Hagler, SRL, Greb, Ketchel & Monzon without even thinking about it.
I'm sure there are several others that would've beaten Jones Jr at middleweight too.
Why does everybody here put Jones in matchups at 154? He fought like, 4 times at that weight when he just started out.. He's never been rated as a JMW.
prime Hagler, prime mccallum, prime toney.
He beat a prime Toney!? So what he struggled to make weight for the fight that was his lazy ass problem, so many other fighters were in similar situations and never *****ed about it so much! He still rehydrated and outweighed Jones fight night. He was very talented, he just wasn't quick enough for Jones, simple as!
Toney wasn't good at "packing on pounds of muscle". He actually packed on pounds of fat. If it had been muscle he'd never have been able to take off that much.in 10 weeks.
guess you missed the sarcasm
A prime Hagler beats the brakes off of Roy. People remember the Hagler that fought Hearns and Leonard. He was not in his prime at that point even though they were both great fights. A prime Hagler was on his toes and was an excellent boxer that had power in both hands, good defense, and a granite chin. He was an excellent fundamental fighter and southpaw. That spells disaster for even a prime Roy. I think a prime Gerald McClellan, a prime James Toney, and a prime Mike McCallum would beat Roy.
Roy was a great performer in the ring, maybe the greatest performer ever to put on boxing gloves. But, I have never seen him beat any A class fighter in their prime. If you go back and watch Toney and McCallum at 160 in their prime, its unbelievable to watch the level of pure boxing skills they brought to the table. They had the basic fundamentals down to an art. That would just be too much for a guy like Roy who strictly depended on his physical ability. Those guys were throwback fighters and very dangerous when at their best. Roy's chin would definitely gotten tested if he had faced them at their best. They were smart fighters that could break you down. Roy is the type of fighter that usually dominates a fight from beginning to end. He's never really had to make adjustments in the middle of a fight. And how can you truthfully adjust if you are not disciplined with the fundamentals? He would be forced to adjust against those guys and I think he would be unsuccessful.
Okay hold on James toney has had the same damn style and good fundamentals his whole career ecspecially @ 160-168 so how is it that his skill was that much better at 160 then @ 168 with more exp?
And wtf great boxing skill are you talking about with the g man his power was his equalizer for everything his boxing Iq was not that great. His only shot would have been to knock Roy out if he couldn't do that and Roy caused him problem it woulda been tough **** for him.
The only one I'll give you is McCallum because of some of the problems he gave Roy and that I haven't seen to much of him. But his best days were 154 and 160 so anything 168 and above isn't gonna work well for him.
They were BOTH having weight problems? no?
Their performance suffered because of having to make weight? no?
YES their situation are similar in a way..
LET it GO, RJJ didnt beat the best/prime version of TONEY and it WAS toney's fault.
So when your weight drained all of the sudden as you insist he was although it was the same every fight your not prime anymore?
He fought the best toney beat his ass accept that.
dude do your homework man...james toney was the top dog in boxing in 1994 @ 168 lbs and roy jones took it all...
its real simple man...jones just had james toney's number....didn't matter who toney had just beat prior...could've been after the barkley or the nunn fight, or the mcallum fight...same result...james always had to come down 30 or 40 lbs prior to a fight...
Roy doesn't beat Toney nor McCallum when they fought each other the 1st time.
The only one i can say %100 sure beats RJJ is the great Carlos Monzon. Granite chin, brutal power and slow but incredibly precise with his punches. Nobody could evade Monzon right.

Had this discussion at work....good times. At his peak he was the nicest IMO. Anyway who would you guys pick to beat him at 160lb?
No one would have beat him. He was that good.
James Toney packed on pounds of muscle jumped up two weight divisions, fought, then came back down two weight divisions and fought Roy?
Oh thats right... Its nothing like it.
Toney wasn't good at "packing on pounds of muscle". He actually packed on pounds of fat. If it had been muscle he'd never have been able to take off that much.in 10 weeks.
Hagler got outboxed by a smaller SRL,Roy outboxes him and hurts him a couple of times
correction, a past-prime hagler was outboxed by srl...he most definitely was never hurt in the fight, and sugar ray leonard, for all his boxing and showboating/shoeshining, never tried to press the action and go for a ko on hagler...hearns did well boxing a slightly past prime hagler for a short spell, and legitly rocked his bell, but still wound up looking up at the lights...prime hagler ain't no shoe-in for roy jones lets get that straight...
Hagler got outboxed by a smaller SRL,Roy outboxes him and hurts him a couple of times
The Hagler SRL fought was nowhere near his best and SRL didn't outbox him.

YES their situation are similar in a way..
LET it GO, RJJ didnt beat the best/prime version of TONEY and it WAS toney's fault.
packing on fat is not the same as packing on muscle and losing it...losing fat is healthy..losing muscle isnt
RJJ getting overrated a bit too much. LOL.
Hagler and prime Mccallum wouldve defeated a prime RJJ at middleweight. A prime in shape toney as well.
Hagler got outboxed by a smaller SRL,Roy outboxes him and hurts him a couple of times
If you think RJJ beat a prime focus toney that night you need to wake up and apologize to lights out toney :boxing:
naw james should be paying the fans back for that one, if he didn't realize that jones jr., was a bigger threat than he thought he was, that he couldn't get away with the slack training and be at his best against a fighter that was on everybody's radar...the excuses man i tell ya...lol
If he fought the 1st Mccallum version toney RJJ wouldve loss. true story.
lol...he fought an even better version of jame toney...the one who took the lessons he learned fighting mccallum, and wiped the floor with iran barkley...
dude give it up man...
LOL. Hell to the NO. he couldnt even dominate an out of shape James Toney.
If he fought the 1st Mccallum version toney RJJ wouldve loss. true story.
lmmfao...sure man....
dude you killing me right now and i'm not the biggest rj fan ask reed...
