The win is nowhere near in a dominating fashion. Even Cotto thought he got robbed. Trout avoided Cotto's left hook like a cowering kitty. It's embarrassing for a huge guy like him. Smaller Mayweather did significantly better and stood in front of Cotto. The holding is excessive. And I didn't like the ref breaking them up too early. They should have hired the ref in the Guerrero/Berto fight. Cotto just got tired of chasing a huge guy who is clearly in survival mode from the very start.
Berto needs that kind of ref, haha...
Holding and clinching is part of boxing. It also separates good inside fighters from others. And I would agree that the ref needs to give them time to fight it out during the hold before enforcing a break. Theoretically, excessive holding should be penalized either by the ref or the fighter. Much like what we saw what Guerrero did to Berto. Holding should be made a disadvantage. It also makes the fight boring and uneventful.
Trout was supposed to win this fight by KO. He didn't. He was up against a guy who is clearly in an uncomfortable weight class, on his way out and close to retirement. Not to mention the height and reach advantage.
This thread is silly in the first place. If you're too timid to make a prediction, then you're no better than a casual fan. WHAT IF threads are stupid nonsense. You want it both ways and you always tend to suit your agenda whatever comes out of the result.
Bushbaby, the topic starter, said early on that Trout would win decisively. He wasn't on the fence at all.

:lol1: Revisionist history happens a lot but not usually the day after the fight!
Trout was supposed to win by KO? He wasn't "supposed" to see the final bell! 95% of this forum were calling him "Feather fisted".
He was the underdog and the majority thought Cotto would win by dominant fashion or by KO.
You even had some jokers on here saying Trout isn't a legit opponent for Cotto.

You do know that Trout was the black guy, not the Puerto Rican, right?

If cotto gets beat/dominated by trout to me it's a confirmation that the world will end on that same month on the 21. lol
Btw, I got a billion points on Cotto. anyone looking to bet pm me.
Really curious about this because I feel that's exactly what's going to happen. I know what it'll mean to me, but what will it mean to all you guys??
First off this fight is big risk little reward for cotto. Trout has good skills good size and seems to possess a good chin. If cotto can beat him the only thing he gains is bargaining equality againt the likes of a canelo so im not sure why he didnt just move up and try for that middle weight strap. If trout is dominated it might be Maybe the next star is born. If trout an vet the stoppage i see cotto
Aybe hanging them up. This will probably be a closer fight with cotto edging out a victory. The real question is where does cotto go from here? Pac wont gove him a rematch without a catchweight, maybe floyd would consider another go round. Not sure really
Once again Cotto is fighnting some go and Say he will get dominated.
What will happen if Cotto dominates Trout?
Trout is garbage?
Easy bro, nothing to get offended about man.:guilty:

I actually think that cotto's body work is overrated at this point in his career. He was a devastating body puncher at lower weights and he committed to it fully, but as of late it seems he must jab to close distance and does not want to risk being countered by throwing body punches.
On the other hand, in the fights I've seen of Trout he is very committed to body work and it has been effective granted it has been against lesser competition.
I think Trout has a real chance of taking this fight not only bc of the above mentioned advantages (youth, size, power, speed) but bc he throws his combinations both going forward and while backing up. I think his ability to adapt his game plan in the ring along with his commitment to his jab and body punching will keep him in the fight throughout.
All that being said, I would still put my money on cotto, though if he loses I will not be shocked and it would not change my opinion of him as a top notch fighter.
If Trout at no point does not attempt to stalk Cotto, I don't think he can win. No matter his size advantages, Cotto has proven in nearly every fight he's been in, that he can close the gap as good as anybody in the game. If Trout is happy to let Cotto come to him and counter, he will lose. Cotto miraculously only let Floyd land 20% of his punches under Diaz, while being able to get on the inside of Floyd and throw body shots, unfortunately, nobody is a better defender than Mayweather. If Cotto gets inside of Trout, he won't be avoiding those body punches like Floyd did.
Trout has to pressure Cotto to win the fight, he's simply not good enough to continuously fight off the back foot and win
And after the 8th, which I agree is where Cotto has shown to lose stamina, you believe Trout can go 4-4, which I believe he can't. I think Cotto is a good championship rounds, round stealer. Trout needs tenacity to back up his his natural advantages.
Also, wasn't it reported that Diaz is moving parts of training camp to Colorado? I think he's highlighted stamina as a key issue too. We'll see how that plays out
Another good defense of your points. But I know Trout has the ability to box at distance with Cotto. He possess's the longer jab. He has excellent footwork & while Cotto's own handspeed is underrated Trouts isn't.
Trout will win the 1st round because Cotto likes to feel people out & when Cotto realizes he cannot hurt him, he'll be forced to press the fight & Trout won't sit on the ropes & allow Cotto to work. Gun fight or tactical fight, I see Trout having the physical & mental advantages. I cannot wait for this fight. Like I said I'm glad that it's Cotto who'll be ushering in this elite fighter into stardom!!:boxing:
Fine breakdown/ explanation of the Clottey comparison.
But I disagree with Trout stalking, if Trout pressure's Cotto, Cotto falls apart. Cotto won't win boxing from the outside either because Trout has a very good jab in his own right & is longer.
Just like you say, if Cotto cannot hurt Trout, (which we agree) upon, he doesn;t have the condition to outbox Trout. When Cotto tires after the 8th round (which he almost always does), Trout takes over & distances himself to haul in the W!!
