The scoring system is a complete mistake and they have not been able to admit it. So fans and olympic boxers will continue to be punished by it til the olympic committee admits it doesn't work.
It is a shame because crooked officiating was what needed to be fixed not the scoring process. Now however crooked officiating can be hidden and excused under a faulty scoring system.
It isn't an accurate representation of the sport as it stands now. If it isn't an accurate representation of boxing then should it even be called boxing?
No. I'm angry about Spence, Gausha and Waren's losses but I'm still having fun watching. I like seeing the talent that's out there especially from other countries that I'm not familiar with. The Cuban and Ukranian fighters have looked exceptional so far.
But damn, I've watched hours and hours of fights over the past week. I don't think I've even seen a normal TV show or series in over a week. lol
Lol @ the reactions because the US boxing team got owned. When all the Americans got through initially there was no criticism.
The only I would change is giving more incentive (points) for KD's.
With that much headgear, KD's in the Olympics might as well be KO's.
Yes they should scrap it completely. This kids train hard with hopes and the scoring system and the judges don't do justice to the sport.
Too many bad decisions and in the end you don't have the legit best fightig the best.
In all seriousness, the current system was put in place precisely because the old system was deemed too easily corruptible. The powers-that-be attempted to take the judging element out of Olympic boxing. What they didn't bank on was some peoples' limitless capacity for shamelessness.
We have terrible decisions in the pros using the ten-point-must system. What makes us think it'll be any different in the amateurs? It'll be a long time before they can implement a genuinely fair system.
If I'm answering the question, I think that the introduction of the 10-point must system will fix most of the problems that can be fixed. I don't know anything about corruption so I won't waste time with idle speculation. However, I do question the objectivity of the TS given the timing of the thread...
What would removing from the Olympics do exactly? There are still other world/european etc etc amateur boxing events and they are judged the same.
Suddenly amateur boxing has a problem when American's do badly in them.
They need to change the whole system. It should be like pro boxing but for 3 rounds and with headgear. Fights should be judged on clean punching and effectiveness.
The the only thing that needs to change is the point system, and the officials.
The essence of the amateur sport needs to remain. Clean punches, movement, and good defence. These are the fundamentals of the sport, and without them, the pro ranks would eventually consist of nothing but Ricky Hattonesque boxing.
Without the AM sport, there is no Ali, no Jones, no Mayweather, no De La Hoya, no Khan, and no Ward.
What exactly makes you think there's anything wrong with it, the only problems i've seen so far have been from bad Ref's and very very occasionally off scoring.
You get Bad ref's and off scoring in the Pro game with far greater frequency than at the olympics.
I'm putting up options to facilitate the discussion of it with no changes being the least severe and complete removal being the most severe. Get your panties out of your ass princess.
except the question isn't phrased neutrally at all.
no, that's retarded. stop being a sore loser. they just need to rout out the corruption, which is concededly rife, and adjust the scoring system (the most recent alterations are borderline absurd).I'm putting up options to facilitate the discussion of it with no changes being the least severe and complete removal being the most severe. no, that's retarded. stop being a sore loser. they just need to root out the corruption, which is concededly rife, and adjust the scoring system some more as the most recent alterations to it (the five judges and the discarded scorecards, etc.) are borderline absurd.
