Canelo now calling out Sergio Martinez? LOL. sure.
Well, in my opinion Canelo was looking forward to a fight with Victor Ortiz. You know why? Cause Canelo fights only 2 sorts of fighters: totally shot ones, and much smaller ones. Ortiz fits in the 2nd category.
Ortiz is basically a 140 pound fighter (who just got beaten by another natural 140 pound fighter in a welterweight fight), and Canelo was thinking "this boy is way too small for me. Looking forward to beating up Ortiz".
Let's look at Canelo's opponents in his world title fights:
He won the 154 pound title against a natural 147 pounder- Matthew Hatton who has heart, but is an average fighter at best. Recently Kell Brook outclassed Matthew Hatton. So that's how the "great" Canelo became world champion. Then Canelo fought Ryan Rhodes who is a little above average fighter at the end of his career.
Next opponent of "the legend" Canelo was Alfonso Gomez, another much smaller fighter who cant punch. Gomez is all heart but no power and no big skills. Cotto outclassed Gomez many many years earlier.
Now Canelo fought 2 fighters who were on the elite level, but: they were totally done and at the end of their careers. Which means: they were NOT elite anymore when Canelo fought them: Kermit Cintron and Shane Mosley.
That being said: Canelo is a cherrypicking fraud. A piece of garbage. And I dont think he is a bum cause he is not. But I cant stand fighters who use their promotions to fight shot fighters and bums their whole career. Lets be honest, this dude is making a career of beating bums and totally shot fighters. And THAT makes Canelo a disgrace to boxing.

This is why when people say that he'll "crush" Kirkland, I ask them "who has he beaten that will give you this indication"?
Then I hear two things:
1. Crickets
2. James lost to Ishida
True, James lost to Ishida, but he also beat 3 guys that punch much harder than Ishida (Vera, Julio, and Angulo).
Fact is, this kid has done nothing in his career that says he'll beat Kirkland. Why, because he gave Mosley his 3rd beating in 4 fights?
The kid has potential, but until he beats someone of substance, I can't pick him over Kirkland, Lara or Dzinziruk.
he beats kirkland and lara with ease. Why? you may ask. Well it's just common knowledge. Canelo is the superior fighter.
What is the obession with him holding a belt??? He is young, marketable and undefeated at a mere 21 years old. The belts that represent the major four sanctioning bodies mean nothing in today's world. I just want to watch two athletes put on a good show.
well when you hold a world title belt there is more expected out of you...and the fact that alvarez was pretty much handed the belt and continues to fight mediocre competition rubs people the wrong way including myself..especially considering people keep hyping him up despite the fact he hasn't really beaten anyone to deserve the type of hype he's getting.
Dude, if they weren't going to extend their date to November to fight Kirkland, the next guy should've been Lara.
He wouldn't be having problems finding someone to fight if he transitioned from Kirkland to Lara like he should have in the 1st place.
I won't argue that. I would like to have seen that, too. But if they were wanting to put it on PPV, Lara isn't really a good choice.

Golden Boy has done a great job with Canelo, and he is perfectly on track in terms of competition and age. He didn't ask for that title and shouldn't have it, but that doesn't change the fact that he is young and has done really well so far. Rhoads was supposed to be a tough test and he dominated him with ease.
Dude is 22, what's the rush?
So how do you feel about Chavez jr.?
answer above question raskat ...
canelo has been trying to make competitive fights, paul williams was a very dangerous fight, kirkland according to you has beat better opposition and victor ortiz is still a good fighter, all those fights fell apart for different reasons, and now no matter who he fights you'll say he cherrypicked his next opponent

It isn't so much about how good Alvarez is as a fighter or who he has beat.
People pick Canelo over Kirkland because of how bad/overrated they feel James Kirkland is as a fighter.

Another thing, people use the excuse "well they're bringing him along slowly".
Ok, do that, but don't then tell me that a champion needs to step up in class.
They are force feeding us this kid. Better fighters have not gotten vacant titles handed to them. Lara is better, he can't get a fight with him.
He's 21. Who had all these other guys beaten at that age?
It's not about age. If he wasn't a champion I wouldn't complain about him fighting no-names in Mexico, but once you get that belt, it's time to fight real competition, not hiding it. Otherwise, it freezens the competition in the division as other fighters are less eager to take risky fights if belt is not at stake. It's just bad for boxing. If Lara was given that belt we could probably see Lara-Martirosyan,rematch with Molina, possibly unifications with Trout or Bundrage and Alvarez could've fought his superfights with Gomez,Hatton,Rhodes and Cintron just as well without any belt in line.
That's true, it's a joke. I really like Golden Boy as they're so much better for boxing fans in comparision to Top Rank, but in this one, they are shameless with great help of WBC what have to be said. First they're giving him bum from welterweight to fight for vacant 154 pound title in catchweight, then they take on Rhodes what was let's say decent first defence, after it there came club level welterweight in Gomez and just outclassed by Molina Cintron. I mean, come on... If kid wasn't read to fight at championship level then leave that f*cking belt alone for some guys who're willing to compete.
Also the way they're ducking Lara now is one of most obvious ducks in recent years along Sturm ducking Golovkin. I have a feeling that 10 more possible opponents could get injured and they won't put Canelo in there with Lara anyway.
absolutely. the thing is this: yes, Canelo is only 21. But: if he doesnt wanna fight the best then he should stay the F*** away from world title fights cause he doesnt deserve them. The dude got a title shoved up his a*s while others fought the best in the world and never even got a title shot. His title is a joke cause he fought nobody. Lara is a real champion WITHOUT a belt. Canelo is a fraud WITH a belt

I hate him cause he shouldnt have a title. Guys like Erislandy Lara, Carlos Molina or James Kirkland have beaten a lot of very tough, very good guys and they dont have a title.
they are a thousand times more deserving to have a title than Canelo
i wont argue with that
the promotional favoritism is definitely a downer in boxing IMO
but he's marketable, not sure how much the other guys are in comparison, but i can see where you're coming from
hate is a strong word, he is stimulating a lot of energy expenditure on your part... makes me wonder why.
idk, i dont mind watching the kid box, he's no mega star but i'll watch him win and lose just like most fighters
i like boxing, not boxers
