I thought it was weird that a NASCAR driver was #1 and that Manny had never made this list before. Then I actually read the article and saw it was from a survey of 1100 people and it made much more sense. 3 NASCAR drivers last year and 2 this year. I'd be willing to guess this extensive research to discover the most "influential athletes in america" was conducted in a tri-county area of North Carolina. You do know that when they do this polls they consider various factors other than the vote of 1100 people? Internet search, marketability, media coverage, etc? If they determine that 1100 were sufficient as sample it is because of guidelines and they can justify it. Also they consider trends. It is not as simple as you put it there.

Doesn't matter if Manny is not the most skilled boxer ever (b/c he is not), its his fighting spirit that people like/love. Even if he loses in his last fights, he will only lose his "fad" fans. His resume is very respectable and will be remembered.
