at times. every fight he makes a fighter out to be superman. one of his most repeated lines " wow thats like straight out of a movie!" all he does is hype boring fights. he sucks at commentating. perfect commentators for mma would be kenny Florian, randy couture, and the mike chavello.
I would much rather listen to Rogan hyping a fighter up like that than listening to HBO crew bashing Timothy Bradley into oblivion and constantly down playing every action he does. Every single broadcast has been biased as ever and its hard listening to negative crap over and over again.
Tarver with showtime's crew is the best.
Kellerman is the worst and just annoying. Lampley is pretty annoying at times too though. Merchant is terrible at what he does but is funny sometimes with his stupid senile quotes that make no sense.
joe rogan has never fought competitively at a high level in his life. his biggest claim is tkd and that is nothing but point matches. ufc is dying. joe rogan is just a pot head fa.g.
joe rogan is a black belt in jiu-jitsu under Eddie Bravo, green belt in Judo, 2nd degree black belt in Taekwondo. he can be pretty biased at times towards jiu-jitsu fighters but overall his commentating is ok.
I never knew Roy was even aware of the whole thing. I've been thinking and saying for years he is by far the most optimistic of the group and, even though I would like to see him more, he is perfect for BAD.
Lampley still shows hints of his old optimism when he's surrounded by Max and Roy. He used to be great at presenting boxing in the most noob friendly manner as possible while still towing the line and playing the role of objective reporter, which he does well. He's kinda getting better lately, but he I think he still comes across as a bit jaded and he speaks like most of the cynics that pervade boxing's fanbase.
There's nothing unique about being a boxing cynic... I enjoy watching people who enjoy being at the fights and seems like Roy usually is the only one.
Ironically, I was about to make a similar thread a week ago.
Roy is right and if you think about any negative remark or knock on a fighter, it originated from a commentator.
I understand that fighters talk down on their opponent but after the fight they give that fighter respect.
However after, and even during the fight commentators like Lampley (main culprit) Merchant and Kellerman do their best to put an asterisk on a fighters win and in turn fans parrot a lot of these ridiculous statements and ideas.
If you ever paid attention, then you would see a huge contrast between guys like Foreman, Lewis and Roy when they called fights as they actually know what it takes to compete and get in the ring.
Even in a loss they can point out what a fighter can do to improve himself and help himself next fight and this in turn makes fans what to see the fighter again.
I'm sure most casual fans listening to HBO guys, not only wouldn't want to see the loser (as he is a bum/overrated) but the champ as well because HBO probably painted the picture that he cherry picked/fought a shot fighter/ fought a guy who was overrated to begin with.
Dana white would never allow that, and that is why UFC is as popular as it is and why most people don't take boxing that serious. It also doesn't hurt the UFC that Joe Rogan is actually a decorated former competitive fighter. He has two black belts in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, a 2nd degree black belt in taekwondo, and a green belt in judo.
Roy is terrible when it comes to commentary. Listen to him on Jim Lampleys last episode. He rants about how Chavez comes into the rematch with Sergio with all of the confidence and that Sergio may not be able to beat Chavez again. At least Roy didn't mention God for five minutes like usual. Get me Tarver or Foreman. Sure, Big George comes off like he has never stepped into a ring in his life, but at least he is likeable while doing it. Roy just comes off like an ass.
Nah, Atlas, although he loves to hear himself talk is one of my favorite commentators. I'm surprised Roy brought this up though, he's right though.
At this point I'm not liking Max or Steward. By the way I've only now entered the 4th season of The Wire, I know I'm late but I'm definitely feeling the show.
I hear ya. Max isn't the best but he is the lesser of the evils. Steward is mostly not trying to say anything controversial, except for his comments on Chavez, but he wasn't on the clock then. It might be just me but it seems sometimes Steward gets lost in the fight and doesn't know what is going on.
Has anyone else noticed that HBO edits the replays of PPV bouts to remove some of the live commentary?
Better late than never on The Wire. I'm actually watching season 5 for the 3rd time this week.
love listening to the great roy jones jr. this man has a lot of wisdom
Most definitely but listening to people on these forums say he's was just a good athlete and never learned fundamentals is very ignorant for them to say. You can tell Roy knows boxing inside and out just by the way he talks in interviews and analyzes fights.
I hate Floyd with a passion, but I can honestly say that the hate he gets from HBO is ridiculous. He is an ATG and one of these generations best fighters.
Name any other sport that tries to sh1t on one of its top guys?
Can you imagine baseball analyst sh1tting on Pujos 24/7.
What about the NBA sh1tting on MJ in the 90's, and guys like Kobe and Lebron?
I see those guys (in other sports) pointing out a few negative things, but it isn't the campaign of hate/discrediting that is seen in boxing.

Great video
I wish RJJ would do more fight commentating tbh
Dude is pretty much always dead on plus you dont hear him saying dumb **** like "Mayweather went from a hip hop fighter to a rap fighter"
Great find. I remember reading an article with Roy talking about the state of boxing commentary not long ago. As always Roy was dead on. Boxing really needs to fix this.
A lot of the people tuning in these fights are casual fans or noobs that only know what they get from these commentators. Showtime does an ok job but HBO needs serious overhaul. You got Jim Lampey on one side giving reach arounds to the house fighters and ruining the show with his wrong calls and schoolgirl cheering. Then you have Larry Merchant talking crap about everyone and Harold Lederman and his biased scores between the rounds. Emanuel Steward does a ok job most of the time. It's to the point where if Kellerman and RJJ aren't involved I keep the volume down.
max kellerman aint that good(definitely not enough to be put beside roy jones)
kellerman is also a fanboy and he shows it every chance he gets
kellerman deserves to take jim's job and rjj should be his right hand man. mix up who the third guy is every fight, but steward deserves a spot in the rotation, just cant see him every fight or he gets annoying.

spot on.
not only should most of the hbo commentators be fired but whoever is responsible for them keeping their jobs this long should be fired too.
Roy Jones is right.
I've always thought the excessive negativity of Teddy Atlas on ESPN turns away casual fans.
