We'll never know now, because all the people defending Ortiz can't backtrack if something similar happens in the future, but I'm about 95% certain that if Andre Ward or Sergio Martinez or Nonito Donaire or either Klitchsko had suffered a broken jaw late in a fight they were winning and quit without trying to gut it out at all, we would not be seeing so much sympathy and understanding right now.
Imagine if Floyd or Pac had quit here, man. This site would still be down from all the people wanting post hate.
He didn't even have to fight the remaining 9 minutes. If he had even attempted to fight with the broken jaw, I certainly wouldn't be calling him a quitter. But he didn't, the jaw broke, he went back to the corner, ignored his corner telling him to fight on, and quit.
It's one of those situations where if you take the risk, then you better make it pay off or else you might regret it later on. Ortiz might be pissed at himself that he didn't at least try, but you can tell that doubt was starting to overcome him. I wonder.....had Ortiz knew the judges score-cards, would he have sucked it up and kept going? It could've worked against him though, cuz Lopez was going at him full force and if he found out he was down, he would've tried even harder to take Ortiz's head off.
There was no right decision, Ortiz was screwed either way. That's why I blame his lack of defense and carelessness as why he was beaten, not his heart or determination.
Ortiz fights the remaining 9 mins of the fight with an injured jaw, and he would've been praised for showing such heart. Ortiz does the opposite, and he's a quitter, a coward and every other synonym.

Who are you talking to?
I know all about pain buddy. I was just in a motorcyle accident a few months ago and my entire leg was split open.
Don't even get me started
I didn't have the luxury of quitting when that **** was throbbing and they couldn't give me anymore painkillers.
I just had to suck it the **** up.Ok, so after the accident did you get up with that busted leg dust yourself and hop back on the bike to continue riding? If not then you're a quitter.
internet tough guys
"FOK YEA I WULD HAVE KEPT FIGHTIGN NO DOUBT"

LOL.....I bet these same posters calling Ortiz a pvssy etc look just like that kid in that photo.
you're the one making assumptions, i'm only talking about myself.
And I am angry at this situation. Ortiz should have stepped up. Instead he chose to be a coward, with millions watching and people here are defending that. You said something about me using an excuse to feel better about failing. Regardless, I'm simply saying that it's easy to look at the next man and say what you would do if you were in that situation. Its easy to come to the net and say "Id have kept fighting with a broken jaw" een youve never been in that situation. One day, you'll realize that.
title. pride. reputation.
for some fighters, that's enough to keep going
but dont mind Primera, he's Victor's barber and washes Temo's truck on Wednesdays
Sig worthy.
yeah use that as an excuse next time you fail if it makes you feel better.
The world is hard no matter who you are or how you act, it doesn't change for anybody. Being soft never did anyone any good.I'm not one to make excuses. You look foolish making assumptions about people that you don't know. Let some of that air out of your chest man, you're on the Internet.
Everyone here criticizing Ortiz probably have never been in the ring, and I know for sure have never faught with a broken jaw.
Boxing is a mental sport. Cuts, closed eyes, will affect your thinking. But a broken jaw will do alot more. Ortiz had 3 more rounds, and would have been stopped if he continued.
He did take a few more punches after he broke it.
He'll get his rematch...and maybe he'll learn to keep his mouth closed and chin tucked this time.
Why would you even wish an injury on any fighter???
Same thing I thought. That is just crazy.

Me personally wouldn't wish for a better fighter to suffer that kind of injury just to prove a point. The obvious assumption is that Ortiz simply isn't a born fighter. When the fight is going his way, He's dynamic. When it's not he quits.
I am happy that lopez won because I did not want Ortiz ginger. I am not happy that Ortiz has to have his mouth wired shut because of it. He should retire & go get his degree. He's like Juan Diaz in that sense. They both fall apart when faced with adversity.
I wouldn't go wishing broken jaws on other fighters just to prove it. Ortiz is a quitter, why beat a dead horse??
Since I've never been in the ring and had my jaw broken, I choose to refrain from being critical of Ortiz. I will say that he had already established a pattern which may be the reason that some don't give him the benefit of the doubt. Still though, all the fake tough guy talk from guys posting on the Internet is silly.
People underestimate the severity of a broken jaw. That is all.
I don't care if X fighter continued, I think X fighter is stupid for further endangering his severe injury and possibly ending his own career at that very moment.
Name me one fighter who's career was ended because of a broken jaw.
Just one.

but what is the excuse for not even trying? Why cant he just go out in the 10th, box, jab, stick, move, run, and see what happens? If he does that, gets hit hard a few times and quits then no one rips him but he doesnt even try. He paniced and was calling for the ref. He didnt wanna hear his corner out at all. He wouldnt even give them a chance to speak.
Again, Lopez isnt some dominant pressure fighter and Ortiz was doing well when he boxed anywyas. He gave up

Titles at stake. That is all.
