He has Pedro Luis Diaz in his corner. Not saying I would favor him to win, but Diaz was a huge factor in the recent Floyd fight. He created the proper game plan that allowed Cotto to be very competitive. Do you think that Uncle Evangelista would have formulated the proper game plan to beat a prime Floyd? Hell no. However, a physically prime Cotto (at arguably his best weight) with the proper strategy has a very solid chance to beat PBF. Again, not saying that I would favor him, but if an end of prime/past prime (gtfo with that "washed up" Cotto BS) can win 4 rounds against Floyd, a prime one can grind out an ugly decision. 2007/2008 Cotto would not have fought Floyd the way he did in May - that swarming and cutting off the ring was a result of the Cuban trainer's intelligence and direction.
I re-watched this fight recently and scored it 10-2 Mayweather.
It wasn't as competitive as I thought it was originally when I watched live. Cotto made Mayweather's connects go down, but Floyd opened his hands up a bit more than he did vs guys like DLH. He made his adjustments and continued to land the clean effective blows round by round.
That was the most determined and studious Cotto would ever be vs Mayweather and he couldn't really do much. At 140 Floyd probably stops Cotto IMO. 147 wide UD maybe late stoppage if Floyd steps on the gas.
Cotto fought like the pre-Mosley, aggressive hunter he used to be against Mayweather. He doesn't need Diaz to fight that way in his prime, that's how he fought most the time anyway.
Cotto was ringside at Mayweather Gatti(Hatton was also)
at about .27 on the video you hear Jim Lampley saying "Cotto may want the winner of the fight(thats the reason he was there), but if its Mayweather he might not want that..."
Cotto and Hatton witnessed first hand the a$$ whipping of a lifetime that Mayweather put on Gatti. That was an a$$ whipping for the history books. click Part 1 and look at the whole fight.
They wanted no parts of that version of Mayweather.
Cotto was never getting Mayweather. Floyd and Hatton wanted the Cotto fight for years at that point but Cotto was Arum's new star, not to be touched.
Secondly, I doubt either were too worried about what Mayweather did to a punch-drunk, past-prime Gatti.
A prime Miguel Cotto from 2007-2008 had much faster hands and threw absolutely beautiful combinations with power. I agree that he had a shot to beat Floyd with the proper game plan, and I also agree that Diaz would have been the guy to train him.
Floyd had much better mobility back then. A shot to beat prime Mayweather? honestly, I don't see it. Floyd should have fought him though, the fight was there in 2008.

^this...physically prime Cotto + proper gameplan = good chance to beat Floyd

We all know Marquez was not a legit opponent at that time specially the ***** moved by Floyd coming way overweight in a catchweight fight.
From 140 to 147 what prime legit opponent did Floyd has fought?
Hatton (although admittedly not at his prime weight).
Ortiz (I think, I don't even know if he has a prime tbh. Maybe we can scratch that one off the list).
Guerrero (if it takes place, then I'll say that he's prime enough)
Prime Cotto gets UD'd by prime Mayweather.
I'm a Cotto fan, not a Mayweather fan.
If you're a Mayweather fan, you're disappointed he didn't take that fight in 2008.
I do actually. However, Cotto is more removed from his prime now than Mayweather is, and 147 is Cotto's best weight, whereas for Floyd it's 130-135. I don't believe that Floyd "chose" to fight Cotto's fight....more like he had no other choice but to do so. In all honesty, if I had to make a prediction, it's probably a majority decision for Floyd (something like 114-114, 115-113, 116-112). Without Pedro Diaz, Floyd probably gets a wide UD because Cotto can't catch him.Well no, I don't agree with you.
