Obviously more people know who Trout is after this, but would you say Trout gained a ton of new fans from this? I personally didn't come out thinking "Wow, I really want to see more of this guy" any more than I did before. This was a great win and a great name for Trout, but I don't think it was enough for Trout to really emerge as a star.
Stars are made, not born.
It took years and years for Mayweather to become the star he is today. Mainly because he couldn't get the fights that would catapult him to stardom. He was high risk low reward.
Anyone at 154 can become a star. It's just a matter of winning when given the opportunity and having the mouth to promote fights.
True
But I don't think floyd would have so much attention right now if it wasn't for his bad boy imagine..it he had wards or sergios character not many people would know about him I mean people who are not into boxing much.
I know people they don't give a fu** about boxing but they hate mayweathers guts :lol1:
The question of the thread was if this was a star-making performance.
There's no "hatin" because one realize it most likely wasn't.
Trout is a good and relevant fighter. But he's not a star and most likely wont be.
If you believe so, you're being very liberal with the term star. Was Winky Wright a star? He beat a ****load of great fighters.
I don't know what a star making performance looks like but I think he did pretty good against a solid fighter like cotto..it's not easy for a tall guy to fight a short good man..we've seen it with khan..khan has so many advantages but once he gets hit hard he's playing the opponents game instead of staying cool and using his reach and boxing ability.
The star thing I think it all depends how you sell yourself to the crowd..mayweather is the rich "bad guy" people just pay to see him lose..pacquiao is the nice congressman who used to sell donuts in the streets so automatically people will feel for the guy..it's got a lot to do with a fighters persona..there's so many great fighters out there they will never become "stars" because their persona is either boring as hell or they don't like the spot light like some other fighters.

I honestly didn't know anything about him before this fight. But after watching him I came away impressed.
Maybe he isn't going to get a lot of knockouts but so what. He is a slick and classy boxer, very well schooled. If he was European and beat Cotto with that style a lot of posters on here would be slurping his nuts.
Me neither and because of that I thought no way he'd be able to deal with cotto but he boxed very smart and very cool he didn't panic at all..
I see lot's of posters talking about the "star" status...it doesnt matter how well known he is..for us boxing fans it's good to have him around..ward is not that famous either and its not a star like pacquiao or mayweather but them dudes know how to box..looking forward to his next fight..and cotto should move down he didn't look alright last night.
sadly, a star-making performance is not enough... he needs a star-making personality & marketing... he needs to build his brand.
he just seems like a straight forward kind of dude. no BS... no hype...
if a p4p proven fighter like ward is struggling to become a star, i just dont see how trout can do any better....
we can already see with broner how gamesmanship & charisma can DEFINITELY get you followers.
trout deserves the big fights, but the guy needs to get a following.
To become an overnight sensation you need to really beat someone great when there stock is very high and they are at the top of their game. I would not say this win ticks all those boxes. Cotto is still a formidable fighter, but not a p4p type like he was at his best, take into account it's his third weight division, and he has never really been a force at 154. Also he was coming off a loss, even if it was against Floyd. The type of win that would propel Trout into a star, is a Martinez type win.
Even tough Trout does not have a crowd pleasing style, he can become a star like Winky did for a while, but it will have to be longevity, and great wins like Winky eventually got.
Personally I don't see that kind of talent. Winky dominated a close to prime Mosley, Tito, etc. Trout is not that good, and this win is not on that level.
No, this fight was more about what Cotto had left than what Trout actually did in the fight. Trout has some nice boxing skills, but he is so slow that it's ridiculous. I don't think I have ever seen a fighter that slow before. Trout had many physical advantages over Cotto and he started using them in the second half of the fight. Does Trout have knockout power? He will be able to frustrate some dudes with his slippery style and he is good at avoiding shots. I don't know how far he will go, though. I think 154 is a weak division, or at least not a crowd pleasing division.
Boxing is in a rough spot when it comes to finding exciting fighters on the elite levels at this point in time which may start to hurt the sport. When it comes to truly exciting fighters who are in, lets say the top 25 p4p, how many are there really? Boxing lost two of its biggest and most exciting draws in two weeks time (obviously Hatton is nowhere near elite) and both were beat by boring technical, defensive minded fighters. Sergio is damn near 40 and will be finished after another fight or two, as will Floyd and Manny and Froch and Marquez. Boxing is turning over again and I hope we can get some more entertaining fighters to put asses in the seats. I'm going to say something I never thought I would say, but thank God for Broner. Ward is the best fighter in the world, but he will never be a ppv draw. Things will be interesting over the next couple of years to say the least. Maybe not in a good way.
I feel like we're talking about Bradley after the Pacquiao fight with the comments I'm reading. Trout won and deserved the victory. If they have a rematch, I think Trout would beat him even more convincingly than he did the first time.
I hope so for Trout's sake, but I doubt it. It was a very boring a sloppy fight from both guys. Nothing that makes me excited to really see Trout again, but who knows?
It's miles away from a star-making performance. He's nowhere near Canelo's skill level. He was given Cotto for a dominating win, but he didn't deliver even with all his advantages. He was on survival mode from the very first round and didn't have the mental capability to stop Cotto. He has a long way to go. He should be awarded Lara, and both would give the audience a boring sleep fest.
I see lots of haters on here.I thought cotto would send this guy into retirement..boy was I wrong..this kid is a good smart boxer. who knows how to use his reach ..respect.

nope. the only way he matters is if he keeps winning. the masses don't like technical, defensive fighters without a ko punch
He definitely got more fans of this but I don't know about Star making performance. If he keeps it up like this he will definitely be a bigger name though

Was this a star making performance? Will people still not give a damn about Trout? | BoxingScene Community
