When I saw punch stats the first time, I always thought, they are generated through a scientific machine or something like that. Then I heard its basically 2 pple sitting ringside and they press a button whenever they THINK a punch connected. So basically its complete unscientific. These pple only see one angle, and this system has so many flaws, its a joke. It is also biased cause I have seen TONS OF FIGHTS where I knew the punchstats dont reflect AT ALL what happened in the ring. Basically HBO and Showtime use the CompuBox Stats as an instrument to make it look like the BS they are telling the audience (whatever fighter they are hyping) is the truth.
This is how the system should work: There should be 5 different camera angles for the fight. Now we need quite a lot pple who create the PunchStats AFTER THE ROUND HAPPENED. They look at every punch from 2 or 3 or 4 different angles and then they decide if the punch connected or not. Cause if you look at a certain time frame from different angles, you can REALLY TELL if the punch landed or not. Of course I know it may take a few minutes to have the punch stats of a certain round; BUT: If 2 or 3 pple work on only one single round and if they practice a lot, they become really good at it and I bet they could finish creating the punchstats of a 3 minute round within a few minutes. Of course we need at least 10 or 12 pple for that Compubox system cause the fight happens faster than the creation of the punchstats. This way we would get the punch stats a few minutes AFTER THE FIGHT ENDED (If enough pple work on the punch stats). And that is fine with me. Cause those punch stats would actually mean something.
Cause the punch stats system right now is a joke, a disgrace.
What do you think?
I think that system would cost a little bit money. And the HBO crew prefers that the money goes to THEMSELVES instead of being used for a new compubox system.
Than, like another poster said, only announce the stats every 4 rounds or something, so they can have someone watch tape and get an accurate number of punches thrown and landed.
Again they dont give a crap if its exactly correct, it is used as an entertainment tool for the masses watching the fight
It is NOT an official punch landed stat, simply an estimation.
ANd i think the other poster meant do it every 4 rounds as not to influence our personal scorecards every round if we're scoring the fight
The point of compubox is to have an up to the second update of punches during the broadcast, not to satisfy posters on forums after the fight

No the point is to have statistics on punches thrown and landed, you can then use that as a tool to analyze the fight. It doesn't have to be up to the second. I think it'd be better if they only gave the punch stats every 4 rds.
Yes but those stats shouldnt go towards how you judged the round. I always get pissed off when they show in round punch stats cuz i know it sometimes influences my score
But theres a reason judges dont see those numbers
put the fighters in gimp suits with sensors all over em!!!!!
pac lost just get the f-uck over it
I have to disappoint you, not every thread is about pac and mayweather.

whats the sense of having two guys sitting ringside pressing buttons while watching the fight, as if they were playing a computer game. imagine you and me sitting ringside and doing the punchstats. the result would be full of sh't. just like its full of sh't when these 2 HBO guys do it. if you see only one angle of a punch, then in 80 % of the cases, you cant say if it connected or not just cause you didnt see the right angle. or it was too fast. so, basically if the result of the punch stats HAS TO BE a big pile of crap, why even showing it in the broadcast? Lampley presents those punch stats each and everytime as if it was the truth sent from God himself. while in reality its a big pile of crap
Boxing needs to go high tech. What they need is to implant the gloves with accelerometers and contact detection. Boxers will whine about the gloves feeling different. But I'm sure they can make it in a way to be unintrusive.
They can also set up special cameras to do hand and body tracking like with XBox Kinect. Would make things interesting. Then they can reuse the data to make videos more realistic. :)
I think they should do away with CompuBox stats during the fights, just get rid of it. After the fight is over, have a couple go in a watch the fight in slow motion when unches are thrown and landed, than release the official numbers a day after the fight. That's what I'd do.

With all the technology that exists today you would think that computers would be much more capable than a person to accurately track punch stats. Especially when you have things on the market such as the Xbox Kinect.
bro, I sh't on Ledermans scorecard. And do you think anybody wants to see an "unofficial way to measure punches mostly for entertainment"? hell no. I want punch stats that mean something. I dont want complete BullSh't punch stats which are created by a Bullsh't system and dont mean ANYTHING.
Then go count the punches yourself.
Compubox is not official in any way of form, neither does it have any affect on the scoring of the fight.
It is simply an attempt to get the approximate numbers of punches, thats it
they would never release accurate punch stats the next day if they were TOTALLY DIFFERENT from the "live" compubox system. Cause that would make HBO look so stupid its unreal. That would make the whole punch stats of any fight in the last 10 years or so look totally ridiculous.
I just saying it would be the best way to record fighter stats. I'm sure the majority of fans would prefer this way over what we have now.
not true. here is how it works:

I quote:
I stand corrected but still that "they have to all push the same button within a split second" stuff is for the olympics.

In real time there will always be mistakes even the Olympic system isn't that great and they miss punches.
Yes stats are useless if they are not accurate and the media and fans are using them as facts now.

Compubox is as legit as Ledermans scorecard
When will people realize it is an unofficial way to measure punches mostly for entertainment

Exactly. Compu box can never be totally accurate in real time.
you think they would release official numbers the next day which would prove that the "live" compubox system is complete and utter crap?
