(UPDATE: Someone told me that JESUS GONZALEZ is reported to be the last man to beat Andre Ward...but I have read that he beat him in 1996...this fight with Revish, however, was in 1998...Ill check and see if anyone knows for sure, 100 proof positive)
SECOND UPDATE 9-26-12 8PM: UPDATE: Apparently Virgil Hunter says Jesus Gonzalez was the last one to beat Andre Ward as an amateur....so Ill assume that Revish was the second to last ....sorry for the mistake...
I've had this in my files for 14 years...this is the kind of stuff you see and the kind of people you see at amateur tournaments...February 7, 1998 at Lenexa, Kansas, National Silver Gloves tournament...The last time Andre Ward ever lost was at 132 pounds Intermediate JO to John Revish (it's off to the left, about halfway down on the page)....notice that Chad Dawson lost in the finals the same day, at 132 senior JO to Julio Perez (I was in his corner)...other kids who fought on this day include Nonito Donaire, Raushee Warren, Gary Russel (Warren and Russel are on the back side of this paper), Allen and Jason Litzau, Timothy Bradley and Curtis Stevens...my boxer Sammy Vega, pictured on the bottom right, won the national title at 106 senior JO...

Hey John. What did you make of Chad calling himself a throwback fighter before the fight? I only ask as I talked to Naazim and he had a lot to say on the matter and just wanted to get your view on it.
I agree with you. But, last minute weight loss? I'm confused, you guys had a pretty lengthy camp, right? Was the weight not coming off through the whole camp, and then you had to quickly cut weight off days before the weigh in? Or?...And, I agree that most fighters rarely go into a fight 100%, for example Ward fought Froch with an injured left hand and hurt it more so in the middle of the fight. At this level, with lengthy intense training camps, injuries minor and severe alike happen and you have to handle them.
we could only dream and wish it were so simple, u know?
Ill say this, fighting under circumstances such as last minute weight loss, etc is EXTREMELY difficult to perform under...it can be as if your brain and muscles have NO connection to each other and it doesnt matter what u want to do, its what ur body will allow you to do. It happens often in boxing, definitely. Things happen before fights and they go a long ways toward dictating how the fight physically plays out. In my experience most fighters go into fights not perfectly readyI agree with you. But, last minute weight loss? I'm confused, you guys had a pretty lengthy camp, right? It was shocking to me seeing Dawson get hurt by a naturally smaller guy and that was when I knew the weight played a massive part in the outcome of this fight. Ward is a solid puncher, but you have to look at the guys Dawson has been in with and say that if he was fighting healthy, Ward's power wouldn't have had that much of an effect and Dawson could have fought on a more even keel.
All game plans go out the window when a normally solid, but unspectacular puncher is hurting the naturally bigger man. It's a big adjustment to make let alone the fact that Dawson looked like he was out of gas fairly early on - again a symptom of the weight loss. I think Ward beats Dawson at any weight, but no way is Ward whitewashing him like he did if Dawson comes into the ring at 90-95%.
Maybe the fairest assessment Ive seen yet...

IceMan, what do you feel was Chad's biggest mistake in that fight with Ward?..did he underestimate Ward's punching power coming in to the fight?
I think...Ill tell u something...boxing can be a crazy game sometimes..Ward is the type of guy, u see them every once in a while, when u watch him he doesnt do things that are OBVIOUSLY great, his skills dont really jump out at you like a Roy Jones or a Ray Leonard, etc...he's subtle and effective and consistent...we kept saying before the fight, dont underestimate this guy and I dont think Chad did that...but by the same token I think Ward is the type of guy you'd have to be in the ring with him to fully appreciate him...like, by a smaller comparison, I remember boxing a couple guys back in the day and when I watched them I didnt see power, speed, etc...but then u get in with them and its like WOW, this guy is MUCH more than he appears to be on the surface...Chad said on TV that Ward was much faster than he looked on TV and that's a huge thing to a boxer because the difference in speed that you are used to can cause major troubles...if you're used to hitting off a 80 MPH fastball thrower and then u get in with a 102 MPH guy, u may never get used to him and even if u do it certainly wont be right away...and, again, NO EXCUSES, just reality/facts, losing weight in a fashion that u didnt expect to have to can magnify those differences in a huge way...Ward doesnt exactly need help to win fights so/but if u give him added advantages its like a no win situation...
wel lif he was it's not like miranda can't punch
Pascal might not be an easy fight either. When do you think he might want to go for that?
I guess him and Cloud both have fights coming up? I guess we gotta' see how that plays out first but I would assume that HBO would look for these fights ASAP? We will see soon, I guess....
Yo Ice during training i heard Chad was getting beat up in sparring and got dropped hard by Miranda...can you speak on this??if not i understand
wel lif he was it's not like miranda can't punch
Cant argue with that at all...if there is a rematch we have to build up to it in a big way...

I also think Dawson beats Pascal in a rematch. The stoppage was BS IMO and Chad was on his way to a W.
I DEFINITELY thought so, too...Pascal fought a very good fight and did what he had to do, ALL credit to him...but I truly believe he wasnt getting out of that round...
Chad let me down in that fight. First time I watched him he made me a fan. Then I gathered some people up to watch Dawson-Pascal and he made me look bad :lol1:. But now that I think about it every time I gather people up to watch some of my fighters they tend to disappoint for whatever reason. Maybe I should stop doing that.
I have my doubts that Pascal makes it past Cloud tho. He's been inactive way too long. I don't think he's dedicated to the game.

If a guy I train gets hit by a car a week before the fight but is still going through with it, if u ask me, Im still gonna tell u he feels spectacular...

I knew somebody was gonna mention Pascal....I know I'm not the only one who thinks Chad didn't show up that night and STILL almost got him outta there...Chad on tilt would ice that dude bro....IDK man, Ward vs Chad @ 175 is a different fight imo...a whole different scrap...I would love to see it....if it's the same outcome, I would be shocked...thats just me bro!!

I think its too early for a rematch with 175. I'd rather see Dawson avenge the loss to Jean Pascal before going after Ward again. Ward is moving up in weight and Dawson is king at 175 so its natural that the two will cross paths again down the road.
