I'm not trying to start a flame war or anything like that, but I just gotta say upon re-watching the fight a couple of times, round 12 in particular, I don't think the big punch that put Martinez down hurt him all that much. A couple of shots before the one that put him down, he got hit with some big ones that knocked him off balance. I believe it was a big right, then a left, and as he was falling another big left is was knocked him completely off balance and onto the canvas.
No question he was off balance, but he stood up almost immediately. I think it was a matter of fatigue and the knee injury that put him off balance and down. It took him a second to completely get his legs back under him, but I don't really believe he was as badly hurt as a lot of people claim he was. I just didn't see a fighter who was in immediate danger of being knocked unconscious. What do you all think?
I don't like this argument anyway because he would have fought differently if it was a 15 rounder. He would have conserved more energy. Useless argument. We haven't had 15 rounders for years now.
I agree that he wasn't as hurt as the commentators and crowd made it out to be. He got rocked and knocked down but he was still fighting and didn't even try to clinch or run. Jr. will get schooled again in the rematch. Excellent performance by Martinez.
This ^^^^^
And also people who want 15 rounds like in the old time should also ask for weigh-in the day of the fight, thus Chavez could not outweight his opponent by 20 freaking pounds
Not hurt, got up quickly, over a minute left, no clinching, other than Jr 30 sec after the KD, or running and Jr still couldnt end it. He was not one punch away and if it would have went 15, like some argue, then Jr would still get schooled for the remaining rounds. It was a KD people not even close to being a KO
I see both. While i do think his knee and fatigue contributed, i think its crazy to say he wasnt hurt. I think it was the right hand seconds prior that really hurt him bad, and the left hook just got him off balance. He recovered pretty well, still took some hard shots as chavez was trying to close the deal, shots that if martinez wasnt hurt would not gave landed.
Something i havent seen mentioned much at all, is props to weeks for letting the fight continue and letting martinez fight thru. There were some bervous seconds there where chavez was pouring it on, and martinez wasnt taking the punches well. Weeks, if he was trigger happy, could have stopped the fight. Not saying he should have, but could have
I said the same thing upon first viewing... I saw a fighter who got knocked down, but wasn't as hurt as the crowd and commentators wanted us to believe. I do believe it was more than fatigue that put him down though, it was a clean shot followed by another while he was defenseless against the ropes. That to me shows more than Martinez has either an iron jar or extremely impressive recovery. Chavez had more than enough time to put away a badly hurt fighter but he didn't. Martinez even went and fought right back and traded, not something a hurt fighter would do.
he's just tired and exhausted after all the work he's done and chavez caught him with something clean in the twelve.. I really wish it didn't happen though.. I'm still disappointed that Martinez didn't really push for the KO that he's been saying. what he has done was already expected from him and he was the one who almost got KOed.
What I'm saying is that he didn't appear to be all that badly hurt. He's was shaken pretty good, but I don't think Chavez was "one punch away" from a KO or anything like.
