What do you say to the fact that Louis was staggered and knocked down by this man below, then no.1 contender Tony Galento? Why do you think Galento could get to him but not Wlad? I don't understand how people can think some of these ATGs would walk through Wlad when they struggled with men like the below.
from boxrec: Louis was staggered in round one and Galento was dropped in the second round. Louis was knocked down in third round.

Joe Louis was great for his time, but he'd have a hell of a time trying to hit someone as big and defensive as Wlad. I think Louis was a much sharper puncher than Wlad, but the style Wlad brings, I think, would give Louis too many problems.
it'd be perfect for Louis, who was quantum precise coming forward, whilst Wlad tends to plod away in retreat whilst trying to land on small opponents with inferior chins, waiting till their appalling fitness leaves them open. But Louis has superior chin, unflappable stamina and great recovery, and unaffected by Wlad tactics he will pick up points all night against Wlad. Wlads best chance is to fight behind the inconsequential jab of his. By contrast, Wlad has proven track record of terrible recovery from precise lethal blows such as those Joe delivers all night.
Might even be a stoppage for Joe.

Here you go bud:
I don't think this was necessary due to punches Wlad took. Similar for the Brewster fight.. I think Wlad had a problem with stamina. In both fights he was dominating and then just gassed out. Brewster actually said the same in one of the interviews. It doesn't have much with the Wlad's skills or the quality of Wlad's chin, he just lost all the energy and was unable to continue. He wasn't really TKOed in Brewster fight, he just collapsed and don't pretend you don't know what happened after that.
Present Wlad is all the opposite - he can go 12 rounds high tempo without problems.
you cant judge a fighter based on their worst nights, that should be obvious. especially in the HW division when anything can happen not to mention a fight where the critisized fighter comes back to win.
louis and wlad both got rocked by less than stellar competition, they arent the only ones. anything can happen in this sport, thats part of what makes it so great.
i wont get into who would win between wlad and louis bcuz frankly this thread aint worth it but ill say this much.. any fighter who goes in there hoping for the worst version of their opponent to show up is likely to take a beating. be it louis or wlad.
Why do some people act like Joe Louis was some sort of midget who would be out of place against todays fighters? He was the same size as Lamon Brewster. He was the same height as Chris Byrd but with a slightly longer reach. He is just 2 cms shorter than David Haye and his reach was just 5 CM's less than Haye. He's not Sam Langford for Gods sake!
Dont forget his height and reach would have improved had he had the benefit of good nutrition from an early age... I dont know much about his life but the fact that he was black and grew up in the inter-war period means he was probably not all that well fed.

What Wlad would have looked like in 1940 without modern weight training and sports science techniques...

Different eras...
edit: oh and he'd be a good few inches shorter too...
Wlad was knocked out in 2 rounds by Sanders, a non HOF'er. He was also knocked out by Lamon Brewster, a pretty average fighter.
These are the types of threads that make people crap on Wlad. Can't he just be great in his own era? why sh*t on other fighters from other different eras of boxing.
Brewster is an olympic medalist and became world champion in the pros. Brewster would beat Galento without getting staggered or knocked down by him. so take your wisdom some place else. Corrie Sanders would beat Galento also.

yeah I like wlad, he's easily the best in the world right now, but his fanboys suck. When they start trying to claim he's the greatest fighter since achilles or whatever and start discrediting and slagging ATG's it makes me feel like slagging off wlad in turn ... you know by saying Corrie Sanders owned his ass and Ross Puritty b1tch slapped him or whatever ...
Hold on now, that fat hairy man had "old school toughness" something that wlad could only get if he took some black and white photos of himself with a cigar and beer in his hand.
Nevermind that Wlad has 40-50 pounds of lean mass on Louis and that Louis was stopped by 192 pound schmeling.
Oh and that brewster and sanders were larger men than louis that doesnt matter either because louis also had old school toughness. But sanders with his belly and chin had real good old school toughness himself.
I don't see what mass has to do with it. Louis is a better puncher than Wlad and has destroyed large opponents. Plus in the heavies, weight differences are not as big of a factor compared to the lower weights.
Schmeling is nothing like Wlad and that was not a prime Louis. Do you forget the rematch? You bring up Brewster and Sanders, I don't know why. Louis lost to Schmeling, Wlad lost to Brewster and Sanders. Difference is that Schmeling is a hall of famer who go destroyed in the 1st in the rematch.

Yes. Louis punches better than Wlad, is faster, more skilled, more experienced against better opposition, has more killer instinct, better stamina. Louis would have to be favored to win.
I though you've been banned from discussing boxing with me? Please go away.
You've just been banned from talking any boxing with me. GTFO NOW!!!!!
A cruiserweight is going to beat a SHW that fights behind his jab, and doesn't make silly mistakes???

I do for one.
I really can't see how you think the others beat Klitschko but Louis can't. He is arguably better offensively overall than all of them and more skilled.

It was a flash knockdown. Wlad knocked out Pannell in the second round.
Kind of like Wepner's knockdown of Ali.
Cooper's knockdown of Ali was no flash knockdown, he was saved by the bell.
you still going on about that nonsense?
Wepner TRIPPED Ali and Cooper managed to get a lucky shot in. Ali got up at the count of 2 or 3 and went on to TKO him in the next round.
Wlad has been down at least THIRTEEN TIMES in his pathetic career.
Ross Puritty (a fuking true JOURNEY MAN with 20 losses on his resume) dropped him 1 time and TKOed him
Sanders gave him the beating of his life and knocked him down 4 times to win via TKO
Barrett had him out 1 time
Brewster had him down 2 times and Wlad went into labor in his corner after the fight and got TKOed
Williamson 1 time
Parnell made him do a 180 face plant
Sam Peter knocked him down 3 times
Wach would've gotten the knock down if Wlad wasn't saved by the ropes and the bell
And none of these guys are monster punchers with the exception of maybe Sam Peter
Ali took on Foreman, Lyle, Shavers, Bonavena and other huge hitters and never went down.
Louis would fk him up like he did to Carnera ... Wlad is the biggest fraud in boxing today
Both *****kos have been ducking old ass James Toney for over 8 years now
Body types are deceiving, just because you can bench 400lbs doesnt make you a great fighter, or puncher.
Sam Peter got absolutely SCHOOLED by James Toney just 1 year after knocking down Wlad 3x and giving Wlad one of his toughest fights ever.
A blown up 39 year old 5'9 230lb MW, with a damaged pituitary gland, brain damaged as well the guy slurs most of his words, grossly out of shape beat a guy who Wlad nearly lost against. The sad thing is that Peter is also one of Wlad's top 5 wins.

There is no way a guy as skinny as this could beat a guy like this!

this is a great argument. its not as if it ever happened to wlad or anything. "peeleft:
the fact is, there really is no way of knowing. louis is the 2nd greatest ever, and while wlad hasn't had the luxury of having great fighters to compete against, stylistically, he is a problem for the best ever in that division.
