I saw this fight knowing that Morales is on his way out and knowing nothing about García because I had never seen him before. The consensus was that García would be too fast and mobile for an aging Morales and that would lead to a lopsided win for the younger fighter.
After watching the fight, I was not too impressed but I give credit to García. He did not look like a special fighter but he did what he had to do. I think he could have done more but he knew that a legend like Morales could always have another proverbial "last hurrah", so he gave him respect and fought a disciplined fight for the cards. His approach seemed to be winning the fight round by round without getting in the line of fire, unnecessarily, against a proven battle-tested veteran like Erik Morales. I also think García showed poise throughout the fight as he never bum-rushed Morales in an amateurish way. Let's face it, Morales has been labeled as "shot" since he lost the rubber match to Barrera, yet he still managed to get provide some exciting battles after that, including the Maidana fight, which he could have won.
García is getting a bit of backlash due to the fact that he faced a worn Morales on his way out and that's what happens when you face a beloved and respected champion like Erik was. It's not much different that when Morales won his first title in 1997, at age 21, against a 39 year old Zaragoza.
By the way, this post has nothing to do with the fact that I am from Puerto Rico and García is of PR descent. Erik Morales is one of my favorite boxers ever and I thought he might have been able to pull this fight off. If there's any doubt, and anyone cares to read it, here's a repost of a tribute I did for Morales a few years back.

I don't mind if he retires on this fight. I think it was a decent showing, but I just think he could have a last hurrah. Maybe I'm giving too much credit though. After all, it's Erik Morales. I wish him the best whatever he does.
I agree with wishing him the best, the mans had a great career..
Nah Morales needs to hang umm up,he finished his last fight on his feet, and gave a hell of a performance..IMO great way to go out...

+1, Erik performed really well against Cano. A well conditioned Morales could still have a few good fights in him. Some are writing him off because of the weight trouble he had this time. I think he could still have one or two good fights before retirement.

actually, it is
Zaragoza was past prime but not shot like Morales is. He was still a very good bantamweight champion even for a 39 year old man.
LOL, Morales did not have trouble with Cano.
As for Garcia, he had surgery and how the hell are you suppose to get in shape after surgery?

Morales would have beat Garcia had he not been so old and past it...Not to mention he was winning up until he was KD late in the fight on my scorecard..Garcia is a decent fighter but not to hot imo,he loses to Maidana Matt's Peterson and Khan..And maybe even Judah...
no he wouldn't..... he had trouble with Cano and Garcia
Marquez would stop him

Morales was fat and old, and still gave Garcia problems. I give Garcia zero credit for this win, and I dont see him as being anything special. Once he faces an elite, he'll be defeated.
On a sidenote, I think it would still be interesting to see Morales vs. Marquez. I think Erik would rise to the occasion.
he wouldnt rise to sh1t .he'd be limp and unable to perform

Maybe so, but I am referring to this fight. I think the kid did what he had to do. Time will tell but he needs to improve in order to have continuing success.
