Bernard Hopkins "Stop asking me about Chavez Jr. He aint nothing but a gimmick.."

47-year-old former middleweight and light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins has never been one to mince words, hide his true feelings, or miss a chance to grab some attention when he can. Tonight he took to Twitter and made brief comments about both Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and Sergio Martinez. On Chavez Jr: Stop asking me about chavez jr. He aint nothing but a gimmick.. he dont take this serious.. On Wednesday, it was reported that Chavez Jr had failed his Nevada drug test, which came back positive for marijuana following last Saturday's loss to Martinez at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. It's no exaggeration to say that over his boxing career, Hopkins (52-6-2, 32 KO) has indeed taken things very seriously, staying in immaculate physical condition over the years, which has allowed him to stay a top contender and champion well past a normal expiration date for a fighter's relevant career. It's also what has allowed him to be successful at all at 175 pounds, where he's a fairly small fighter, having spent the vast bulk of his career at 160. He's been able to hang with bigger men and often dominate quality fighters well into his 40s. But he didn't stop with Chavez Jr, and seemed to be possibly angling for a fight with Martinez: Martinez style is very easy to beat.. trust me Tito, Palvik, Tarver he just like them. Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO) isn't going to fight Hopkins unless Bernard made a crazy attempt to come back all the way to 160, which isn't going to happen. Martinez has even balked at moving up to 168 pounds, so even a super middleweight -- effectively a catchweight for them -- clash wouldn't work, and would still be a crazy move by Bernard (though he's pulled crazier off in the past). Of course, Martinez isn't really much like Trinidad, Pavlik, or Tarver in terms of style, but Bernard can say just about whatever he wants, taken with grains of salt. Hopkins hasn't fought since April, when he dropped a clear 12-round decision to Chad Dawson in Atlantic City on HBO. He has one fight left on his HBO deal, and has said many times he does not intend to retire, and will fight on. ever heard of Roy Jones Jr? Martinez isn't as quick as Jones was but he is certainly at his best, quicker than any version of Hopkins, in terms of hands and feet and reflexes. Having said that, Hopkins quick step in and use of short, sharp punches could seriously harm Martinez. He'd have to take a hell of a lot of punches but then again, Hopkins would have to deal with Martinez's power. The advantage is obviously with Hopkins, his experience, size, skill and better resume make him a favourite, but only slightly. From what I've been hearing of Hopkins he seems jealous of Martinez and is probably looking for one last massive payday. The old nut job even wanted a fight with Haye :sombrero::lol1: I dont know whether to laugh or cry.

:lol1: man I rock with Serg but you're absolutely right!!!! I like watching Sergio too, but it's stupid. Just because his hands are down? People only say that because Roy always seems to be commentating during Sergio's fights and they always compare him to Roy. I'd buy a Pacquiao comparison before I'd say Martinez is like Roy. I don't see the similarities at all.

This thread is beyond embarrassing. There are some trolls for sure, but then there are people trying to tell me Martinez would trouble Hop for real?? Christ! Comparing Martinez style to Roy Jones? Newsflash: Roy was a huge middleweight who in his younger days was nearly impossible to hit, he was one of the best we have ever seen (and I would say Hop took 4 rounds from Jones in their first fight). Martinez is a very small middleweight who is still no where near as fast or elusive as Jones was even at those higher weights. Martinez is not even a particularly well rounded fighter compared to some of the best fighters of today. He is fast and hits very hard which makes him difficult to attack, he is good with his movement, but has a wide open guard. How overrated can a fighter get? To tell you the truth I am not even sure if Martinez is as fast as a prime Hopkins. If you doubt this I implore you to watch tape of Hopkins in his early 30's. Sergio has been top 5-6 p4p for a few years, Hopkins was p4p for over a decade. Roy Jones was p4p #1 for a decade...get a ****ing grip.

I definitely do not see Martinez beating Hopkins at 160 in his prime, Martinez would not be successful against someone like BHOP, Forrest (RIP), Ward or Mayweather, He cant keep his hands down and beat those guys.

lol did you even watch the fight? this comment makes me think you didn't even watch the fight. In that fight they stared at eachother most of the fight with jones letting off a couple more combinations which had him winning the rounds. but hopkins won like 3-4 rounds to me still. He caught jones with some good right hands and that wasn't even a PRIME hopkins. In fairness, Jones did that with a broken right hand.

He tore up EVERYBODY in FRONT of him. Nobody had a chance against him during his title reign til he got older and got his reign ended from Taylor who i Feel Hopkins should of kept his title because you got to BEAT the champion. He didn't exactly beat him, Plus hopkins Closed out all the championship rounds in both fights dominately. Watch Hopkins vs Lispey. Hopkins vs Mercado 2. Hopkins vs johnson. hopkins vs echols, hopkins vs jackson, hopkins vs brown and you will see hopkins put HURTS to them every round. and as rounds went by, hopkins only got Stronger and faster and smarter and mentally broke them down and BAM TKO'd a lot of them in his early title reign.

That would be a good payday for BHop and Chavez jr. Hopkins would whoop that ass. That puts it into perspective. Chavez doesnt have much chance in hell against a 47 year old. Chavez is used to winning based on a size advantage and he wont have that against hopkins and hopkins movement, distance and timing would made his brain explode.

panda's calling u crazy bhop wouldve beaten martinez but as often said by me: nobody has an easy fight when in the ring with martinez the only middleweight around when bhop was still fighting at that weight that couldve beaten him back then was winky wright...however their fight was a year or two overdue at a weight winky wasnt comfortable at. dude was eating crispy creme donuts every other day while in camp....they even showed it in the countdown special I wanted to see that one so bad at 160! I thought winky could have defeated him convincingly with no doubt due to his combination of defense and high work rate. Hopkins was prone to starting too slow and throwing too little and thats why he lost to Taylor (which I agreed with) though he schooled taylor towards the end of the fights but it was too late. Winky could have won on activity and defense. I was sooo pissed to see Winky come in out of shape and let that fight slip away when they met at 170. WTF was he thinking, you never take hopkins lightly.

Call me crazy, but I think prime for prime at 160, Martinez would have beaten Hopkins in a close one. B-Hop would have a hard time with Sergio's athleticism and movement. Hopkins would have schooled him. Hes too wide open with no defense, that is asking for trouble. Martinez isnt on RJJ's level, he gets hit a pretty lot for his slickster style.

Theres no way I can think Martinez beats Prime BHOP, and believe me I wasnt even there at his prime years. I just watch tapes, and I dont think Martinez has what it takes, he's good but not good enough to beat prime BHOP. NO hate or whatsoever.
