Cotto had a great attack/approach against Floyd...
Just needed higher volume punching and
implementation of defense or the illusion of defense
How bout the uppercut? Cotto's been shown to have a pretty sneaky one, anyone think it may have helped when he was close on the inside? And yea Cotto was slipping punches and looked good
Exactly! I kept yelling at Cotto through the TV to throw the right, especially the right upper cut. Every time Cotto would get Floyd in a corner or on the ropes you could see him trying to load up with the left.
Maybe, but Mayweather adjusts and he was leaning to the right because of Cottos strong left side.
Only a couple things Cotto could have done better, better stamina in the late rounds. I agree had he picked it up in the 9th he may have been able to keep Floyd on the run the whole night. Also, what mildly surprised me and only becasue I had often wondered about this was that Cotto was able to be effective on the back foot. Once he made Floyd come forward he was countering him with the left pretty much at will and slipping almost all of his shots. Had his trainer picked up on that and had him continue with that strategy he may have been able to save energy for a late rounds assault and still put a lot of rounds and damage on Floyd's ass.
Great fight though (outside of Floyd not ending up in a pile of his own drool on the canvas, punk ass sucka!)
His lack of an above average right hand hurt him in this fight, among other things. That is the trade-off of being a converted southpaw like he is, although it wasn't too much of a disadvantage as his jab was very effective. He did just about everything anyone's asked a guy to do against Mayweather...came forward, jabbed his way in, went to the body, hit him anywhere, maintain defense, etc.....even with a right hand it still would have been an uphill battle.
But if he had one...and was able to follow up after jabbing Floyd's head into certain positions, he might have been able to do the type of damage that would stop Floyd from seizing whatever momentum you think you're gaining.

cotto's defense is leaky but he always shows flashes of being good defensively. look at the end of the 9th. he dodged all floyd's shots. he had pretty good defense overall in that fight but he can never keep it up.
how do you guys think he would have done if he was more of a 2 handed fighter at the expense of having his great jab?
Possibly better. especially if his right hands connected, which is very very difficult to do against floyd, BUT it also causes floyd to think that much more. You know its very hard to determine any means that would beat Floyd, theres just too many variables.
If I could say anything about what we saw regarding Floyd its that we havent really found a true blueprint to beat him yet. IMO Castillo had the potential and gameplan to beat a young May but now with experience he just may have all the skill and boxing intellect to beat anyone within the next two to three years

Very good anlysis. I also feel that he needed to outwork floyd on the inside. if you drag floyd into an inside fight youd better be ready to outwork him or its ineffective to the judges. Cotto needed to let his right hand fly and connect more from the outside.
I got a feeling had Cotto upped his workrate early he wouldn't have seen the 12th to me he seemed OK with giving up the early rounds and then picked it up some in the mid rounds but ended up eating lots rights and uppercuts. by the championship rounds he was pretty much done
Floyd reverted back to boxing mode for 9-12. Cotto being unable to cutoff the ring when faced with Mayweather's superior and brilliant footwork is what caused him to lose all of those rounds.
I think in the 9th, Floyd looked really vulnerable and Cotto not picking up the steam allowed Floyd to then do what he needed to do in the 10th-12th to get the win.

Cotto was was hurt couple of times in those rounds and about to get KO'd in the 12th

Mayweather landed 26% of his punches. He's a career 46% accurate puncher
Diaz has turned Cotto into Pernell overnight [/sarcasm to those who can't discern it\, so when looking at last saturday, defense was certainly not his issue. Volume of punches, especially when he had Mayweather reeling after the 8th is what doomed him.
