All he does is fight tune ups and pacquiao. How many tune ups does this guy need? He fought that Ramos guy, then pac, now this european bum, then hes fighting Gesta after..... like come on, i thought this guy was a warrior

JMM is a boss.
Im mostly mad about it since i just heard in july hes fighting Gesta, when in reality it should be Rios
That's one of the best fights that could be made. Marquez-Rios. Would be awesome to see Marquez pull of a win against a defensively flawed, but big and relentless, tough chinned, #1 ranked and undefeated Brandon Rios at this point of his career.
By the time JMM-Diaz was signed. Campbell had already signed to face his mandatory in Funeka. When JMM chose to fight Diaz, Campbell and Funeka were not available.
Diaz was the best possible available opponent. Was highly rank. Only 2 LW's at the time had a case to be ranked ahead of him(JMM and Nate). 1 of them was already busy.
At that specific time there was no better fighter at 135 to fight.
That was a good fight. I don't anyone should complain about that one.
If you say so. I guess I just don't rate Juan Diaz as a great win.
Whether he was (default) the best available contender or not
So he was no1 by default? Funeka would've been a better fight. Joan Guzman. Linares?
Juan Diaz is crap and tailor made for JMM. He fought him cos they were both GBP and he was the biggest name. Be real about it.
He didn't fight guys that were tune-ups but he didnt always fight the best. And now hes fighting bums either side of Pacquio. I think the criticism is deserved and Im a massive fan of JMM
You're just arguing for the sake of arguing now. Linares wasn't at LW, Funeka was coming off a loss to Campbell or had already signed on to fight Campbell(and missed weight), and Joan Guzman had just weighed in at like 157 for a LW fight against Campbell.
There was no better fight at LW, end of discussion. You were just never high on Diaz and that's fine I hear you there...but it was still the best fight to be made.
Diaz was always sh1t to me. How was he no1 challenger? He lost to Campbell. I dont think the fight was that relevant, it was just the lightweight champ taking on an OK contender, there were probably better fights to be made.
Katsidis got outboxed by Diaz ffs. I dont really care that he beat Mitchell and Escebedo (who?). Its just another OK fight.
I dont think there should be any excuse for the two bums.
Juan Manuel Marquez vs Juan Diaz was The Ring 135 Champion vs The Ring 135 #1 ranked fighter. There was no better fight to be made.
Marquez vs Diaz in 2009 was exactly what Marquez vs Rios would be right now, the old man Ring Champion vs a young Mexican #1 ranked LW.
There was no better fight to be made.
Well, you're probably the only one that thinks that. The Diaz fight was Campbell's last at 135....he lost his belts on the scale against Funeka. So yes, Diaz was the number one contender and it was unequivocably the best fight to be made at LW.
The Diaz win is a very, very good win.
The Katsidis win was a solid win, nothing great. But they weren't tuneups and it does nothing to disprove that from 2007 until he fought Likar Ramos, he didn't fight one guy that could be considered a tuneup. And there were some big, grueling fights in that stretch.

And Diaz 2 while a bit of a soft touch, I agree, is far from a tuneup. If THAT'S the closest thing to a tuneup that he had from March 2008 to March 2011, that's a damn good run.
His tough run really started in 2007 if you think about it. He fought Rocky Juarez when he was still a fairly respectable top fighter. And you know the Barrera fight was very close, Barrera was a top fighter, one of the best FW's at the time. Barrera had racked up some pretty good wins, including a great win in 2004 against Morales before Morales even beat Pacquiao. Basically from 2004 up to Marquez in 2007, MAB hadn't lost a fight, Marquez stopped that streak. So really, his tough run started in 2007 to present. People just wanna say that he's feeding off Pacquiao, but the guy has some solid and great wins in his resume starting from 07. And it would have been since 2006, if he hadn't been clearly robbed against Chris John. That's a loooooong run. He doesn't get enough credit, it's unfair to just say he's living off of Pacquiaoo's name.
Marquez has stopped a lot of streaks, small streaks and long streaks, from top fighters to solid fighters. And really Pacquiao's streak of 15 straight wins shouldn't even exist, and we all know why.

Diaz was not *****. You're using revisionist history. When Marquez fought Diaz the first time, it was a really big and relevant fight. It was numbers 1 and 2 at LW. And like Kev said previously, Katsidis was actually on a roll when he fought Marquez having beaten Escebedo and Kevin Mitchell.
I'm not saying that Katsidis was an all world win, but it was a solid one. Diaz 1 was one of Marquez's best wins. The second Diaz fight was kind of weak, I agree, but still.....if that's the closest thing he had to a tuneup over a 3 year span that's a damn good run.

Juan Diaz is sh1t, lets be real. He'd already been exposed by Nate Campbell. And Katsidis had already been beaten by Diaz! The Diaz rematch was a joke too.
Im not saying he's the tune-up king but hes fought two complete bums either side of Pacquiao. Most top fighters would get criticised for it.

You must be kidding. Obviously everyone wants to fight Floyd and Pacquiao, but from Pacquiao 2 to Katsidis, Marquez didn't take one tuneup and fought really legit competition.
Juan Diaz at the time was a really legit fight, it was not merely an "ok" fight. Katsidis was an OK fight but was far from a tuneup. That's one impressive streak of opponents with no tuneup. Now he fights a tuneup before Pac and a tune up before Rios(likely) and people are calling him a tune up king? It's a joke.

Marquez counter puncher style relies heavily on timing. He is the type of fighter that has to keep busy to keep sharp. It can be worst, he could not be fighting at all.
He is a guy that don't need a massive purse in this stage of his career to fight.
That says a lot about this fighter
There's more to it than that. For the Casamayor fight, Marquez was coming up from 130 and Casamayor was The Ring LW champion, who has never been knocked out. Marquez knocked him out to become the LW Ring champion. Then Juan Diaz was The Ring #1 ranked LW, who has also never been knocked out, Marquez knocks him out too in a FOTY. Floyd Mayweather is Floyd Mayweather, not much to really say about that. The Diaz rematch IMO was pointless, just a soft touch for Marquez, Diaz was coming two consecutive poor performances against Paulie Malignaggi. Katsidis was a tough win, Marquez is a counterpuncher who can get hit. Katsidis put him on his ass. Katsidis was no slouch at the time, he was just coming off probably the biggest win of his career, a TKO against undefeated Kevin Mitchell, and before that fight Katsidis had beaten the very tough Vicente Escobedo and a past prime Jesus Chavez. So he was on a little role, and Marquez knocked him out. And finally Pacquiao #1 WW and "#1 P4P", a fight which I thought Marquez had won but got robbed.
Likar Ramos and Fedchenko are soft touches, but the guy is 38 years old and had some very tough fights from 2007 to present.

he won 8-9 rounds against Pacquiao, practically a JMM highligh reel for 12 rounds., if he would've gotten the decision, then all this wouldn't need to happen.
