I know his work ethic is strange and he uses weed in his training, but he gained my grudging respect taking a determined Martinez's thudding left hand to the face for twelve rounds and never getting knocked down. I mean, Serg broke his hand on Chavez face and Chavez was still standing. He tried to let Martinez tire himself out and pounce on him in the late rounds, and he did score a knockdown.
As to his training with weed well that can be done. I'm just saying its possible. In 24-7, they said he doesn't wake up till 6 or 7. I bet you he spent a lot of time in his room smoking herb and training. A common misconception is that weed makes you lazy, eat a lot, and ect. But it really depends on how you use the high and what quality you are smoking. It can be used to increase intensity and focus of workouts and also for inspiration. The problem many have is herb tends to skew the line between fantasy and reality, so it can promote delusion. But as long as you remain mindful, it can be used for training.
I'm just saying its possible. Not that I do any of that nonsense anymore, I have kids, but its somewhat along the same lines as drunken master, only high master.
As a side note, I actually have my doubts that Chavez will remain on the level he's at without herb, if he's so used to training with it.
Chavez is ok. But you have to admit he looked lost and confused for 10 rounds against Martinez. With recent marijuana and alcohol problems, his road back is going to be a hard one, even with the WBC's help.
It's really not that impressive for a fighter of his size to still be standing after that. As Roy put it, "He looks like a solid cruiserweight" Chavez Jr is alright with me though, but his struggles against Martinez had nothing to do with his training methods in my opinion. Jeff Mayweather said it best "Your not gonna beat Martinez by loading up on all your shots". This is why Martinez, who isn't known for having a great defense looked that much better defensively, Jr. made himself too easy to read. Every time he tried to load up the left hook Martinez was in a whole different area code.
