Anybody remember the fight where the ref actually stepped in and warned one of the fighters for punching the other guy in the face? Like, warned him for doing what he was supposed to do?
It seems like it was an HBO fight, and Lampley was going nuts, but I can't remember if that's correct or not. Anyone know the fight I'm talking about?
Go to 5:20, warned for punching lol

Quick question, why couldn't Pacquaio do a double punch against Clottey?
hernandez gets dropped at which point the referee helps him up and then picks up the count at 2 even though hernandez been down like 5-6 seconds.

I've never seen that before. Incredible. Did anything happen to the referee?
Ottke-Reid was actually a joke, I wouldn't even give Sven four rounds in that fight... And Cortez is one of the best referees over the last 30 years in boxing, and nothing Hatton inbred fanatics says would change that, If you think Cortez is a sheet ref then you are a moron period... Hatton himself use to get away with murder with his own referee/uncle over here in Micky Vann and Dave Parris..
lol what? I know the rules man, you're allowed to punch while in a clinch.
Well that's the thing; it depends on who exactly is holding, how you're holding, etc. In general though you're supposed to be allowed to work while in a clinch.
And I'm not even talking about Ricky Hatton vs Floyd, I'm speaking in general. People who use Cortez as an excuse for Hatton are in denial. Hatton could never beat Floyd. But Cortez was a horrible ref, no question about that and he broke up fighters insanely quick. He literally wouldn't allow for inside fighting. But again, I'm not talking about Floyd/Hatton, just generally speaking.
thats all im saying. in most cases one fighter isnt doing all the clinching, both guys are usually holding eachother at which point they are both allowed to use the free hand.
but if one fighter is doing ALL the holding he isnt allowed to punch too. you cant grab onto a guy and hold him in place and hit him with the other hand, thats all im saying. but if that isnt the case you are allowed to work the free hand, like i said in most cases thats what happens. inside fighting makes for a bit of grappling, hatton always took it way too far though and cortez wasnt having it.
i agree cortez is a **** ref too acctually, the mayweather-hatton fight was one of the few fights he did fairly well in, not allowing hatton to cheat. like you say it wouldnt matter though, floyd is just in a completely diffrent class. he was even beating hatton on the inside when they were allowed to work there which makes these delusional hatton fans excuses even more absurd.
uhhm..yes. Boxing is a dirty sport and referees play a big part in that, as well the judges. You'd be very naive to believe otherwise, there are huge sums of money involved. In all three of those bouts the referee was corrupt, and there are many more besides (others have been mentioned in this thread).
:pat:
are you being serious right now? bcuz if you are i feel sorry for you.
i didnt say there isnt corruption in boxing, i said the fights you used as examples werent corrupt. cortez didnt screw hatton in the mayweather fight, he enforced the rules. all those british referees that allowed hatton to cheat over in england were the ones being corrupt.
if you wanna see a Hatton fight in which the ref was corrupt, then watch Hatton vs Tszyu.
If the ref in the Hatton-Mayweather fight would have let Hatton do all that dirty stuff he usually gets away with in his UK fights, then you would be perfectly fine with it, right?
Let it go man, dont know if it is your love for Hatton or your hate for Floyd, but Floyd dominated Hatton, the fight was not close and wrestling is not apart of boxing, you need to come to terms with reality cause i remember that scorecard you had up for a year after the fight that had Hatton winning, that is crazy man...they could fight 100 times with 100 different refs and Hatton would get dominated 100 times.just stop with the nonsense..Hatton was never on Floyds level, never
^^^
You're allowed to hit in a clinch as long as one hand is free. See Berto vs Guerrero. That's how fights are supposed to go (although the ref made a couple bad calls in that fight). Refs like Joe Cortez ruin many fights because they don't know the rules!
you are the one who doesnt know the rules. only if your oponent is the one holding are you allowed to work the free hand. if you are the one doing all the clinching you are not allowed to use the other hand to punch. that would be holding and hitting.
obviously it often becomes a judgement call to figure out whos the one doing the holding, thats where the issue lies. if both guys are holding eachother most referees let both of them work the free hand though, which i think is good.
but if just one guy is doing all the holding he isnt allowed to punch at the same time. which is exactly what hatton got away with his whole career until he fought floyd. jumping in, wrapping his arm around his oponent and holding him in place while he whacks him with the other hand, thats a foul.
the british refs let him get away with it so much alot of english fans think its within the rules, i laugh my ass off every time some dumbass goes on about how hatton lost bcuz he wasnt allowed to cheat like hes the victim.
it was not an HBO fight, it was Sven Ottke vs Robin Reid:

watch rounds 4 and 5 (link goes to that time mark)
disgraceful robbery, I only gave Ottke 2 rounds in this fight
He gets warned for punching him at 18:35
Sven Ottke comes to mind. You would get penalized for connecting punches on Ottke. Funniest thing I've seen really. I mean it's a boxing match and you'd get warned for hitting Ottke.
Reid hit him with a flush right hand and got warned

This has happened many times. Guerrero-Katsidis, Khan-Maidana, Hatton-Mayweather amongst others. Corrupt reffing.
I have seen all those fights and there was nothing corrupt going on in any of them.
The ref in Hatton-Mayweather just didn't let Hatton do the dirty stuff he usually does, but that is called good refereeing. Furthermore nobody in those fights was warned for punching.
If you wanna see a corrupt referee, then watch Gatti vs Mayweather of Reid vs Ottke.
uhhm.. no.
holding and hitting at the same time is a foul, as is hitting on the break. stop making a fool of yourself.
Your right but maybe he is on about hitting when one hand is free in Maidana Khan Cortez stopped Maidana a few times even though its legal.Cant remember did any off this happen in the other two fights

was it this one?
no. besides he was holding and hitting at the same time which is a foul.
like already posted it was ottke vs red, in germany ofcourse. another great example of german refereeing at its best is hernandez vs braithwaite.
hernandez gets dropped at which point the referee helps him up and then picks up the count at 2 even though hernandez been down like 5-6 seconds.
