put all their sweat, time, hardwork, committment into a training camp. go through the pain barrier, slaughter their body and abstain from sexual desires or family interaction, only to decide not to throw punches come fight night?
its a serious question. how do they expect to win a fight if they dont throw many punches? i dont get it.
Jr had the confidence from years of handpicked fights. Then, he hit a wall in trying to deal with Sergios footwork. If you can't get the angle, you can't throw your punch. The guy just isn't there to hit or, he's baiting you for a counter. Same exact thing happened to Dawson in regard to Ward's footwork.
Lots of times the occasion gets to them and they tighten up and that compounds with them going into a shell because they are not getting off , boxing is such a mental game that people take mental side for granted , its not easy to have the mind and the body perfect for that one hour .
If this thread was because of Chavez , Roy Jones hit it on the head when he said Martinez would not allow him to get set , thats why he didnt appear to throw much , every time he wanted to fire , Sergio moved and Chavez must reset again , if you watch the fight and look only at their legs it tells the story .
certain things you have to get in the ring to understand.boxing isnt as simple as just go in there and fight, for someone whos never done it it might seem that way but it isnt. when you get hit so hard most of your body shuts down and goes numb you might be able to understand why someone becomes cautius.
sure everyone whos never fought say they would just let it all hang out and if they get knocked out they get knocked out, but those ppl are usually the same guys who ran from every fight in their life. its easy to talk from an armachair, when someone is beating you up in front of your friends and family and the crowd is yelling things change.
great post.

I think that some of those statements are wives tales. I think that fighters are still sexually active during training. Fighters do see their families during training as well.. otherwise, it can be counter productive..
You've never been in a boxing match before have you? it's mich harder than just throwing. People make it sound so simple. smh.

I think Chavez Jr was weakened by the weight loss and weight gain. Even before he got hit by anything serious he was a lot more sluggish than usual, definitely not as dynamic as he was in his previous fights. Those left hands to the body didn't help either. I don't know what he does to his body but that shit is taking its toll on him, and he's 26 now, the older he gets the harder it's gonna be for him to make 160. That's the price you pay for fighting smaller guys instead of fighting guys your own size.
If you're talking about Chavez Jr then it's obvious why.
As JMM once said, everything is great when you're throwing punches and hitting the opponent, but once he starts throwing back then everything gets a lot more complicated.
Jr tried to hit Martínez, but Martínez was just too fast and too strong. Chavez Jr realized that if he opened up he was going to get hurt because there was no way he was going to avoid those lethal counters.
Jr got scared because he hadn't face before a boxer like Martínez with all that speed and power, and once he realized about how good he really was he entered into that shell mode.
Credit to Jr for hanging on and fighting a good 12th round, but Martínez is just way too good for him.
hmm i dunno man. everytime chavez was landing you could see martinez was hurt. jr is quite a big puncher so it seemed odd that he wasnt throwing when it was clearly effective every time he did.
i do agree though martinez had a great game plan. roy jones explained his movement. the way he threw a punch every few seconds so jr couldnt set his feet. it meant jr was constantly trying to find angles to connect but martinez was throwing a jab then moving to the side. jr had to re-set his feet and by the time he did that.. bang.. he's been hit again.
