I can't post in that thread because the TS has me on ignore, but I'm wondering what active trainers can be considered great? If we're speaking on terms of trainers that have created a world class fighter and not just trained an ALREADY world class fighter, one who immediate comes to mind is Nacho Beristain. He's created a who stable of World Champions through out his career. But who else?
Roach is a good trainer, not great but good. There are hardly any great trainers around at all though. There are only a few great old school trainers like Steward and nacho around and even fewer top notch up and coming trainers like hunter and mccracken.
I asked that guy and he said Brother Naz, Uncle Rog, Nacho and Manny Steward LOL.
All are great, but so is Roach then.
They all have flaws.
Uncle only has Floyd and does train a bunch of people.
Every trainer has holes.
I agree that even the "great" trainers have flaws. You just don't usually see a so called "great" trainer that has as many flaws as Freddie Roach. I have already pointed out at least 5. A great trainer should at least be able to teach his boxers basic defence and how to throw accurate combinations. All of Roach's fighters have very poor defence and are also very sloppy and can't adjust. It makes me sick that this guy isn't half as good of a trainer as Nacho Beristain and Roger Mayweather yet he gets two or three times as much credit. If he didn't have parkinsons syndrome and wasn't the biggest attention whore in the sport then I highly doubt that he would be getting the level of attention that he is getting.

Roach is a media diva, atention seeker, trash talker.
Emmanual Steward is the ATG boxing trainer still alive.
a great trainer has had many decent fighters under his wing. developing some from childhood. making them not only a better fighter but a better person. how many fighters has roach made great?
The two main areas I look for in a good trainer is A) Game Plan B) Psychical Preparation
Game Plan.
I think the problem is that when watching 24/7 and the corner in a fight we do not see or always hear what strategies and game plans/changes are being made for their opponent. What do we do when something isn't working.
Although different I used to compete and train karate, but now I coach and the mark of a good coach is what they do when things go bad and having a game plan when **** is going wrong. Having a plan B,C and sometimes D. No saying try harder, punch more/harder, get after him and other cliches.
There have been many fights when the a change of tactics help a fighter win a match he was down in.
Physical Preparation
For example when Nacho was preparing JMM for a WW fight he did alot of things wrong for gaining weight and preparation. Then when he fought Pac you can see how much physically stronger and fitter. I am not talking about performance I am talking about preparation.
Being physically prepared for a pressure in close fighter is different from a counter puncher, or a distant fighter.
yeah I do.
Bro I really hope you don't talk like this in real life.
You sound like the type of dude that will fix my transmission, rig up my cable, and give me some bootleg dvd's.........all for a crack rock and a fish dinner
Fish is high class my friend. I would do all that for less.
You would know what a crackhead sounds like, now wouldn't you?
yeah I do.

LOL .. as always, you have nothing to offer. Rattling off a list of names that float your boat without any substance is just wasting space. Its your right to do it, and its my right to call it crap.
We all know that Roach is overrated and it has nothing to do with Floyd. That's just a veil you hide behind because you have little else to offer.
I've written the same about Emmanuel Steward and Nazim Richardson right on this very forum and other forums.
Not everyone shows up here to worship fighters. And not every assertion has to do with an agenda.
That's just how you're accustomed to operating.
Instead of attacking other posters as a way of asserting your own opinions why not just let your statements stand on their own merits?
We all know why, peasant.
Dude you sound like a crack head outside a liquor store.
My post was simple and to the point.
Freddie Roach aggressively chased after a De La Hoya fight. Not Pacquiao, not Arum, it was Freddie Roach.
Roach insulted DLH after DLH's face looked pretty banged up against light hitting Steve Forbes at 150lbs. Roach says DLH can't pull the trigger anymore, he's old, and that Pacquiao would beat him. When the fight was signed and training camp started, Roach and Ariza said DLH was gasping for his breath after running and Ariza said DLH will be weight drained. This is what Roach was banking on but every one thought Roach was crazy. Everyone underestimated Roach the promoter/matchmaker.
The catchweight of 145 vs Cotto, after Cotto had just seemed to have lost to Clottey, that was Roach's idea too. The Margarito fight was more of Arum's idea, the 150lbs weight was Roach and Pac's idea.
Freddie Roach is a very intelligent coach, he's behind a lot more than just pads for Manny. The guy is a great matchmaker and he deserves his props.
Same for Khan, when Khan needed some rebuilding after Prescott. Who did they turn to? Freddie Roach the matchmaking genius. Old Barrera, light hitting Kotelnik, light hitting Salita, a big name but featherfist in Malignaggi. All of a sudden "Freddie Roach guidance and Alex Ariza's strength and conditioning has made Amir Khan's chin stronger", :lol1:
Then comes Maidana, Team Khan beat him but go through a big scare and haven't fought a big puncher since. Only a faded Judah.
I dislike Roach but he is one of the best in the business and a HOF trainer.
If you notice, most of the people calling him overrated are Floyd fans. If Roger was getting the accolades then you would have these same posters putting him up there with guys like Futch, Cus, etc.
IMO the top trainers in boxing right now are:
Freddy Roach, Nacho Beristein, Nazim Richardson, Robert Garcia, Miguel Diaz, and Ronnie Shields.
I really don't think any are better than the others, but I put those guys in the elite class of trainers today.
Roger Mayweather. Cus D'mato. Naseem Richardson. Joel Diaz. Nacho Beristain.
/thread.
What exactly makes Roger "great"? Nas? What makes them great? Having one fighter who accomplishes great things doesn't make you a great trainer. One of the reasons I feel Roach isn't a great trainer.
The last time I checked Khan, PAC and linares all looked bad in there last fights. If you want to be technical Roach didn't discover or bring Manny up from the minors. Manny was bought to America and basically handed to roach around about the same time Mayweather was handed to Uncle Roger.Manny has been beaten by Morrales, Marquez IMO and has avoided, Soto, Guzman and a host of tough fights at 140. Has roach made Pacquaio better I say yes from the one handed fighter to a offensive world wind.
My favorite trainers right now are as follows.
ROGER MAYWEATHER
FLOYD MAYWEATHER
NACHO BERSTEIN
EMMANUEL STEWART
BUDDY MCGIRT
FREDDIE ROACH
CUNNINGHAM ONLY PROBLEM IS HE HAS MORE HEART AND FIGHT THAN HIS FIGHTER.
When did I say Roach was a great trainer? In fact, I said he WASN'T. But the dude who is claiming Roach wasnt great went ahead and claimed Roger was. That doesn't make sense. Roger's only great fighter is Floyd.

Freddie Roach is a great adviser/matchmaker/negotiator. People have to understand, that's what makes a great trainer in today's boxing era. Intelligence, no one can deny Freddie is smart with his requests of opponents from the promoters and fighters.
this ^^^ is one of the best and most honest/informed answers on this topic.
Yet it didn't answer the Q.
lol it was just some barely concealed hate. I don't think Roach has much to do with who Pacquiao fights, you hear him talk about one potential opponent and Arum announces they're looking at some other guy for Pac to fight. He's just a boxing coach.
I agree that the father and son relationship matters because that is where you try harder for each other. Floyd Senior didn't respect Hatton and came in late etc... but Roach cares for Pac, even waking him up. After watching his documentary, it was clear he didn't care for say, his PA, but when it came to Pac, he was more sincere. Now, to get that feeling, you need a lot of time together, and that is where it becomes difficult.
But yes, I would like to know who is considered a great trainer, a name, not so hard to give really, if Roach is not considered one.
Sr was just pretty selfish, it was all about him not the fighter. I guess that's why he has issues with his family. Floyd did say everyone he ever trained left him.

Nike's Air Jordans
Adidas's Originals Gazelle
Newton's Gravity
Asic's GEL-Nimbus
Some great trainers, and in this category Roach can't be considered great.
I admire Robert Garcia, Virgil Hunter, Nacho, Bradley Trainer Diaz, I even like Adam Booth
truly great trainers build fighters from the GROUND UP, they don't just piggy back off of a talented fighter trying to get his career back on track after a loss, nothing wrong with reviving fighters careers at all but taking young fighters and helping them get to the Top is WAY MORE IMPRESSIVE!
fans think you have to train a team of fighters to become a great Trainer, that is FAR FROM THE TRUTH
