I had a couple of mates round last night and one of them said "Americans area great boxers, but they are always boring, check out Hopkins, Mayweather, Ward, all can fight, but all are hardly entertaining inside the ring"
I said there is the likes of Kirkland and Broner who seem to be good value entertainment for casual and hardcore fans.
Who do you guys think is the most exciting American fighter (beside Mexican-Americans) and do you agree with my mates statement that Americans whilst good fighters are boring inside the ring?
It depends on what one likes to see.
For many fans observing more subtle skills is exciting. Footwork, angles, strategies, defense.
KO's are spectacular, but as somebody said in another thread, Boxing is the art of hit without getting hit, not the art of hit and get hit :D
I'm not American, and I don't find Mayweather, to just name one, boring. On the contrary, his display (sometimes even show-off ) of skills is all but boring IMO.
I don't want to only see 1st round KO's.
Immigrants have it real tough in the States but as soon as they're successful at a sport they are as American as apple pie. I bet if Ussain Bolt showed any interest he'd baptized "Jamaican-American" in an instant.
Andre Ward vs Chad Dawson, Adrien Broner vs Antonio DeMarco, Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Miguel Cotto were all recent fights of this year and they were all exciting.
For me, its Broner all the way. Boring has a lot to do with match making. Saying one country has more boring fighters than the other is wrong. That's just hating.
Brian Viloria
Gary Russell Jr.
Adrien Broner
Lamont Peterson
Danny Garcia
Kendall Holt
Carson Jones
Andre Berto
Keith Thurman
James Kirkland
Demetrius Andrade
Edwin Rodriguez (Dominican-American)
Peter Quillin
Kelly Pavlik
Tavoris Cloud
Steve Cunningham
Seth Mitchell
That's after a quick scan of BoxRec omitting Mexican-Americans.
only the bold fighters are really exciting to me, lol, the rest are just maybes cause they can stink up a fight
When will Mexican-Americans be considered Americans? This thread just proves how a lot of people outside of America don't consider them American. What makes Mexican-Americans any less American than African-Americans? Unless you don't consider anyone American, since our nation isn't that old to begin with. If you're born on American soil, you're American.
It's upsetting to think that majority of people around the world consider Mexican-Americans 2nd rate citizens. They will never classify them as Americans.
I agree with this. It's the same as it used to be with Italian Americans and Jewish Americans. Now they are just white people and that's just for a descriptor.
Lamont Peterson can be exciting... When he gets knocked down, or hurt, he goes into this robot/zombie mode, and he just walks forward and throws punches... He did it to Bradley (but to no avail), he did it to Ortiz (to earn a draw after 2 knockdowns Marquez), and he did it to Khan (To win*)
? Jimmy Saville & Gary Glitter up your sh1tter.

Mexican-Americans are exactly that in my book, Mexican genetics, American culture, but equally American as they are Mexican.
There has been so many amazing and entertaining American fighters over the years that boxing would be a dull place if the Yanks hadnt been involved. My mate is much more of a casual fan, but that was his impression, that Americans are down right boring entertainment yet still great technicians and boxers

I indirectly take cheapshots at all fighters.:spankme::spankme: Just seems to me most people don't want to consider MA's, American. It makes me wonder what it was like to be an Italian in America 100 years ago, or of Irish decent.
I can't really buy the fighting style thing then. Unless American boxing is strictly looked at as African Americans and the "slick" ones. Plenty of Americans fight toe to toe. Pavlik, Garcia, and Cloud all aren't slick. Too many people associate American boxing with Mayweather. Even the best fighter in America isn't really "slick" and would probably rather bang(ward).
but you mostly seem to say indirects towards mexican american fighters for a rivalry reason or maybe envy or jealosy or hate , lol, i dont know, lol, i never seen you cheap shot african americans or white americans but i have seen you throw indirects at ricans too, im not accusing you of rascism like larryx or burner would accuse others but youre incapable of not showing biassness when it comes to some people or fighters
Mexican-American is as legit an identity as being Mexican or American. It's just imaginary lines at the end of the day.
Matthew Macklin was born to Irish parents in Birmingham, so in the UK he'd probably have been called Irish in school, and when he came over to Ireland for the summers he'd have been thought of as English.
I don't know what it's like for Mexican-Americans but I imagine they have to deal with the same stuff.
