Sure, he's an offensive trainer, but I find it a little strange that he's been blamed for the Khan and Chavez Jr losses.
1) In the corner before Amir's first knockdown, Roach clearly tells his fighter to throw 2-3 punches, then get out. That was the game plan: take Garcia deep and get a late KO/stoppage or score a wide UD. He can hardly be blamed for Khan's inability to take a punch or, indeed, his decision to throw 4-5-6 punches at a time against a counter-puncher.
2) Chavez Jr. Again, Roach is giving his fighter clear instructions from round 4 onwards about letting his hands go. Chavez refuses, and seemingly ignores his trainer's advice. Round 10 - Roach again tells his fighter to throw punches in bunches, but his advice is again ignored.
Not a huge fan of the guy, but he seems to get a lot of stick in NSB.
I don't hate Roach at all, I do think he is a good trainer, but yes I think he is overrated. When I say overrated, I don't mean in simple trainer terms, but to get TOY so many times, really? Over one fighter who was an anomaly? Roach gets more credit than he deserves for 2 reasons:
1. He has Parkinson's disease.
2. He trains Pacquiao.
His disability/disease and the global fame of Pacquiao contribute to him winning FOY. He is a purely offensive trainer, how many of his fighters have good defense and inside fighting skills? How many can cutoff the ring and set traps? Pac, Khan, Jr. are just come forward offensive fighters. Khan, Linares and Pac already had their abilities when they found Roach, he just helped some. How many other fighters has Roach actually developed honestly? The only fighters he really took and develope some were Kayode and Jr. Kayode is still total garbage and Jr. is still somewhat one-dimensional. If you took Pac away, much of the world would not even know who Roach was. To his defense, maybe his disease is what is limiting him, which is very possible.
I think Roach is a great trainer..
Not much you can do if your fighter doesnt listen to you in the fight..
Or if your fatigued, chinny, or just a *****..
Khan and Chavez dont like being told what to do.. They need there horns to be blown.
Its the truth.. Freddy has great gameplans if his fighters listen..
khan and chavez are pampered and have been all their careers.. they need someone to set them straight..
nah, roach used to be good back in the day but he's lost it now, his illness turned him into an incompetent zombie.. he's about as useful a trainer as angelina jolie.. and his gameplans are terrible too.. he needs to quit before he ruins every fighter he comes in contact with
He is a good trainer, it's just because the media make so much of him that people pay more attention to him and his flaws. A trainer can only do so much, it's Khan who decided to trade rather than hold, it#s Chavez who decided to not train as hard as he could etc.

roach had khan, pacquiao, chavez jr, linares, rodella, mcewan all lose in like 12 months and he's supposed to be a good coach? is the guy training them to make sure they lose or something and then betting against them to get the cash.. i mean whats going on, this guy needs to get out of the damn sport and stop ruining fighters careers..
The reason people say he sucks or is overrated is because a few years ago he was considered a trainer that could make anyone a champion. He's a good trainer but he isn't the king maker that people thought a few years ago.
roach is a good trainer but a lot of people love to toot his horn. i think he's incredibly one dimensional as a trainer just like a lot of trainers but he's a smart matchmaker. nothing spectacular or legendary about him. if you want to sharpen your offense he's a a guy to go to. doubt he'll teach you anything else. seems that way with a lot of his fighters.
LoL @ these keyboard know it all on here. Here's a quick reminder, roach owns his own gym which is doing great and is training more than 1 pro boxer. Yet these keyboard know it all feel that roach is overrated?? Well go show us how it's done boyeeeeeee!! Go train someone and when ya win a title then u can come back on here and say roach is overrated.
Uh...BECAUSE HE IS OVERRATED!
People been saying this for years on this forum but of course the Pacquiao fans and Khan fans and the other fighters he trained came to his Defense, NOT BECAUSE he truly was a "GREAT TRAINER" but more so because he was the Trainer of their favorite fighter...what is Freddie Roach even known for as a TRAINER? For Example Emmanuel Steward is known for making his fighters USE THE JAB as well as size/reach advantage...but what is Roach known for?
