HOUSTON — Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum saw the handwriting on the wall Saturday night at the Toyota Center.
It’s time to set up the fight everyone wants to see at super-bantamweight: Nonito Donaire against Cuban lefty Guillermo Rigondeaux, the reigning World Boxing Association titleholder.
Arum said he is now inclined to make this mouth-watering matchup happen with March 2013 as target date.
“We’ll talk with both fighters (Donaire and Rigondeaux) in the new year,” said Arum moments after Donaire scored a savage third-round knockout over Mexican veteran Jorge Arce of Mexico.
Donaire had actually called out Mexican-American Abner Mares, the reigning champion in the World Boxing Council, after easily taking out Arce but it doesn’t look like it will happen soon not only because Mares is being promoted by Golden Boy Promotions.
“Mares has a mandatory (defense against) No. 1 contender Victor Terrazas,” said Arum, whose promotional outfit Top Rank has Terrazas under its banner.
Rigondeaux was supposed to share the spotlight but his Thai opponent--Poonsawat Kratingdaengym--failed a blood test, forcing Top Rank to cancel the bout and leaving the two-time Olympic champion and two-time world amateur king dejected.
Donaire has actually been training his sights on the 32-year-old Rigondeaux, who is unbeaten with 11 fights, including eight stoppages.
“Bring them all on,” said Donaire.
While a Donaire-Mares pairing looks promising, a Donaire-Rigondeaux is much more attractive owing to the explosive styles of the two.
Donaire, whose recent win should bolster his stature in the pound-for-pound rankings, said he’d like to figure in three or four fights in 2013.

This fight has the potential of being Bradley vs. Alexander. Anticlimactic
It happens, sometimes, when the hype builds for too long. There's no telling: letdown, classic...or classic letdown. :lol1:
Until about 6 months ago I gave Rigo a good chance at an upset but there is no way I can bet against Donaire, if anything he wins by KO as Rigo has that Khan styled chin made of fine bone china & glass that makes his legs do all sorts of funny things when it's touched and Nonito will touch it
I think he doesn't like to get hit AT ALL it makes him go into amateur mode but Khans chin is just legendary status you cant compare him to that i think Khan is the best chicken noodle soup dancer in the world period no comparison.

Its gonna be a stinker, Rigo will try to "outbox" Donaire and keep him out of a rhythm but Donaire's too fast and dynamic and Rigo's chin is Khan-esque. I expect Donaire to figure him out at some point and knock him out.
I agree with this. Donaire reads his opponents and adjusts. He has the size and the skills to dissect Rigo. The thing with Rigo is he hasn't really faced anyone yet nearly as good as Donaire. Donaire is a different kind of animal than he's (Rigo) used too. Donaire by a KO.
Hope this fight gets made but arum said there only having talks lets see if Donaire will be interested in this fight
smh
did you even watch the post fight of donaire vs arce? donaire called out both marez AND rigondeaux saying both of them can get it.
How was ramos boring the dude was dropped like 5 times that was fun To watch
You're thinking of another one. The Ramos fight is when they threw about 100 punches together over 6 rounds, then Ramos laid down on a body shot.
Donaire is so quick and good at counter punching that I have a hard time seeing him struggle against a guy that much shorter than him. Rigo just isn't aggressive enough.
Great boxers can still make fight interesting, or very boring, like Floyd Baldomir, or Rigo Cordoba/Ramos.

I favor Donaire slightly but at the same time he doesn't like to get hit to the body and if there's a guy that could make Donaire piss blood is Rigondeaux
great boxers are only boring to some i think it will be interesting
