I'm trying to convince a local sports station they should devote some of their time covering boxing. The program director is keen on the idea but wants to know how to connect boxing to the region. While the biggest reason would be that we have a lot of boxing fans here in Houston and in Texas in general (which is why promoters come here so often), I also want to be sure they know all the Houston based boxing people there are. So far, I have this list.
Ronnie Shields group:
Erislandy Lara
Jermall Charlo
Jermell Charlo
Brian Vera
Edwin Rodriguez
Mike Lee
Danny O'connor
Sergei Liakhovich
Kenny Weldon:
I know he has a big amateur gym here but does anyone know if he trains any pros now?
George Foremen III is a boxer down here. Plus, I know there are several local pro shows that happen all throughout the year from SouthCoast Promotions, Savarese Promotions, etc.
Marlen Esparza, the US Olympic Bronze Medalist, trains and fights in Houston.
What else?
James Prince, who is also based here is a manager of several different fighters including Andre Ward, Chad Dawson, Shane Mosely and others. He also has a gym here. Hey KMCC505, give me a call. 713-702-6130. I'd like to here more about this situation. I too believe boxing should be bigger then what it is here.
Marlen Esparza trains out of Houston and her trainer has some stand out amateurs and 4 undefeated pro prospects that look really promising along with ex champion Reggie Johnson who's been working on his comeback
