@EricRaskin: Perfect line from Larry Merchant: "Nothing will kill boxing, and nothing can save it."
Interesting words from a man who has been involved with Boxing for a long long time.
disagree. once Mayweather and Pac retire, and the Klits, boxing will officially be dead
Maybe in Germany but not here in the US. The Klitchkos are killing the heavyweigh division in terms of fan support.
Pac and Mayweather really had excellent stories, excellent matchups and excellent hype.
Both have character and personality to draw people into the sport.. If someone will carry the sport they better start being popular by now because floyd and pac are on the decline. they should land a win over these guys.. right now, i dont see anyone solid. Before DLH was gone, everybody already saw that pac and may would carry it, but right now i dont see anyone else the way I saw them before.. matchmakings of how pac elevated his status on the sport is rare to find.. and how these guys were continually matched is truly rare. like mayweather's comeback etc. I hope there is someone.. starts by now..
Man shut the fuk up with that stupid sh1t. Boxing will never die fuk head.
:firedevil
hahaha ironic that you've Dana White as your avatar..
But true boxing will never die
There'll be another huge star in no time.
Donaire, Broner, Chavez jr., Canelo, Mares, Gamboa and so on, are great for the sport and will keep die hard boxing fans entertained for years to come. But to capture the hearts of regular fans, boxing needs an international super stars like a De La Hoya, Mike Tyson, Ray Leonard, ect.
Broner will not be the one to carry the torch once Pacquiao Floyd and the brothers at Heavyweight retire. Ward deserves to be huge , he actually fights people worth mentioning.
Boxing isn't dead, but matchmaking is. I doubt the younger fighters will get the big events necessary to build their names. For example, Arum holding off on making Gamboa-Lopez. Lopez would've been better off getting destroyed by Gamboa than Salido.
Edit: Arum needs to die for the sport to move forward.
You think these two are gonna do Mayweather/Pacquiao type of PPV numbers? 1.2 mil - 1.4 mil PPV buys?
Nobody can predict the future but boxing always has and always will have a well known figurehead.
He does have a point though, who's gonna do Mayweather or Pacquiao-like PPV numbers once they are gone?
Chavez Jr and Canelo will do good with Mexican boxing fans but that's only one demographic. They only speak Spanish so they don't really cater to other boxing fans (casuals). Who are the Blacks, Asians, Whites, non Mexican Hispanics etc gonna buy PPV from?
Floyd is a well spoken American, and caters to Americans and foreigners who generally want to see him lose.
Manny speaks English and has an explosive style and caters to American styles
Boxing in its glory days didnt do pac vs mayweather numbers. So the money issue does not matter.
Pac and Mayweather were already huge stars before DLH retired
Pacquiao was known to boxing fans but had nowhere near the following he's got now until after the DLH fight.
Pac and Mayweather were already huge stars before DLH retired
Wrong. They were not on DLH's level yet. Both had their strong followings, sure, but it wasn't until they each fought Oscar that they truly became known commodities outside of the sport of boxing.
like who? he must not be born yet, because there is not one current boxer that can carry the sport
Somewhere out there is another Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Manny Pacquiao. Right now at this very moment he's training hard and laughing in the inside at your stupidity.
People said Boxing was going to die when Tyson retired then along comes RJJ.
The reason why Merchant chuckles to himself every time he hears that Boxing is dead when so and so retires is because he's heard it all before.
like who? he must not be born yet, because there is not one current boxer that can carry the sport
People said the same thing about DLH, when someone retires fans move on to the next big thing (which was Pacquiao).

Not sure if serious but You must be new to this sport.Dont you know this happens every generation.Their will be others that will carry the sport.
Poetically said, but the fact is that it's easier to lose customers than it is to gain them. Too much stupid **** has been happening in boxing (mostly for the love of money) and I don't see it headed in a positive direction at the moment, unfortunately...
