the thread title is "if Cotto fought Pac the way he did floyd."
I know but I was basically putting it in prospective that when he fought Pac he fought him with the "you can't hurt me I'm going to bully you" reckless mentality I think when he fought floyd he fought him with a "I will pressure you but keep my defense tight and pick my shots mentality".
I wouldn't say Manny is better in general, there is only one element of Pac's style that is the issue, but it will spell doom every time they fight; that's the in and out movement of Manny.
That is true at the time...but Pacquiao has gotten acclimated with his weight now and 154 though "doable" is still unnatural for him to fight even now. But, the main thing was timing - Pacquiao was just coming from 135/140 at the time and so Cotto agreed to a catchweight of 145, which is really logical.
Cotto was hungry for the prime time again and "belittled" Pacquiao (the same way DLH did when he challenged Pac on a catchweight fight).
Cotto initially declined fighting at a weight below 147, he said he's going to defend his title where he won it. He was then threatened to be stripped and shortly after that agreed to the catchweight. You're making it sound like it was something Cotto happily agreed to. Pacquiao was not just coming from 135. He already had a fight against De La Hoya at 147 and Hatton at 140, and he was already entering the ring at 147 as low as his Super Featherweight days.
Cotto was the underdog going in against Pacquiao, and he was the one being belittled by every one. I personally predicted Cotto would get stopped in the mid rounds, but him running away in the last 5 rounds, that didn't happen.
Mayweather is a tactical and defensive fighter. It gave Cotto the chance to think about his next move. Mayweather doesn't throw a lot of punches either. But although given the chance to actually fight intelligent and think, he still couldn't out think Floyd.
Against Pacquiao he wouldn't be able to fight like that because he would have 60-90 punches being throw at him, rather than 40-70 from Mayweather. If you notice also, Cotto threw less punches against Mayweather than he did against Pacquiao.
Against Mayweather, Cotto was having rounds where he threw as little as 28, 32, 33, 36, etc. While against Pacquiao, throughout the first 7 rounds, Cotto was throwing 55-75 a round. Which shows Cotto was a lot more active against Pacquiao, because of Pacquiao's style, and because of all the openings Pacquiao gave him. Cotto also landed at an almost 10% higher rate on Pacquiao, than he did against Mayweather. With 30% landed on Pac, 21% landed on Floyd. Again pointing to the Floyd-Cotto fight being more tactical, despite appearing like it was a lot of action.
One thing is for sure, if this "new" Pacquiao that we saw against Marquez and Mosley, being more tactical and trying to box, not being as aggressive anymore, if he fights like that with Cotto at 154, it would be a closer fight than the first time at the 145 catchweight.
Roach and Manny wanted no part of Miguel Cotto @ 154. Roach said in an interview that at 154 Cotto was too strong and could really hurt Manny and he wouldnt risk it.
So give mayweather props for going up to Cottos weight class.
@154 Cotto beats Manny.
Roach is right but this also goes to every fighter. Floyd will never fight Marinez at 160 or above, you may wonder why? Obviously for the same reason Roach was telling you. Floyd would be too small for 160 just like Pac at 154.

... could he have won?
That's what Cotto did in the early mid-rounds and see what happened. Cotto should "box" Pacquiao and use the ring. Pacquiao loves to go toe-to-toe and thus it would obviously go on Pacquiao's favor.
Had Cotto stucked with his early 1st and 2nd round plan of jabbing and keeping Pacquiao at bay and being patient, he could have gone to distance and made Pacquiao work harder instead of easier. But at the time, Cotto's stamina is suspicious - only in his last fight against Mayweather did he train with lots of cardio because his Cuban trainer thought of him being able to just dog Mayweather all night long, and he did...he was in front of Mayweather and Mayweather dared Cotto to fight him up close.
I believe if Cotto had Pedro Diaz in his corner and not that one guy who had no clue what he was doing, was not weight drained, and put together a good strategy he couldve definitely beaten pac. I still think Pac is severely over rated and JMM proved that. His speed and power are phenomenal, but his strategy in any fight is to maul 'em to death. I dont see him really having anything else besides that speed and power. Granted, who needs a good jab or body punching when youre as fast and strong as he is, but he doesnt have much ring intelligence IMO. His career has been a textbook example of matching him with the best type of fighters to get destroyed. I have floyd in #1, Cotto #2, many other guys, then Pac. But i like him as a person if that counts as any kudos haha
The FACT that Manny wants no part of Cotto at 154 says it all. You can all talk a good fight on pacs behalf, saying Cotto gets Hattoned and whatnot. Truth is pac is nowhere near as confident as you guys.
That logic is stupid, u have to understand cotto fought that way because if he would have tried to box Floyd he would have lost even worse.. I highly doubt he would use the same approach fighting Manny with the trainer he has now, and I look at it like this if Floyds straight right couldn't get in which is the best in the game I bet mannys straight left wouldn't be able to get in this time around

pac would beat him even worse. cotto was aggressive with floyd and engaged him. that game plan would favor pac.

All I have to say is this Cotto now has a chance for a few reasons, I have been watching Cotto fight for a longtime and his defense never looked as good as it did in the floyd fight..I doubt he would be stupid to let Manny get the weight advantage again, and seeing as how he knows manny can hurt him now he wouldn't try and slug it out as much,,,,
No, actually if Cotto fought Pac rounds 1-5, the way he fought Pac rounds 6-12, he could've won. Sticking and moving.
He fought Floyd the way he fought Pac 1-5 and Pac made him run the rest of the fight for doing so. He made Cotto pay.
Cotto at 145lbs was faster when he fought Manny, yes Cotto had some good moments when he was moving around the first 4 rounds, but still Manny was able to tag Miguel with hard punches during those early rounds, that's why he resorted to covered up more... The big difference with the Floyd fight was Migue'sl the one doing the aggression...
No its based on your interpretation as a fanboy. Don't you find it interesting how everything you say always mysteriously puts Floyd in the best light. You even invent a group of people to justify yourself. Anyone who disagrees clearly a pac fan boy. rationalizing bro. look it up fan girl cheerleader groupie. that is what you are. I say all that to say this, Man up pu$sy!
This has nothing to do with Floyd its about Pacs CWs , if want to back your big mouth and debate weight with me , lets go sunshine you need an education ?
Floyd isnt even a real offensive fighter and when he opened up he was bustin Cotto up and simply beating him up.image Manny thats his game if Cotto fights him in that fashion he will need a face lift
