After Manny Pacquiao made easy work of Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito, the howls of “Floyd ducked both of these fighters” reemerged. Many of these claims have been opinionated and have not yet seen proof of these allegations. I did write an article stating that Mayweather side stepping Margarito was a good move. And financially it was back then.
But upon my return to the article, I found facts that will support this article. Now, I know there will still be many who will contest these facts and continue with their barrage of name calling. But it’s not my job to control opinions; just give the facts and let the readers decide. But I want you to pay close attention to the quotes and who’s saying what.
After Mayweather defeated Zab Judah, he was offered 8 million to fight Antonio Margarito on August 12th 2006. Leonard Ellerbe had this to say after the Judah fight.
Floyd is not 100 percent healthy,” Ellerbe said. “He has a bruised right hand. His hand is not broken. It’s bruised, but it’s a bad bruise. He wants to go into any fight 100 percent healthy. If Antonio Margarito happens to be the best available option when he is healthy, so be it”.
“We are not turning down Margarito. I want to make that crystal clear. When and if he is the best available option for Floyd’s next fight, that’s the direction he will move in.” If you noticed, that was Ellerbe speaking. Not Floyd. Let’s move on.
Bob Arum, Mayweather’s promoter at the time said that Mayweather preferred to await the outcome of the May 6 Oscar De La Hoya-Ricardo Mayorga fight instead of committing to Margarito because he would prefer to fight De La Hoya.
Arum stated that Mayweather would have fought Margarito for the 8 million, but he wanted a guaranteed 10 million to fight Miguel Cotto and Ricky Hatton. Arum only guaranteed him 7 million. And for those who don’t know Cotto and Hatton were at the Mayweather-Gatti fight and Cotto was ranked number 5 by the ring at the time (Proof: Listen to the commentary Jim Lampley at the end of round 5) . Cotto had just moved up to the 140 pound weight class and he didn’t make an offer to fight Mayweather after the Gatti fight.
Arum said Mayweather also asked for $20 million to fight De La Hoya, a fight Arum said he wasn’t interested in participating in. “That’s not in the cards,” Arum said. “He wants $20 million for the De La Hoya fight? It’s not there. Sometimes, my man, you gotta know when to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em. We’ll talk about things down the road.” Notice this part Arum was talking.
What does Cotto or Hatton have to do with Margarito?
I realize that Cotto is in the video I posted, but I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about Margarito, and Arum never said that "I'm the reason Mayweather never fought Margarito", as you just claimed.
All you did was say that Arum only guaranteed Mayweather 7 million for Hatton and Cotto - Two fights I'm not even interested in talking about, and two fights that have nothing to do with this topic of conversation.
You need to read between the lines, it is all connected do you think Arum offered up Margarito for big money with no strings attached~ does that sound like Bob Arum? The Margarito fight wasn't even worth that much, so Floyd getting paid like that for that sort of unknown opposition who was less well known that Hatton or Cotto had to be for a reason correct?
The Margarito stuff was essentially all Bob Arum using free methods and stuff that was never going to work to promote Antonio Margarito, and people ate/eat that shit up

cause Mayweather was negotiating his resigning..since Arum refused to give him those guarantees he left and make a hell of alot more money.....simple as that..

it's no myth, its a proven fact, watch the youtube video, mayweather talking trash about margarito but once in front of him, he's all gentle and docile, was laughing at it so hard almost made my cereals come out through me nose strils
Nah I understand your posts perfectly, it just makes me so angry when I see this bandwagon jumpers who alway claim so so and so didn't fight this guy, when the evidence shows he would have if the promoter was willing to make the fight, I didn't think Mayweather wanted a Margarito fight while he was pursuing De la Hoya to be honest but I would still would have like to see Arum accept Mayweather offer of $10M to fight Cotto and Hatton and $20M to fight Oscar, the rest is now history because Mayweather has now gone on to fight all three names while making triple of the money he asked for in the first place.
Great post.

Arum paid for Margarito to meet Floyd where Floyd was signing autographs at to ask him for a fight. Margarito and Floyd shook hands and everything AFTER Margarito and his translator asked Floyd for a fight. Does that sound like a guy who punked a fighter of Floyd's magnitude?
Arum wanted to make Margarito a star just like the little guys he had in his stable. There was no punking going on. That was Arum's P.R stunt to gain public perception that Floyd was scared of Margarito thinking he could force Floyd into a fight with Margarito on public demand.
Margarito had his chance to become a possible Floyd opponent, and Margarito lost. Floyd had no problem fighting Mexican fighters his whole career until the rumors surfaced that he talked to Dlh about self promotion, and that was leaving Arum.
Now all of a sudden now Floyd is scared of Margarito. Boxing fans know this, Pac and Margarito fans to this day HAVE to say this because Floyd like Marquez created their own legacy without Top Rank. Top Rank chose to back promote Mexican fighters whose styles created action packed fights.
Arum failed at trying to make Margarito a star because Margarito turned out to be a fraud in the end. Sorry, but it is what it is.
Arum was totally at fault. Fighters fight, promoters promote, trainers train, and managers manage.
I agree with you totally. When you get the impression that your promoter is trying to get you beat by an unknown Mexican fighter instead of getting you and putting you in big time ppv fights, and he already had Mexican stars in his stable, then why stay with that promoter?
Marquez left Top Rank also. Nobody cared though. Marquez lost to a fine fighter in Norwood and was pushed to the back burner so that EM and MAB could stay Arum's cash cows. Marquez is an example of a man who can not be held back. The John situation was a situation people-namely Pac fans didn't understand. Marquez felt disrespected by Arum and took the John fight for peanuts. Pac fans said Marquez was scared. What fans didn't know was that Marquez had a burning desire to beat Pac.
Marquez proved his worth and Arum still wouldn't pay him his worth. Did Marquez leave Top Rank? What do you think. I'm not getting at you Ray, just making my point and it just happens to be answering your post.

Fine but Cotto and Hatton were both popular or had more following than Margarito at the time, So a Cotto fight and a Hatton fight would have brought more money to the table, basically Arum was at fault for this fight not happening too.Arum was totally at fault. Arum just didn't think that Floyd could become a big time ppv attraction.

Even though it doesn't look like he ducked Margarito, I just don't believe he was interested in the fight, what I found strange though was how Arum can offer to pay Mayweather $8M to fight Margarito but he couldn't offer to pay Mayweather $10M for a Cotto and Hatton who were more famous and who both brought more money at the time to the table.
Arum just didn't think that Floyd could become a big time ppv attraction.
