It's on. Rigondeaux will defend his belt against Robert Marroquin in one of the bouts on the undercard of the Martinez-Chavez fight. According to Bob Arum, Rigo agreed to a new short-term deal to do the fight on Sept. 15 while they continue to discuss a longer-term agreement.
Looking forward to this one.
It's not like Rigo is pulling a Vanes, calling out guys and then side-steps when the offers reach his table. Arum is bringing him along like a 24 year old prospect. Rigo knows that to make noise instantly, he has to get Donaire in the ring. Personally, I don't mind Donaire not fighting Rigo yet. I take exception to the fact that Rigo has to fight opposition that won't prove anything to the doubters, or fights that won't increase his star power. Putting a beatdown on Kennedy was expected. Beating Marroquin will also be expected.
You know, I thing Rigo is just in a tough spot, when it comes to making fights.
We all know he isn't your "average" 10 fight fighter. And there lies the rub.
The dude has what, over 400 amateur fights, and is a 2 time Olympic gold medalist, who is extremely gifted.
So clearly he will be a dangerous opponent for any of the top dogs at 122.
"But who has he beat? He only has 10 fights!" Is the argument against him. It's a like a dog chasing it's own tail.
I think that Marroquin is a solid fight for him, way to grab one of the straps, and throw his name out there.
Arce wants no part of Rigo, of that I have no doubt.
How do you know he hasn't been trying? Even if I didn't know anything about the guy, I know that Rigo, fast approaching the downside of his career, would be begging for some bigger fights. Realize that this man defected from Cuba with nothing and still has very little. He needs to make his money and fast. I don't believe for a second that he would refuse any reasonable fights. What kind of money do you think he's making fighting no-names? His effective career will, sadly, soon be over. He wants to fight the big dogs, believe me.
becuase nonito is all he talks about , thats how...and if he did, we would've heard it by now...there's 2 things that rigo talks about..nonito and how everyone is ducking him...sh1t there were times when pwill and clottey were claimed avoided fighters..lol
fighting no names makes him not much ..but fighting name fighters despite the assumption of his fans he destroys em all like an arce , rafa or a vasquez jr quadroples the money he gets fighting prospects...and raises his stocks more as afighter beating these guy than beating prospects and bums
Mares wants to fight him but we know it ain't gonna happen.
I don't doubt that. It would be just as accurate to say that other fighters' promoters don't want any part of Rigo. I don't believe too many fighters are actually afraid of Rigo (although Rico Ramos sure did a good impression of fear in their fight). lol
well, the only way to find out is try...instead of assuming everyone is scared of you what about trying .. given the opposition rigo has beaten , i think the reason he gets no attention from the top dogs is more of the "lil reward part " than anything...

And you think Arce would fight Rigo right now? He's in line for a fight with Donaire. Jorge won’t even rematch Rojas, for fuck’s sake. With Nonito in the mix, no one wants any part of Rigo. Whether you think he's as good as advertised is one thing, but you have to admit the man's dangerous. Everyone regards "El Chacal" as "too much risk, too little reward."
Mares wants to fight him but we know it ain't gonna happen.
rigo is a slick mofo... great talent... but i doubt the top guys around his division is "scared" of him either... high risk, low reward...
still, donaire in a very convincing UD if they ever fight...

you really think arce would fight rigo??????????? i must say, you're completely naive to realty.
arce is talking about a tune up fight.
these guys don't wanna fight rigo..................
There it is.
I've been yelling for a Rigo/Arce fight. If Arum had any intentions of putting Rigo on the map, he would put him in there with Arce. That fight could possibly make him a household name.
Jorge's past it and, with his style, Rigo would chew him up and spit him out. Arce is looking for a payday before his time's up.
i agree with all that exept the bold...that is the most pathetic excuse ever for fighting sh1t oponents..all rigo has been calling out is nonito, thats all he talks about...i dont know if he knows but nonito aint the only top dog in his weighclass man...hell, even an old arce is more legit for him than a prospect man..

Nonito has much more say in choice of opponent. He's a star...and even he doesn't have ultimate control over his career. Guillermo would take on Donaire in a heartbeat; you can bet that. Trouble is, the big names won't fight "El Chacal." You can't compare Rigondeaux's pull with that of Nonito.

that's the thing that i don't understand with these people..........rigo struggles with getting anyone to fight him let alone the donaires of the world & you're gonna attack him for this?............makes me scratch my head.
rigo is keeping busy & taking on the best opponents that will actually get in the ring with him. (he'll get his big fights because if he keeps winning he'll force himself into the big fights)
marroquin is no bum it's a decent fight.
People choose to believe what they want, I guess. What's really going on is rather obvious, in my opinion.
like you said a prospect...rigo fans talk a lot of sh1t when nonito fights mathebula calibers yet give props to rigo with this sh1t...
i expect him to fight better opponennt intead of claiming "everyone is scared of him...

From what I've read in another thread, TR/GB/TMT have made offers to Rigo.
Lara/Gamboa/Rigo on the same roster? That's a lot of talent.
CubanGuyNYC, do you know, or at least make an educated guess on which weights Rigo is capable of making?
He's fought at 126 before if Im not mistaken. MIGHT be able to make 130 but he's too small even for 126 IMO.
What's your problem with this fight? Marroquin is a good prospect, and no one else wants to fight Rigo. Tell me, what do you expect Guillermo to do?
Just ignore the guy. He's annoying as fk.
If Rigo could move up to 126 or down to 118, it would instantly make him a more valuable fighter. No guys wanna fight me at 122? Fine, i'll just go to another division and continue my reign of terror elsewhere. Team Rigo should start thinking about it, if they haven't already.
Marroquin is incredibly unproven, I would say he beat up a bunch of truck driver, garbage men and taxi drivers but would not want to disparage truck drivers, garbage men and taxi drivers by comparing them to Marroquin's opposition~
