What has Sergio Martinez really done to impress all of you so much?

how ironic is it that a rigondeaux fan made this thread? well, Guillermo has several gold-medals, and only gold-medals from amateurs, Martinez doesn't even have amateur career. Martinez is just a media champ, that's all.

Let's start from early in his career to answer your question. I will do it in bullet points so as to make it easy for you understand. >Martinez started boxing when he was 20 years. >Whilst he was winning world titles he was also working 2, sometimes 3 other jobs. >His only real loss came to Margarito 12 years ago. He hasn't really lost since. Most of his early wins came whilst working at least 4 other jobs. >He dominated Kermit Cintron at 154 and TKO him but the fight was resumed after a 10 minute break because he claimed it was a head butt. >He knocked out cold one of the most avoided fighters in the history of boxing, Paul Williams. Williams had never been knocked out before. He had also honestly won the first fight. >He disfigured Kelly Pavlik's face. Made him look average at best. >He knocked down Dzinziruk 5 times in 8 rounds. Dzinziruk had never been knocked down or knocked out before. As Jim Lampley stated "It is impossible to look good against Dzinziruk. Martinez looked sensational." >Darren Barker had never lost before. Martinez knocked him out. >Dominated/Schooled Chavez Jr who was without a doubt 25+ pounds heavier than him on fight night. Technically a Cruiserweight. That is the equivalent of Mayweather fighting an Andre Ward if not heavier fighter. >Got knocked down by this guy who was 25+ pounds heavier and came back punching. Not clinching, but punching. Need I say more?

He hasn't beaten any of the 'real' top 7-8 guys, out of Junior, who is a fraud. Just check it out from boxrec if you don't believe me. He hasn't fought Geale, Quillin, Golovkin, Sturm, Pirog. Yet he is calling out the smaller money-stars such as Mayweather, like he would all of a sudden somehow deserve that fight after beating Junior. No offence to the fans of these guys: Williams, Pavlik, Macklin, but they are not that good fighters. You should be banned for stupidity

Outboxing and outfighting Pavlik at 160 was very impressive, he's the only one to beat him at MW. His first fight with Williams, he only took on short notice and lost a very close and debatable decision. The rematch, he annihilated Williams in a way nobody had done. Say what you want about Chavez Jr., but he beats more than a few top 10 MW based on his size, strength, and determination. Martinez not only wins, but he mystifies opponents with his unusual blend of movement and power punching. Dude ducks no one. He deserves his place in P4P rankings.

Only difference is, Martinez is at least fighting title holders and/or Champions. Something Pac isn't even doing in the weight class he's actually fighting in. What's the last guy Pac fought that never won a belt, like Macklin? How about the last Pac opponent that's never ranked top 10 in any division, like Barker?

If he would have learned english since the beggining of his career, I bet 100% he would out sell and have a high rating then Mayweather Or Pacquaio. Yep, He has the entertaining style, looks, charisma, charm. I always said he should have learned english. I can see that guy being the biggest star in america. He looks like a super model. I remember they even put him on tmz, and ragged on him for not speaking english. If he could, they would have him on there all the time. The kid is a star.

This pertains mostly to the little pactarts who have this agenda towards Martinez. Which I find a bit ironic because Martinez is dominating everyone put in front of him, not to mention fighting/dominating guys bigger than him. Only difference is, Martinez is at least fighting title holders and/or Champions. Something Pac isn't even doing in the weight class he's actually fighting in. You don't have to like Martinez, but there is a reason he is top P4P (#2 on my list, right below Ward).

I'm not criticizing Martinez, and I think he is a good champion, but what impressive victories does he have that has caused so many people to rate him so high. I know the Williams knockout was impressive, his win against Kelly Pavlik was ok I guess. But what else, what I'm I missing? He counted the stripes of a zebra. Also, he recycles.

You know you made it in boxing when you get the Mayweather treatment. With that said, Pactarts are still angry at Sergio because Pac said no to his own demands towards him. Pac set all the road blocks and then turned down his own damn offer! :dunce: Not to mention that ANY Chavez Jr die hard fan would tell you that Martinez just beat the living sh*t out of the best fighter ever to lace them up.... Pavlik is a bit arse but I think it was more the way Sergio stepped up in his first fight at 160 against a much bigger man who was lineal champ and beat the piss out of him in the final few rounds of the fight when it was quite even at the middle. It was the performance/achievement more than the actual win over Pavlik.

Not much I can say here... The fact is that Sergio was the underdog leading to the fight; going up in weight to fight the middleweight lineal champ. It's not his fault that some clairvoyant from NSB knew all along that it was a mismatch, so I don't see how it takes away from his accomplishment. Sergio is a giant killer. Beating bigger guys by KO at 154 and 160. Just beat the snot out of a cruiser. Cintron, PWill, Pavlik, Chavez all victims. I would say that beating Macklin and Barker by KO is just as valid as beating Sturm or Geale since they were all so competitive with Sturm. Great combos, great movement, killer instinct, one punch ko power, awkward southpaw, exciting fights, not afraid to mix it up. Why shouldn't he be ranked so high? He has used these tools against top level guys, its not like he just displayed this in one fight.
