I think he was always great but like everyone it took a little time for him to get the experience and he started late. He only came to the US 5 years ago with the exception of the Margarito fight early in his career so it took a while for people to get to know him here and the opportunities to fight better know fighters...so it's only recent that he's been getting his due. His pre-boxing background in soccer and as a pro cyclist gave him the disciple and stamina for endurance and speed training which is what makes him so great and gives him such an advantage over most. He's only starting to make money now at a later age like it was for Bernard Hopkins...which kept him motivated instead of complacent...so yeah his coming into his own now and it's great to watch.
His fights against Richard Williams were some of my favorites, watch I and II,
Dude is a beast......haters will hate and speculate.........Martinez will win. :boxing:
Besides him being the better fighter/athlete, I'd say his advantage at 160 is being a quicker, smaller fight with incredible stamina fighting against guys killing themselves just be able to fight at 160, leaving them sluggish and lacking endurance. They have the strength of a smw/cw but they can't keep up with the old man.
Hell Macklin has fought better fighters then Pirog and Golovkin combined
Who??? Felix Sturm??? all kknow that Golovkin and Pirog are better than Macklin, and both have belts at the time. And Pirog offered him 3 millons to fight him and a unification
euro bums & a mexcian hype job? That'll do the trick every time.
Hopkins faced a lot of bums at middleweight as well. Martinez (like Hopkins) is calling out WWs too.
:slap: hahahahahah lol Thats true!!
he's a greasy fast southpaw with some pop to go with all of that shine.
he's tough, too. he showed that in the chavez jr fight, the first williams go, a few rounds with pavlik, a rough patch or two against macklin and barker, etc.
He has a HUGE Athletic Advantage over most of the top fighters at 160 so it has been fairly easy for him because he has yet to fight a fighter who has just as much speed or more so he can get away with a lot when fighting guys like Chavez Jr, Kelly Pavlik, Macklin and Barker...neither is overly fast and neither has great footwork to keep up with someone like Martinez
This right here! :boxing::boxing:
since he started late.... he's probably reaching his absolute boxing prime. His Boxing IQ has never been higher than it is right now. Even if his body was slowing down. His boxing IQ was growing.
sometimes when fighters become champs they start fighting better.... becoming a champion isn't just obtaining a title to some fighters. It makes them want to live up to it.
Only difference is he sits on his punches more at 160, other than that no difference at all.
Wrong his been fightig dudes that either cant match his speed or dont have good timming
I say he is a better 154 pounder. He is a natural 154 and a small 160. If he had the same weight naturality against his opponents in 160 he would demolish them faster. I think that can happen in 154 but nobody wants to fight him.
probably because he fight against Barker and Macklin, and not Pirog and Golovkin
