Floyd Mayweather is arguably one of the biggest draws in boxing history, expecially in recent era's. His PPV sales per fight is second only to Mike Tyson, and is compared to Pacquiao and De La Hoya in terms of PPV sales all the time.
He isn't that all out exciting and explosive fighter like Tyson or Pacquiao, and he isn't a fighter that is loved by a huge loyal fan base like Oscar De La Hoya, the biggest Mexican-American star in recent time, was. Or like Manny Pacquiao, who's beloved by his entire country till the end, no matter what.
He is one of the most gifted fighters, one of the most controversial as well.
What would you pick as the mian reason to why Floyd is such a huge draw???
Are you talking about after the first fight? Is so, why didn't he rematch JMM immediately?
They tried very hard for an immediate rematch, but Beristain, I think, persuaded Marquez to demand $1.5 mil. I remember Beristain saying "we won't fight for a cent less". This was about 3 times his previous purse and I think was even more than Pacquiao was getting. There was a lot of analyst talk about that and it dragged on for a little while. So the fight was off. I think I have the basic facts correct.
By the way, wanting to ask, I always thought that Managua was in Nicargua. There is even a song with the words......."Managua Nicaragua is a wonderful place"....The only words I remember.
all of the above EXCEPT his pure boxing skills. why do you think he took on the bad guy persona? because being a talented boxer with his style of fighting wasn't enough.
Wright wanted 50/50 all along. Had nothing to do with switching money, he turned down the fight. It is what it is, he has done this his whole career.
Floyd agreed to 50/50 then changed the split....sound familiar? :lol1:
Honestly, I've never understood it. He's not one of the more entertaining fighters in the sport, he isn't in competitive fights, he isn't particularly good at trash talk, I really don't get it. With the controversy he often generates, I could understand being a good PPV draw, but not the monster PPV draw he is.
Don't underestimate the Pacquaio factor. Both have dangled that carrot of the superfight to raise their own profile. No coincidence that both are doing big numbers at the same time, despite both being around for years.
Still, I find it pretty remarkable that Floyd does big numbers. I know why the hardcores are interested - we are watching an ATG in his last few fights. But for the casuals? His fights are hardly entertaining - he's either pitching shut-outs or pulling sh*t like the Ortiz fight.
And it's not like he's facing huge threats either. Say what you want abou DLH but he fought some great fighters.
If I was in America, I absolutely would not pay for another Floyd fight after the Ortiz farce. That, and the fact that his whole career right now just feels like a cash-grab, a way to top of his bank balance, just turns me off completely.
Before Mayweather vs Pacquiao was mentioned, Mayweather had already participated in the highest selling HBO PPV of all time, and the richest fight of all time. And then he preceded to sell another 900k+ HBO PPV's with Hatton in the same year, also selling 1.6Million UK PPV buys in Sky Sports, breaking the previous record of 750k UK PPV's, for Lewis-Tyson. Making Mayweather-Hatton the #1 selling Sky Sports PPV, in front of Lewis-Tyson and Tyson-Bruno. 2007 is HBO's highest selling year. So Mayweather was in record-breaking fights well before Pacquiao came in to the picture.
Don't get me wrong, it takes two, and Floyd certainly didn't do those numbers by himself. The 1.6Million PPV's for Sky with Hatton, had a lot to do with Hatton. But unfortunately, those numbers could not be repeated when Hatton fought Pacquiao, or when Hatton fought any one else before Floyd.
:lol1: You don't offer someone their highest purse if you're declining a fight.
Isn't that your line about Naz and Marquez? You're a walking double standard dude, it's pathetic.
Naz did not offer Marquez a fight and then switch the money at the last second. Which is what Floyd did to Winky and is currently doing to Pacquiao. Its a clever tactic cos tards like you buy into it.
Wright still declined
He declined when Floyd changed the terms of the agreement. Which really means Floyd declined. It was a publicity stunt. Seems a pattern for Floyd.
In my opinion, its a combination of his contraversial outspoken behavior along with the majority of the boxing world wanting to see him lose. Truth is, outside of the boxing purists, many dont find Floyd's defensive fighting style entertaining. He's a huge draw because he's created so much hate for himself that the casual masses tune in to see who's going to beat him and see the look on his face when/if it does happen. This is not to say that many dont appreciate his mastery in the ring. What i'm saying is, this is not the main reason he's such a huge draw.
Floyds the biggest draw in boxing because Pact@rd Nation is terrified of him. Manny doesnt get this kind of attention because Floyd fans see Manny as an inferior boxer in every shape and form of the sport.
I literally laughed at "His aura of invincibility, him being unbeaten."
There is no "aura of invincibility" with Floyd. He already lost to Oscar and Castillo and he struggled with Hatton, Mosley, and Judah. The plain and simple truth is that people tune in to see Floyd lose. He's built a persona on being the biggest douche rocket in the sport of boxing, because he knows his fighting style alone would draw little to no fans. His racist rants, sucker punching and such only hurt his reputation but he seems to thrive on these type of things. Cotto will bully him and Pac would end his career in a few rounds.
To put it plain and simple... When Pac is talked about, they are saying good things.
When Floyd is talked about, they are saying bad things.
I get you but to a lot of people they think he's undefeated so he'll keep winning, but if he fights a good enough fighter like Pacquiao he could lose. Pacquiao is popular for a lot of reasons being a very exciting excellent fighter who is humble and respectful
Speaking in generally.
Now with the whole Floyd-Winky thing. I know Winky disagreed with the money he wanted 50/50 that's what Winky wanted. I think Floyd was getting 2 or 3mil more than Winky don't remember. Winky and some fans believed that it was a PR stunt by Floyd and Arum. And, if they were really serious they would do the 50/50.
Not sue if it was at a catch-weight. But, I do remember that Gary Shaw said that Floyd side asked for a next day re-hydration clause. But, Arum nor Floyd ever admitted to such to my knowledge. And, Winky himself didn't ever confirm that either. His whole thing was the money split. Which was the same problem he had with Taylor, Margarito, and Oscar.
I think Oscar offered him 6mil and he wanted Tito like money...Margarito offered like 4 or 5mil and he wanted the 8mil that they offered Floyd. I think he wanted a 50/50 JT don't remember just remember he didn't like the split.
Yep I remember Arum/Floyd doing the old bait and switch.
So Winky Wright turned down Floyd or are you just speaking generally?
you know why chicken mayweather wont fight fighter of decade manny pacquiao? because manny pacquiao have better defense than winky and much superer a maximum power in his punch
This is how I feel as well at times as well :lol1:
Tired of giving out links to people who don't follow shit.
So Winky Wright turned down Floyd or are you just speaking generally?
Cause he is the best fighter on the planet...
/Thread
