Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta who kept his undefeated streak going with a dominating performance that ended with a 9th round TKO at 2:59 of the round over American Ty Barnett at the Texas Station Casino in Las Vegas last Saturday is being given a shot at IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez of Mexico later this year.
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told the Manila Standard “I want him (Gesta) to fight Miguel Vazquez as soon as possible. I talked to Vince Parra (his co-manager and trainer) and they are going to get a nutritionist to make sure he can do 135 pounds and if they can I will make that fight in October-November.”

When he's actually faced some top contenders, and proven that he's been improving from fight-to-fight. Vasquez is as good as it gets in the LW division. I doubt Gesta is gonna go in there with his raw style and beat a good boxer like Vasquez. Vasquez via boxing clinic
Yeah but let's remember, Gesta is a Top Rank fighter, and it seems as though putting on a boxing clinic against a Top Rank fighter is just never enough...
So, we shall see.
He's 25. If not now than when will he be ready?

big step up for gesta..i'm not sure if his ready just yet for a title fight, but good luck to him anyways if this fight does happen.

Actually, Gesta had been given a shot at Vazquez's title last year, but his manager/trainer turned it down. Arum had intended to make this fight all along and he probably became frustrated over Gesta's lack of progress so he decided to make it a priority once and for all . It's sink or swim time for him. Meanwhile, Vazquez hasn't been in a high profile fight in a while and this should provide him with the kind of exposure he needs.
I don't think gesta is that terrible to be honest. And given that he has had I believe no amateur experience a la' Vasquez Jr. Given that I can respect what he brings to the table. Why would you not? But I do have a problem with his in-ring inactivity. He's most likely hiding stamina problems and that will cost him.
Agreed. For a guy with no amateur experience he's doing good. And yes he definitely has stamina issues.

Vazquez is an awkward, slick fighter that has solid timing, I can definitely see him outboxing and outworking Gesta. But with his southpaw stance, strength, power, and combinations I think Gesta has a decent shot at the upset. The difference between Gesta's power and Vazquez' and Gesta's aggressiveness might be favored by judges enough to close the gap on Vazquez' defensive advantage and clean punching.
If Gesta goes in there swinging wild and trying to be cute Vazquez is gonna tag him all night.
Crazy sh1t Gesta is going from fighting bums to this huge fight. He needs to win this without any gift decision. If he wins he's gonna shut a lot of haters up.
