom i consider better prospects than groves. oosthuizen might be too i havent seen enough of him to tell yet.
that would make groves the sixth or seventh best prospect at the weight. then take all the guys currently on top of the division into account like ward, froch and bute.
i really dont see that bright a future for groves, hes a solid fighter but he isnt special imo. and hes in a very good division.
I like George, as a fighter and a person. He has good pop and is deceptively quick. I thought he showed an excellent defence against deGale. BUT ...
George needs to step it up and get a new promoter.
DeGale is going to be on Channel 5, and fighting 4-5 times this year in front of 2million television audiences. George only got out twice last year, and is stuck on BoxNation which has thousands of viewers. Even though George is better, deGale will be the household name.
I'd like to see him fight someone live next. Not another faded over-the-hill former contender. He is better than this now. He is world ranked, and needs to be fighting live, relevant fighters guys accordingly.
Im pretty sure he got dropped by froch in sparring so i doubt he beats froch with no headguard and 10 oz gloves at the moment but as froch gets older george would have a better chance

Do any of you guys think Degale could go further? I'm a big fan of both
Based on recent form, no.
I thought he edged Groves in their fight, but since then Groves has made very good progress while DeGale seems to have taken steps back. That whole thing he's doing right now of slapping, working in spurts and then resting on the ropes is going to land him in trouble.
George will definitely get to world level and fight for a world title, and probably win at some point in his career. Whether he can make that next step up to elite level, with the likes of Ward, Froch and Kessler we will see. You never know, he's developing well, one thing George needs to be wary of is trading with punchers.

I go with the majority on here regarding George Groves' qualities. I think he can be a fringe world class/contender but will fall short of elite. Not that it's a problem at all. He's a good fighter but not everyone can be at the very top of the sport. Groves can do better than most but I doubt he'll reach the pinnacle. He'll have a good career, if there are no major mishaps.
Very Talented, has excellent speed and quickness and can be very slick at times but he tends to get sloppy defensively and just depends on avoiding punches instead of trying to block some of them as well
so I think Groves can go pretty far, can he beat Andre Ward...PROBABLY NOT but he could probably beat guys like Adonis Stevenson, Arthur Abraham and I think his style would give Froch some problems
His pasty skin is a big worry he marks and cuts easy but talent wise very good offensively fast, seems too have good power, good stamina and nice combos defensively he has too improve if he fights Abraham.I think a perfect fight would be Stiglitz be a good test but i think he could be fighting AA.Groves is better then Degale
