Im too tired to make a poll but what do you think it was more of? Weight issues/drained, finally didnt have a huge size advantage to make him look better then what he really is, style matchup, new nutritionist/diet, overlooking the opponent, unmotivated after Gamboa fallout, or just overrated?
Weight is the excuses people will use, but Rios will always look BAD against GOOD BOXERS...he is all Power and nothing in between, it is basically KO OR NOTHING that is just his style
while that makes for a very exciting style to some fans, it is a style that can easily be exploited by any skill fighter, especially one with Skills and Good Defense
True but he was already blowing up, so they brought in the guy to do something different.
If a guys body can't take cutting that low anymore not much a nutritionist can do.
I will say though whenever a guy hires a new nutritionist, they tend to look worse but still I just take that as the guys aren't miracle workers.
It could have been a factor but I am uncertain, the other 6 all certainly played a role.
Agreed. Ive seen alot of fighters wait too long. Everyone assumed Rios was going to look better once he moved up but if you wait too long then it doesnt matter. Youve cause some permanent, irreversible damage.
Forget this fight, he shouldve moved up like 4 fights ago. If he tries to move up now, he probably still wont look the same as he wouldve looked had he done it 4 or 5 fights ago. Its going to take a toll
What won Abril the fight was the shoulder roll thing he did when Rios got close, which was just as effective as holding, but legal.
This right here. Up until round 12, Rios landed literally no punches through the shoulder roll. It was masterfully executed.
Overall he was up against a style he just could not figure out. Abril deserves all the credit in the world for his game plan and conditioning.
but the point is that sometimes change isnt good. I didnt mean he did a bad job as far as losing weight or anything. I meant moreso maybe the new stuff didnt agree with Rios. Maybe the new diet actually made him weaker or whatever

Style matchup without a doubt.
Rios definitely tried imposing his will, he tried to hit anything he could hit. Abril just boxed beautifully, uses his legs, great defense on the inside and good use of the jab... Abrils defense really made 90% of Rios' shots ineffective, and at long range he was a sitting duck.
This. Also Rios is flatfooted and needs to be in one spot to really sit down on his punches and throw the power combos he likes. If you're constantly getting your shots off and turning him and making him have to get reset it takes away alot of his game. Can't really cut off the ring, isn't much of a boxer from the outside and was being smothered inside along with a very effective defense by Abril on the inside which Reed mentioned.
Quintana Williams I Paul only averaged around 50 punches per round for a similar reason.
All of the above, or at least a good 5 or 6 of those.
I just don't know if I would blame the nutritionist/diet, there is only so much that guy can do he isn't a miracle worker.
