Say what you want about Cortez but he did a great job by giving Marquez one last chance to get up when he looked like he was done after the 3rd knockdown. A lot of referees would have stopped the fight and nobody would have complained about it. Give credit where credit is due, it was a great call.
I think Marquez was trying to buy some time with the referee since Pacquiao hit him after he went down. As soon as he noticed Cortez was counting anyways, he went back up. See the replay.
Yup, huge credit has to go to Cortez for that.
Just goes to show how close the sport of Boxing always is to a huge change in events.
I mean if Cortez calls the fight off whilst Marquez is on the floor for the 3rd time with both hands over his face who the hell would have complained? That would have been seen as a legit stoppage (not im my own personal opinion but compared to how so many other fights have been stopped for less than that) and forever in the history books it would have been Pacquiao DESTROYED Marquez. Pacquiao KO'd him in the 1st round. Pacquiao is Marquez's daddy. Pacquiao automatically would have been 10 times the fighter Marquez was according to we fickle Boxing fans.
Yet Cortez allows him to continue and here we are today looking forward to a FOURTH fight between the two, when we were a split second away from a Pacquiao KO1 over Marquez, which i highly doubt would have ever meant a 2nd fight between the two never mind 4.
3 fights between the pair which show us just how complicated Boxing really is. I mean if Cortez calls the fight off at that point and Pacquiao gets a KO1 which includes 3 knockdowns, who the **** would have even dreamt of saying that Marquez was a fighter who was more than capable of mixing it up with Pacquiao, nevermind saying that he could beat him. Yet even today so many Boxing fans still look at Boxing as if it's simply written in black and white, if so and so beats someone by an early KO, he's obviously better than him, forgetting the fact that Boxing can change in a split second, one punch can change a fight, one decision by a ref can change the course of Boxing history, one small action that re writes so much of Boxing as we know it.
Looking at it, how many other fights which ended in a quick knockout could have gone onto become great fights if they were given that little bit longer by the ref.... probably quite a few. Everything in Boxing can change in that split second, i guess thats why it's such a great sport.
Great post! Agree with everything you said.

Great FIGHT!!:boxing:
Good call by cortez

No one is complaining about this. What are your point?

Pac should of had a 1 point deduction at the very least for hitting Marquez while he was down. He was lucky not to get a DQ, and if Marquez wasn't such a G he probably would have.
Marquez made a serious mistake as well that could have signaled Cortez to stop it, during the 3rd knock down, Marquez in sheer disappointment purposely lays on his back with both his hands to his face. You definitely gotta give Cortez major credit.
That could have done it alright. Manny Steward was saying "It's over" when he saw Marquez do that.
That's what I'm talking about, that gesture screamed "I don't wanna fight anymore", who would have complained if Cortez had waved the fight off right at that moment?

my stand point of view it created millions it makes pac and jmm a good way
of living. and good for boxing.
but legacy wise pac got it all aside from fighting jmm.
jmm's legacy is only attached to pac giving him a hell of 4 fight.
if jmm never fought pac, fading barrera and some good fights he have in his
road... his career will not bloom.
Agree, alot a refs today automatically stop fights after three knockdowns even though the 3 kd rule isnt in effect. Look at the Banks-Mitchell fight, I thought Cotton could have let the fight go on...
Mitchell was pretty hurt though.
he is still a **** referee.
that first round tho, marquez had that split second where i thought he was gonna quit after suffering that 3rd knock down.
he went down, flat on his back by the ropes, put both hands on his nose/face....but decided to get up.
crazy.
Marquez has no quit in him.
how long you been following boxing? the rope can't keep you up its an automatic knockdown on top of that his gloves were on the canvas for a good 10 seconds the referee doesn't have to step in and drag you to a corner once you opponent is down he is down period.
and its not like many was throwing combination and the whole thing happened quick he had few seconds to think about it obvious foul man and had it been stopped because of it you better believe the commission would be forced to overturn it
Obviously Marquez, his coach and his team didn't complain about it after that round, during the fight and right after the fight. The fact nobody talk about it even the Marquez fans except you a die hard Floyd fan who kept your mouth shut when Floyd weight cheated Marquez. This is a good display of your hypocrisy.

Certainly you didn't know what are you talking about. Watch the fight again. After the punch landed on Marquez, Pacquaio waited for a moment so Cortez could stop him and call it a knock down but it didn't happen. Pacquaio realized Marquez was holding the rope. Come on stop being a floydiot here.

that was super late punch pacquiao had a minute to think about it could have easily been DQ'd for and if the fight would have been stopped at that point there is a very good chance the decision over turned to NC so most likely we would still have had Marquez vs Pacquiao IV

LMAO. After the punch landed on Marquez. He was holding the rope to prevent himself from falling down. The ref didn't call it a knockdown and if Pac didn't punch him again, what do you think will happen next? Let Marquez scapes and Pacquaio should went to his corner right after isn't it?

There was no 3 knockdown rule
That only means it doesn't AUTOMATICALLY end. Most commissions nowadays actually advise refs to stop a fight if a fighter is knocked down 3 times in one round due to medical issues.
Gone are the era's where fighters are allowed to literally die on their shields.

the punch from while he was down I give props to Marquez for not rolling around and try to get him DQ'd
