He's definitely not shown signs of slippage. after the KO of Williams:
1) Destroyed Dzinziruk whom at that night would give most middleweights trouble.
2) Barker was better than expected and played a mostly defensive game. This gave Sergio issues because he wasn't bringing much of an offense. But at the same time, Sergio was winning each round based on activity. You can't win a fight if u don't let your hands go.
3) Macklin i feel was def a guy who was a good opponent. He like Barker, played a defensive game, which threw Martinez off. But with time, Martinez was breaking him down.
He hasn't been slipping, its just he fought recent guys who's styles have caused him to adjust. I don't see Chavez being able to play a defensive game much at all considering he he gets hit so much.
I think it's hard to tell, especially because his most recent opponents have been boring, defensive fighters. Martinez has been forced to press the action more and gradually break his opponent down.
However, in every fight he's proved to be faster, stronger and have more endurance than the guy in the opposite corner.
The thing with Chavez Jr. is he'll be coming forward all night, putting pressure on Martinez. He's also known to throw wide shots. This could play right into Martinez's strengths.
I don't think there has been any signs of him slipping. Even if he has slightly, you can't really knock a guy who's knocking everyone out.
I just hope he can do it again this weekend.
His last two fighst were against guys who were very cautious in the 1st few rounds so they didnt play into Segios strength but he got to them in the end. He would have always had an awkward night with them at any stage of his career.
So whilst I dont think its fair to say he is in decline it would also be naieve to suggest that a man in his late 30's still has the reflexes of his early 30's. Afterall if he were to lose on Sat the 1st thing people would bring up would be his age.
he's currently the more superior athlete then chavez jr but he;snot the same martinez who gave a war to kelly or williams 1/2
who do i want to win? jr
who will probally win? martinez
though he's showed me in the macklin/barker fights he has shown some signs of slippage
I see him take his time to adjust to his two recent opponents decision to box from the opening bell. He figures out his best mode of attack, then wrecks his opponents with counterpunching and angles.
With all the added dislike and fuel to destroy Chavez Jr., I can't see Junior winning this. I've been wrong before, but he just seems so made to order for Martinez. The pessimist in me makes me think he sees something I don't, which is why he's so relaxed about the fight.
I just can't wait for the opening bell. After years of waiting, it's time.
I don't think so. Some people may say that because he got touched a bit by Barker and because Macklin had some success the first 6-7 rounds. But as far as speed, reflexes, and power, he's still the same guy he was in 2010.
He hasnt slipped at all. Whats happened is that he's fighting guys he's not motivated to fight. You can tell that he's just going through the motions in the ring but as soon as it gets tough, he just takes it to another gear and shows thats he's easily a couple of classes over these guys. Against Jr. he will be motivated and will be like the best Sergio for all 12 rounds but the question is even still, will it be enough
He's still the same fighter when he got sonned by Margarito.
And did you see him trying to stand up after he was sitting on his raft thing on 24/7? Dude looked like he was about to pull a hip muscle.
