What a crappy fight. Why not Beltran Jr???
At least Broner is fighting 2 more times this year, one that's sure to be Escobedo. Still, a s**t fight for sure.
Good points being made by some posters on both side of the argument here.
Broner vs Sykes, my opinion of it is more to do with the principal of the issue to me than that exact fight.
For Broner, if he plans to fight 4 times this year, and wants an easy touch for the 2nd of the year, I honestly don't have a problem with it.
Maybe HBO does have an interest in "building the fighter." But my sense it's more of the promoter/manager leveraging its stars against the network. Haymon and Arum can get HBO/Showtime/whoever to take deals on lesser fights/fighters for a handshake/wink deal for their bigger fighters(pacquiao/mayweather/etc).
Like I said at the beginning I am just tired of HBO completely mismanaging their fights budget to "showcase" fighters, after the huge bungle they had last year. The screwed up so bad giving out big money to crap fights, that they literally had no money to pay for Bernard Hopkins vs Dawson in October, which was an absolute meaningful fight. Instead we had, Chavez vs Zbik, Canelo vs Rhodes, Paul Williams(off a loss) vs Lara etc etc. When I look back on HBO 2011, with out looking over there schedule, I can remember 2-3 fights that REALLY mattered. And thats a shame, thats not what I pay for. There were more than 2-3 really important fights on the network, but since they are so few in far between I cant think of more examples.
Well obviously they can do what they wish I'm just saying its a waste of their place in boxing to be so into making names over making good fights with a matchup like this. I think HBO would be better off if they just put the best fights on TV & left the star making to the fans, luck or the promoter.
HBO's thing has always been building stars.
There are a couple ways to do it, one is great fights that one is obvious but another way is to allow a guy to look good because people hardly know the opposition anyway and because not every fight can be great. A guy they build can either make it or they can fall on their face but if the guy falls on their face all that building is not wasted because they can shift to the guy that made their man fall.
HBO is what it is, I don't get stressed about what they do and enjoy any boxing.
his KO record should have indicated that it wasn't though
There are a ton of upcoming guys with alot of KO's.
Ortiz should have won it no problem if he had any heart and wasnt a quiter
that's understandable but i don't want to see mismatches on HBO he can do his little useless tune ups on ESPN
shhiiet I'm just relieved it's not the main event.
"Stay busy propositions" shouldn't be on HBO.
Why not if HBO has an interest in a guy, it is their prerogitive to show him in fights he can look good because their audience will want to see him again.
Maidana? he was never a tune up you dumb fack
I'm just trying to make your ridiculous comparison work. Broner is a nobody at this point, stop acting like you don't know how this game works. They are trying to build a fighter
all these stars FLOPPED except gamboa and others
I disagree, all those guys had moments and great fights. Boxing has a high washout rate very few have longevity~
So you give them no credit for the things that work out but all the fault for things that don't~ how quaint.
Got to always look for the next big thing~ your method leads to nothing new and becoming stale
You have become a garbage poster
Yea by accident.
Pay for results, not potential. simple as that

Yea they were trying to build Berto, and you know what they got a great fight~ then they got another big fight based off the guy he lost to fighting a megastar~ now another network thought enough of both guys to pay big money for a rematch
Don't focus on the trees focus on the forrest~
Yea by accident.

HBO does have a pretty good track record when it comes to building stars~ no they don't hit everytime but anybody who reaches the top got there through HBO
define ''star'' star as in donaire, gamboa, lopez? or star as in Floyd,Oscar,Manny?
mebbe u should focus on the word "potential" instead of the word star. hes not a star yet, but he very well could be in the future and thats what hbo is banking on whether rightly or wrongly.
Ortiz didn't get a tune up when he fought berto, Mosely moved from LW to fight Oscar at WW, Duran moved to WW from LW for leonard why the fucc this diva gets special treatment? he's not even a big draw......he fights below LW for gods sake
From Broner to Duran, that's quite the leap.
